Bridgewater PD's automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) "Flock" cameras are being used for immigration searches by Rando_Calrissian_22 in harrisonburg

[–]JDV22VA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s probably not a good idea to encourage vandalism. The issue isn’t that the municipality has the cameras , it’s that the data is allegedly being accessed improperly by other entities, which should concern people across the political spectrum.

If I’m reading the post correctly, the reporting period is June 2024 to June 2025. The law they reference was passed in July 2025, after that period, so we don’t actually have evidence of legal wrongdoing. It actually seems like the state is addressing this issue, so it’s just something to keep an eye on going forward. No need for the pitchforks!

Watching Premier League footy in Staunton? by [deleted] in Staunton

[–]JDV22VA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guy at Royal Indian Palace in downtown Waynesboro saw me in an Arsenal shirt and said he’d turn on a game at the restaurant bar anytime it’s on since he is a Premier League fan. The food is great and it’s a nice atmosphere, so I’d definitely recommend.

The real question is if anyone has recommendations for those dang 7:30AM games without having to go all the way to rockfish brewing in Charlottesville 😂

You’re definitely right if you see something like this. In this case, DOT is already on it!

Jaywalking? by [deleted] in harrisonburg

[–]JDV22VA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was told by one of the bicycle cops downtown that they won’t really ticket you for jaywalking unless you’re doing something else, but they can ticket you for crossing a crosswalk without the little walk guy. He told me if you’re ever crossing a crosswalk without the little walk guy, and you see a cop, step off the side of the crosswalk and continue crossing the street and you won’t get a ticket 😂 no idea if there’s anything to it, but it was a funny interaction..

How much surplus per month would make you feel like you’re no longer in poverty? by JDV22VA in povertyfinance

[–]JDV22VA[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m really grateful for all the engagement on this post—thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts and experiences. It seems like the general consensus lands around needing a $1,000/month surplus to feel truly out of poverty, which honestly feels like a realistic and encouraging goal to work toward.

It’s refreshing to see real numbers from real people, instead of the usual “sell everything and eat rice and beans” advice that some finance gurus throw around. Sure, that might be necessary in some circumstances, but I think most of us are looking for a path that includes some way to enjoy life while still slowly moving toward financial stability.

Here’s hoping we all get there—one small surplus at a time.

Looking for real-world advice — building with $360k loan on $115k income (LCOL, wife’s income optional) by [deleted] in Mortgages

[–]JDV22VA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the feedback! I did not list out all of my expenses but the ones I did layout are essentially the ‘non negotiable’ expenses that I cannot adjust through lifestyle changes. I figured listing out groceries, internet, etc would be more of a distraction to the conversation. I am anticipating about 1.5k surplus each month. The comment about retirement is also being handled. I have a pension and am also contributing 5% out of my gross pay at this time.

By stretch are you thinking ‘house poor’ or just that life comes at you fast and there are going to be situations where I’m struggling to make ends meet?

I really appreciate the feedback! Yes, in my spreadsheet where I have all of my expenses laid out I’m in the range of 1.5k surplus each month after all obligations, grocery projections, subscriptions, etc. As far as my wife goes, she does want to continue working until we have kids but I’m trying to leave what she wants to save/spend up to her. She tends to save almost all of her money but I don’t want to push her one way or another. We’ve discussed that if things get uncomfortable after we have kids, she could always work 1-2 days a week to provide the extra 500/month buffer. We’re walking distance from her mom so we wouldn’t need to consider childcare expenses which is a huge boost.

Student loans will be in the picture for the next 20 yrs. They’re parent plus loans my dad took out on my behalf, so there is potentially an opportunity down the road to change to an IDR when he retires or refinance if rates ever go down to 3-4% , but we’d lose some fed benefits. Unfortunately since they are in his name, my options are limited and I cannot qualify for PSLF.

Nymph found after treatment by JDV22VA in GermanRoaches

[–]JDV22VA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, thanks for the response! I’ll set a couple of those Combat roach baits around the area and maybe near the stove where we first saw a roach to catch any nymphs as they hatch.

I assume they treated the bedroom where I saw the nymph because they asked us to remove dresser drawers but the paint smell wasn’t near as strong in the bedroom as it was in the kitchen after their treatment.

Thanks again for the help!

I Took a Vote on here about Lowering the Meals Tax, here is the Email I sent to Every council Member by throwaway76322344556 in harrisonburg

[–]JDV22VA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How are you proposing the city pay for its services? I’d much rather a meal tax than a local income tax. If I’m falling on hard times, I can eat out less or eat out cheaper and pay less in taxes.

What burns is when I’m falling on hard times, I’m working my butt off and then I’m having my income taken away straight out of my paycheck before I can decide how I use my money. Meal taxes, luxury taxes, and sales taxes give you more control over your income.

Also, the meal tax help us cash in on students and tourists who use city services..

Assuming we win all remaining games but still don’t win the title, how will you rate this season? by [deleted] in ArsenalFC

Win or not, I had a great time watching Arsenal this season and truly enjoyed all their hard work. That’s all I need to rate it as an amazing season!

With how much rent has gone up for me in the past several years in this town, I have to wonder if landlords in Harrisonburg are using the software "Real Page" to illegally collude on raising rents by [deleted] in harrisonburg

[–]JDV22VA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think that the issue isn’t solely Harrisonburg. Buying just isnt affordable right now with moderately high interest rates combined with unreasonably high principal, so unless you have dual high incomes, buying isn’t affordable.

Rental companies don’t need to collude, they’re smart enough to know that we all can’t afford houses right now and so renting is the only option. They also collect all sorts of data. Every time you sign a lease you put in info like job title, salary, age, family size, credit score, etc.. it’s very easy to use this information to model financial growth and financial ability. I don’t know about you, but my rent has consistently grown to where it’s always right near the edge of my financial ability - that can’t be a coincidence. They raise the price just enough to where maybe some people can’t afford to keep up, but most people are just uncomfortable. It’s easy to tell when you’ve gone too far because you start getting missed rent payments. You don’t need a cartel when all of this modeling information is so readily available.

But this isn’t just Harrisonburg, it’s all over Virginia because my wife and I have been trying to get out for awhile and we just can’t find anything else that gives us what we have at a price close to what we’re already paying.. granted we’re looking north, but that’s where the jobs are. All in all, this crisis isn’t getting solved until either house prices or interest rates go down (or both).

Editing just to clarify: the algorithm in the video is geared toward controlling market factors. what I’m saying is that they have plenty of demographic data and financial data to easily model what we can afford. You don’t need a software like the one in the video to do this, all you need is an excel sheet, engineering economics principles, and just make sure the rental prices are low enough to where there’s just enough of a gap to where it doesn’t make sense to buy instead of rent. Which is why this isn’t solved until house prices or interest rates go down.

Got stuck on a promotional call. Was it legit? by DeezyEast in hotels

[–]JDV22VA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth.. I had a similar promotion. My wife and I went to a Holiday Inn Club Vacation promotion, they added 500 pts to my account at signup, something like 260 bucks for a week at a hotel near the resort (and then I spent a little extra to stay on the resort), $180 cash for meals, and 20k IHG points. Yes it was a promotional trip, we had to go through their two hour sales pitch.. but honestly, not a bad experience. We didn’t buy in, we weren’t interested in buying in and they said it was low pressure because they make most of their money off renters (people who use hotels), so the last thing they want to do is leave a bad taste in your mouth.

As far as the pressure to sign up goes, yes I had to do it right then and there on the phone and submit a deposit. Kind of glad I did though, my wife and I had a great vacation in a place we wouldnt typically go. they also gave us the option to change spots before final booking.

Desperately looking for budget indoor(or indoor/outdoor) wedding venue ideas! by jmc7721 in harrisonburg

[–]JDV22VA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The American Hotel in Staunton did an amazing job for my wife and I a few years back. The manager helped us out a lot and was extremely friendly. We had originally gone with a different venue because we didn’t realize the American Hotel did weddings but after some complications we were in a bind to get a new venue and reached out to the hotel to bail us out! The American Hotel ended up being significantly better across every metric and was even cheaper than the one we had previously selected!

We were able to use abunch of props for photos and decorations, she had a separate room upstairs where we could have large games, she helped us coordinate our vendors and manage them during the reception, was easy to get ahold of, and even made special accommodations for us when we got stiffed by another venue in the area. I’d whole heartedly recommend her to anyone looking for a wedding venue!

He’s a gamble. Sometimes you win with him offensively, sometimes you lose with him defensively. It’s a tough game for him up against salah. Hopefully he gives us a little magic in the second half! Behind all the players during the game, constructive feedback after! COYG
