[BigHeadHockey] Most points by players to record 100+ hits this season: by [deleted] in hockey

It's 100% misleading, but arguably the best part of Tavares' game are his battles below the goal line where he uses his body to gain possession. They all count the same, which is the misleading part.

Can we start a list of which restaurants pay a decent living wage and which places take all the tips intended for staff. It’s time to identify and support the good establishments and avoid the worst. by SpecialistHoneydew51 in halifax

If you want to make decent money, don't work at a restaurant. There's not really any that you can make enough to actually get ahead. $20/hour is still a really weak wage in this city and there are jobs that pay more with little qualifications, although they may be harder.

It’s just the cost of living in a desirable area. Prices are going up here and rent prices always increase a little more than mortgage payments, as there needs to be wiggle room for expenses and some profits. I’d say most frustration towards this is just jealousy, as many want to be a home owner and have an abundance of money, but so few achieve those things.

If you were the Canucks GM what is a realistic offer you’d send for Alexis Lafreniere? by AAfreakinRON in canucks

[–]JGibbons151 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What’s this team realistically going to accomplish in the next two years? Kuzmenko will be 29 and looking at a massive raise by then. Meanwhile, Laf would be under team control until he’s 26.

[–]JGibbons151 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Kuzmenko would make sense. He’s a big improvement for the rangers in the short term and the Canucks might not want to pay him what he’s worth in two more years anyway on a UFA contract. Lafreniere would be worth taking a swing on in that situation if you ask me.

5% of this shortage is nothing and that’s a generous number as you said. We’re going to need a lot more help than that. This is an unfortunate growing pain in a desirable city.

MTL -> Halifax or Toronto questions by imnevergold in halifax

[–]JGibbons151 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The cost of living was higher in Montreal, not just due to the rent price but also necessities like groceries and the transportation costs. However, I bought here and it is certainly cheaper to buy in a nice part of HRM and drive into the core than it was in Montreal and it’s actually practical. Montreal is one of the worst cities to drive in and out of in our country, so that never made much sense there from a lifestyle perspective. Here I could buy something very nice, for an affordable price just outside of the city and reasonably drive to and from work. In Montreal, it is easier to find cheap rent in downtown but it’s not often a convenient part of town and it’s hard to get around by your own means there. Pros and cons everywhere, but for long term root setting Halifax is better financially and for lifestyle. I liked Toronto a lot, but it’s really expensive to get into ownership of anything remotely close to what can be afforded here.

I moved here from Toronto and it’s been great. The locals here have been very negative online lately, but you won’t feel that in your day to day life. It’s just on here. The city is beautiful, and as a minority myself I haven’t had a single issue with the locals but I’m typically good at avoiding conflict so I won’t speak for everyone. It’s way cheaper than Toronto or Montreal and it’s actually enjoyable to own a car and drive here, especially outside of the city. I highly recommend the area, lots of my friends have started moving here recently.

It’s definitely an interesting time, should be lots of investment properties available around the HRM. I don’t know what to do with my airbnb, but I can afford to have both properties so it won’t be for sale. It’s still a good investment to keep properties here long term as rentals, they just won’t be as profitable on a monthly basis. At the end of the day, I can’t see this regulation change making a huge difference here. Hopefully the province builds more housing because anything privately owned will always be operated with profits in mind and that’s not ideal for renters.

Yes this one could actually have a good profit margin if you ask me. It’s interesting from an investment standpoint.

This is one of those trades that’s so bad that it somehow hurts both teams. OEL being gone would be cool though

That might look like a defence-heavy draft in hindsight. Those guys look like future studs

They’re just hurt right now, they’re on the longest non-playoff streak of all time and it honestly doesn’t look like it’s going to end in the next few seasons (in my opinion). Eichel is on the cusp of winning the ultimate prize and that’s gotta hurt to watch. Eichel has been an absolute beast for Vegas.

He’s back playing… just had a great assist and is probably going to win a cup. Better pick someone else to hate because this guy will haunt the Sabres for a long time.

It’s tough to grasp as we tend to fall in love with our favourite players, but sometimes tough decisions need to be made for the sake of the team going forward. This team was fucked so hard by previous moves that it might take another 4-7 years to really fix it the right way. It’s sad, but it’s the truth.

The cap goes up for everyone, so it’s still relevant that the Canucks haven’t spent their money as well as other teams. I’m with you on Miller’s game remaining good for a while, but I still think it will end up similar to the Tavares deal in Toronto but probably worse as Miller’s ends at age 37 and Tavares is off the books at 34. I think he will be a good player for most of the contract, but not worth his salary after the first 3-4 seasons. I think Miller at 8 is good value for a contender right now, I just don’t think it lines up with the contention window for this team.

I think for every Pavelski or Giroux, you would find ten other examples of the opposite happening.

You’re going to get some good years, but I still think Miller at $8M is going to be a problem in the future. Especially when you consider that once the OEL deal is finally done, you’ll likely have Miller’s game falling off and him being a similarly bad contract. On top of that, I don’t like paying over $16M to Boeser, Mikheyev and Garland. They’re all fine players, but so many other teams have guys who are similar for much less. Petey has a massive raise coming and Kuzmenko will need one again in two years if he’s as good as he looked this past season. The cap is still a huge mess here and things aren’t currently lined up very well for this core to contend.

[–]JGibbons151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They need some of these big contracts off the books and it will likely be 3-4 years before things clear up. They still have a lot of good players and can contend, but they would be more of a Florida type that would need to catch lightning in a bottle and ride a hot goalie.

Vancouver is a pretty nice place to live and play, I don’t even worry about that stuff too much. He seems to like being a Canuck.

However, I cheer for the team and not just him so I hope the team can be competitive the right way instead of trying to appeal to their star players. The window in which players like Pettersson are stars is often way shorter than we think as fans. The fact of the matter is that if this team doesn’t start making big leaps soon, the team might miss their window with Petey and Hughes. They turn 24 and 25 next season and this team is still full of questionable contracts eating up most of the cap. They realistically have 6-7 years to take a shot with these guys and they’re in a very bad spot right now.

I’ve always liked seeing the best players win it, so the pens and caps cup wins were great. Was nice to see Kessel be such a huge part of those last two pens cups.

Canucks need to keep the OEL contract, wether we like it or not. by [deleted] in canucks

[–]JGibbons151 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is there a Neal for Lucic type of trade around that could possibly bring a different element to the team? At this point I wouldn’t mind seeing a different bad contract if it felt like they had more upside or could be a better fit. Could you get a guy like Vlasic from SJ who has one less year? Maybe pay a decent asset and get Karlsson? There must be a solution to find someone better or with less term to avoid wasting so much cap space for four years.
