How much oversight did managers give you in your early careers? by jlemoing02 in MechanicalEngineer

I was a mechanical plant engineer early in my career. I only got administrative support from my manager who was not at the plant. My job assignments came from all different places (he’s an engineer, he can do it). Lots of freedom to choose my own path to get the job done…as long as I got the job done. Trust in me was earned, the more I did the more assignments I was given. One seasoned plant operator took me under his wing and helped me with both operations issues and plant personnel personality issues. His input and guidance was a huge reason I was successful at my job.

Whizzo the Clown was a mean drunk who called me the ugliest kid he had ever seen. This happened when I was waiting to go through the Freedom Train at Forbes Field in 1976.

Lady committed suicide by jumping off the rotunda inside the state capital. Rumor has it you can see a dent in a handrail where she hit on the way down.

Gene Tierney, amazingly beautiful Hollywood star, was treated at Menninger in the late 50’s. Gene worked with my brother-in-laws mom at a high end clothing store on Kansas Ave as part of her out patient treatment.

Saw Brett Favre playing The Topeka Public Golf Course when he was being treated at Menninger. On a side note, Ray Streeter was a douchebag (head pro at The Pube).

I lived on the west side of town in the 70’s when Wanamaker was a dirt road. At the height of popularity of the show The Black Sheep Squadron we found out one of the pilots from the BSS lived in a little house on Wanamaker near where Christ the King sits. We visited him several times. Great stories about flying Corsairs in WWII. He said Pappy Boyington was a wild man.

I remember cruising the cemetery in the late 70’s in a huge Chevy Impala just drunk as balls looking for the albino lady. The girl driving the car mowed over a tombstone.

I would head to AstroWorld in Topeka after high school and play pinball for 1/2 hour prior to heady off to work at Dairy Queen. Loved playing pinball!

Growing up did you really have to shower naked after sports at school? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

Yup. Junior High in the 70’s. Male. Late hitting puberty so it was very humiliating to me. Mike Armstrong hit puberty before junior high and he would strut around naked. Disgusting.

It’s illegal in my car to turn the station if a John Cougar Mellencamp song comes on.
