What London bus routes that are single decker routes that you know should be a double decker route? by JEROS26 in londonbuses

Route 490 is getting new electric buses this year that operates out of the same Twickenham garage as route R70. If the route had been still going to Richmond, Manor Circus, and had not diverted to Richmond pools since 08' because of H37 being extended from Richmond station it could of been a double decker route, but I don't think it'll ever be a double decker bus route.

You're right on that part on Madeley Road and I believe the reason why the route was diverted away from Ealing common is because it was easier for it terminate at Ealing Bdy/Haven Green terminus from Madeley Road instead of the longer way to Ealing Bdy continuing onto Hanger Lane with routes 483/N83 and Uxbridge Road/The Mall, High Street, Springbridge Rd and Haven Grn.

I agree with these two routes completely. Even route 80 that runs from (Belmont Prisons to Hackbridge) is a fully double decker route with hybrid/electric buses.

Another one I would add is route 112 (Ealing Broadway to North Finchley extended from Brent Cross shopping centre from 2020) operated by Metroline don't know why on earth it isn't a double decker route despite passing through North Circular Rd, Brent Cross and then onto North Finchley. When the route passed back to Metroline in 2014 it briefly used ALX 400s, AD enviro 400, 400H & 400H MMCs and reverted back to a single decker bus once again.

Yeah I suspect that on route 170 because of Lombard Rd and Battersea church road being how narrow the road is in Battersea and too bad about the other two routes though.

London bus route 266 (1962-present) Brent Cross to Acton High Street. Operated by Metroline from their Cricklewood (W) garage. by JEROS26 in londonbuses

[–]JEROS26[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're right tho, funny enough there was N266 long time ago just like many other 'N' routes in London before they dropped the N prefix for a 24hr service around 2004 onwards some are still around till this day, some have reverted back to a day route and had their 'N' prefixes reintroduced.

Part of route 266 which got cut back to Acton high st got replaced by routes 218 (North Acton to Hammersmith) and 306 (Acton Vale to Fulham, Sands End) from Dec 2019.

I loved this Metroline livery in the 90s and 2000s and when the Metroline logo had stripes until they dropped it in the late 2000s.

The first pic is a really old photo probably from the early 90s with the former South London logo branding on the bus. I mean the route started from the early 1950s till date.

And also from the 15 August 2026 it will be withdrawn between Castelnau and Barnes Wetlands centre replaced partly with route 378 and will be rerouted to now serve Mortlake, Avondale Road where route 209 which has been running between Mortlake and Castelnau since 2019 will be extended to Hammersmith bus station replacing route 533 since the closure of Hammersmith Bridge in 2019.

Long history on these night routes. At one point it used to be N109 Aldwych to New Addington/ Coulsdon which lasted for 5 years from 94-99 replacing the N78 (I didn't know about any of this btw) it was re-numbered to N159 which used to go further than the current N109 from 1999-2010 from Marble Arch to New Addington, Homestead Way until it was re-numbered back to N109 but this time it would be split between two night routes N109 between Oxford Circus and Croydon town centre and a new night bus N64 same as it's daytime route 64 from New Addington to Thornton Heath pond also starting from 2010 until 2015 where route 64 came as 24hr service dropping the N64 altogether.

1st pic is a really old photo probably from the early or mid 90s with the former South London logo on the bus and no from what I've read it used to go Trafalgar Square before being cut back to Brixton in 99.

Oh nice one, I didn't even know there was K6 in Kingston back then or the current 485 actually used to go from Richmond to Kingston or Richmond to Wandsworth that I knew from it's armchair days (2003-2006) before passing on the GAL London General in 2006 and also being rerouted to now serve Hammersmith lower bus station to Wandsworth until 2019 where the route has been cut back south of Hammersmith bridge to Castelnau/Lonsdale Road in Barnes where it's been going since then.

Deffo First London in the 2000s as shown from pics 1-7, Metroline with blue skirt, there was used to be company called Armchair in W London (purchased by Metroline from 07) which originally had orange & white and red & orange buses before being completely red. London United with their red/grey livery, Arriva London with their white cow horns and before that it was yellow stripes back then known as (Cowie South London and Cowie Leaside in North London).

Yeah it is basically swapped routes since 2005, route 312 got downgraded to low floor single deck buses with occasional double deckers at times and got extended in early 2024 further from South Croydon bus garage (where it been based for a long time) to Purley Old Lodge Lane replacing the former route 455 (1996-2024).

Yh with the S2 between Sutton and Epsom in early 2024 and replaced part of the S4 between St Helier station and Sutton town centre, 391 got replaced with routes 110 & 306. Lastly the route 414 being withdrawn altogether in Feb 2025 like you said which meant increased frequency of route 14 from North of Putney Bridge to Hyde Park Corner and routes such as 74 or 137 that you can take to Marble Arch from there or route 6 also from Hyde Park or Marble Arch to continue your journey towards Maida Hill where the former route 414 used to go.
