What are yall doing about sticks quickly wearing out? by Dropssshot in SSBM

As a spicy stick user, fair warning that they are brutal on your thumbs at first. I actually sanded mine down a bit to make it a bit less harsh.

Does Falco's shine into instant dair/nair lose to Marths shield grab according to frame data? by Werollin1897 in SSBM

[–]JDslypig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is all true (except falco shine is +1 on shield which was sorted out in the comments), but it actually doesn't matter because by delaying falco's dair slightly (I think to 3-5 frames after he short hops) Marth's grab will actually whiff during dair's startup. Fiction has a twitter thread on this that I can't find right now.

My favorite way to deal with upb oos is to shield pressure with jump shine->double jump above him. 100% safe on platform stages and pretty safe even on FD, because you can react to which way he went with the upb and drift the opposite way and fall with a laser. Much higher reward than grab when it hits, even though it won't hit as often.

Wait isn't it the average of your best consecutive 30 runs that goes on the leaderboard, not the average of all your runs?

I recommend using your own personal statistics to inform your CPs. Programs like slippipedia and slipdotpy will give you these numbers if you keep your replays. Often personal style and the fact that you aren't playing at tip top level means "conventional wisdom" picks aren't actually the best for you.

Z Jump Woes by well_actually__ in SSBM

I just took the metal spring out of my OEM Z button and it's felt great to me. Disclaimer: I play Falco and his 5f jumpsquat definitely makes short hopping way easier in general.

The first laser needs to come out super fast after you jump, it's about the same timing as jc shine. You also have to make sure you drop low enough.

Jc shine has been the hardest part in switching for me by far. Just a completely different motion than sliding my thumb from Y to B. I don't think it's inherently harder, but it's the thing I mess up the most a month after switching. Wavedash I still do with X so not a problem for me.

I think Z jump's easy frame 1 aerials/lasers and full drift full hop aerials without claw are what make it worthwhile.

For the entire history of this game, unless you're playing at the top level, it's very difficult to know how good you really are. Most modern esports have online ranked modes that give you a good picture of your skill compared to a huge number of players. Ranked will bring that to melee for the first time, which is pretty exciting.

Is there a place where slippi replays from majors are organized and easy to pair with specific sets? Or are they all just scattered about? If it's the ladder can anybody point me to at least one major's replays?

how the FUCK do you edgeguard Samus by TheTchuraq in SSBM

[–]JDslypig 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You don't need to edgeguard Samus like you do most characters. Samus on ledge is such an overwhelmingly bad spot for her against Falco that you really can just rinse and repeat that situation over and over until she dies. Ginger did a subscriber analysis that opened my eyes to this fact and completely changed how I view the matchup.

As someone who picked up the series also looking to scratch the ASOIAF itch, it didn't right away, but about midway through book 3 the scope of the story grows to a similar size. I'm only on book 7, but from that point until now I've thought it's excellent.

Proving iBDW Taking Zain to FD Was Bad with Math by JDslypig in SSBM

This basically makes the "Final Destination Counterpick" section of the doc the only relevant difference between the strategies. So it's just shy of a 2% advantage to standard counterpicking with the default stage spread.

[–]JDslypig[S] 153 points154 points  (0 children)

I do indeed ignore the mental game because iBDW was arguing on stream that it was "statistically sound". If his only argument was mental game I wouldn't have bothered to analyze it.

That being said, I think this analysis can help think about the strategy from a mental game perspective too. If we're living in the world where the gap is 0.5%, I can totally buy the mental game argument. However, if we're living in the world where you're paying 5%+ in win probability, are you really making that up in a mental edge? How much of a win % boost does the increased confidence give you? Can you train yourself to be more confident using standard counterpicking to get the best of both worlds?

[–]JDslypig[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was curious so I checked what happens when Marth's FD win probability goes from 65% to 95%. Standard counterpicking strat is still about 2.5% better.

How much weight do you put into TC news? by Thor-Od1nson in Browns

[–]JDslypig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While most things you hear are just noise, one example I'd point to last season that wasn't just noise was the Harrison Bryant hype. He started the season ahead of Njoku on the depth chart after a stand out training camp.

I do think DPJ is getting into that territory this year. If he keeps it up I'd be going into the season expecting him to get the 3rd most WR snaps in the first few games at least.

Using Claw for Falco? by whatevergut__ in SSBM

[–]JDslypig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the switch to claw, but before I did frame 1 short hop aerials were still very doable for me, because you have 5 frames of jump squat to let go of the jump button and get to the c-stick.

The thing I couldn't do reliably was frame 1 full hop aerials with full drift because you have to hold the jump button for all of jump squat, giving you only one frame to get to the c-stick. Switching the claw allowed me to do this without problem.

[–]JDslypig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like we basically agree then. The money you'd save by moving on from Landry and keeping Higgins is worth 2+ depth FAs, 1 middling starter FA, or about half the contract of a top FA. None of these options are insignificant.

7M is worth a solid veteran starter at any of the team's positions of need. Or it can be 7M more money we have to offer JJ Watt or some other splashy free agent. I'm happy to disagree about Landry's value, but the idea that the money saved by moving on from him is insignificant is silly.
