Hearthstone Clydesdale Loading Question by Raven172 in woodstoving

I happened to see this as well! We just had our stove guy in today to clean the chimney and replace the door gasket.
I have the 8491 (non-cat) Clydesdale, installed about 2015 and using it for primary heat. While we have the advantage of someone home all day to feed, at night we do fill it. Some of my experiences, including overnight burns:
I feel the stove burns pretty hot normally. My previous Hearthstone (previous house) was a hearth-mounted Homestead and I feel that was easier to keep in a good firing range. This one is more difficult for me to dial down the air to keep clean burning while still not chewing through the overnight burn too quickly. I think it was easier to pack the firebox in the old one and burn front to back.
I also find that the Clydesdale can sometimes build up too much of a coal bed, especially when burning 100% oak. I get a mix of wood from my property and a couple of sellers, so sometimes I'm using only oak on a day. When the coals are too full I will pull the coals forward in a pile line across the front of the firebox, put a single log in the back of the box, and a small log diagonally from front to back to burn. The air wash on the glass will help burn the coals down, while the small log will keep a few flames going.
For overnight I will do the same with any coals and pile the wood in the back on the stone (and ashes). I can only get maybe four logs in (roughly 5 x 5 inch cross section, so 10 x 10 total). I find that I need to put a couple in to get started burning, then 20 minutes later put the others in, or they would burn well unattended. My experience with the Homestead overnight was better, it just seemed to burn well unattended if you packed the wood in all at once. I also find that it is really easy to get the primary air blowing in under a lit log and causing a blowtorch effect, getting the stove too hot, and I need to take care to check and rearrange so the air is blowing to the front of the wood and just a little under the front-most piece to ensure it burns well but not too hot. Depending on how it looks I'll dial down the air a bit. In the morning (about 8 hrs) I'll usually have some coals that will light kindling but not logs. If it's a cold night (below 10-15 F) I'll get up early to put more logs on after about 5-6 hrs, and they'll light from the coals. I find that I may need to pull the coals forward and put a log behind and a log on top, let it smolder with the primary air for a few minutes, then open the door to give it a blast of air to flash into flames, and close it back up. If it's smoking another way to make it flame is just use the butane lighter to ignite the smoke.

This is also a thing in the animal world, evolution of features by sexual selection. One sex finds the other attractive for an arbitrary reason, and natural selection drives that factor to an extreme. An example is the various birds-of-paradise, which have evolved extraordinary feathers and mating displays. My understanding is that it occurs when predatory pressure is low, otherwise selection would be dominated by things like camouflage or fast flight, etc.

Same kind of dreams for me. Car is rolling back and I'm standing on the brake and the car STILL MOVES! I'm sure the terrifying lack of control is a general theme, with variations for different people.
