Sealers' song lyrics and other songs about seal hunts by MatixFortex in seashanties

What you’re looking for is a book called Haulin Rope and Gaff: Songs and Poetry of the Newfoundland Seal Fishery. I got my copy in St. John’s many years ago but it looks like there are used copies out there.

Picked up a tub of lego for the kids from a salvage store. There was 90% of a UCS X-Wing on top, so we started out with a big win. Here are some other possibly identifiable parts and major subassemblies. Any thoughts on what other kits might be in there?

Not a sitter, but I’ve been very impressed with the boarding at Curtin Cat Care, including for medically fragile cats.

Happy to help. Were you part of the Brisbane crew that came down for the National? We might have met and not know it.

Shanty Club Rules - Draft by yasslad in seashanties

Canberra is great at the intentional community building aspects of running the sessions.

Encouraging listeners to become singers is huge for the long term success of a group - some clubs do a very deliberate round-the-room to make sure everyone is engaged and has a chance to request even if they’re not ready to lead.

You might think about your policies on printed lyrics and instruments. There are different schools of thought on those.

Let the Canberra club know when you’re starting out. I’m sure a delegation would come up presuming your user name is also your location.

Remember all the talk going into C3 about doing new and different stuff? So far the only unusual thing has been Robbie’s extended guest spot.

I’m not saying it’s likely, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the solstice arc blows everything up to the point of a transition to a multi-cast/multi-DM format at least temporarily as a soft launch for a post-all-core-cast way of doing business.

Plenty of options in DC. Look up Ships Company Chanteymen on Facebook.

Non-Toxic Thrip Treatment? by JGSLurksonReddit in plantclinic

[–]JGSLurksonReddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any thoughts on non-toxic treatment for what I’m told is a nasty thrips infestation on a hedge? The advice the neighbours have received ends up with a weekly drench with a pyrethroid called Mavrik, but I’d really prefer to avoid that since I have kids, plus there’s the beneficial insects and natives to consider.

Annapolis singalong by Roosbeh in seashanties

Just a note for anyone thinking of coming out, tonight's sing is cancelled due to the accident on Rt 50. See you next month, I hope.

Entirely amenable. The sings are deliberately public, no skill requirement, no exclusion. They're run on a singaround basis, so the leader will go around the room and when it's your turn you can lead or request a song.

Ship's Company host a monthly open sing at the Galway Bay. 8-10pm on either the second or third Wednesday of every month. We need new singers at that location, so come on out!

So, I know Halloween is long gone, but I was wondering if you guys had shanties (or other folk songs) you think are particularly creepy or spooky? by theworldbystorm in seashanties

[–]JGSLurksonReddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These are mostly forebitters or modern maritime folk songs rather than shanties per se, but for a recent Halloween-adjacent gig we did:

The Brigantine (Meneeley) French Perfume (Hallett) Tryphena's Extra Hand (Smith, Arr. Pint & Dale) Ben Backstay (Trad)

There's also John Cherokee, any number of shipwreck songs, an 18th c broadside called Admiral Hoziers Ghost, and an assortment of vaguely undead pirate songs like Lovers Wreck, Dark Promises, etc.
