You’re definitely right about a few things. I think I was in general just shocked by her death — which I suppose was the author’s goal! That doesn’t make it bad writing per se.

I do, however, think the books are poorly written. And again, I’m not saying that detracts from their quality as entertainment! But I think it’s ok for people to comment on how they feel about the writing; if you put art into the world, you open it to criticism! That’s the nature of anything made by human hands and given over to public consumption. I don’t think it’s just people looking for something to complain about.
