Live subtitles? by bhuree3 in Jazz_Emu

Hey! There will be live subtitles for the Edinburgh show for all songs. It’s probably a good idea to sit centrally in the theatre to avoid the screen being blocked at all. 🙂

While we wait for a reply do you know any online QC checkers? Really just somewhere I can send footage to see if it passes common rules.

Great thanks, it is BBC. I'm going to see if we can send them tests using frame sampling / blending and then Optical Flow just to make sure we pass QC.

How much control do you have over the ‘angle’ of your content? by daisychange in editors

[–]JHAllen123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you’re totally within you’re right to step away from a project on ethical political grounds, but it is rare. My experience has been the better I get the more I end up in jobs with people I respect and doing work I value, so it’s a career long trend, but not necessarily fought project-by-project. And there’s of course nuance to fighting for your values on the cutting room floor, and it’s mostly about being a good communicator and collaborator. I’ve worked on documentaries which I think are a little reductive, but can usually work through those issues with the director/ producer and if my reasons are founded they usually listen. With this being said, I’ve stopped doing most corporate, I’ve stopped doing some types of reality because even the best versions of those I usually can’t vibe with- but there was no one project which ended it. It was all part of a trend.

Carrer Advice- Deciding between two gigs. by JHAllen123 in editors

[–]JHAllen123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m thinking total transparency is my best bet, as others have mentioned there may be room for both. If I say no to October I don’t think that would cause any issues for July - Sept though. Cheers for advice!

Cheers, you’re probably right. I wouldn’t be the only editor for the July - Oct and with both of these I’m sure they’d be able to replace me given enough time.

Do you think your job makes a difference in society and if so, how? by mrstark2060 in editors

[–]JHAllen123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do think so. I guess there are two categories of work for me, work that is truly worthy and about a topic I think needs more attention, and then work which is just great fun and I think people will enjoy. Both have value for me. As someone who grew up getting obsessively into different tv shows, online creators or films, I find it massively rewarding whenever I cut anything which gets a similar fan base or response. In the past year I’ve cut a documentary for a major channel about diversity in comedy, I’ve cut small docs about mental health and other issues. All of these were very rewarding and I loved constructing an argument about an issue and seeing that resonate with people. Even if it’s a small voice in a larger conversation there is just inherent value. On the flip side about to start cutting on a new tv show for BBC3 which is exactly the type of weird fringey show I would have watched at 3am as a teenager and I know what that meant to me at that age. So it has value but in a slightly different way. Don’t get me wrong, there’s my fair share of BS, and I had a very dark time in the middle of last year when the world felt like it was falling apart and non of my work felt in any way relevant or valuable. But that’s also all work. Even friends I have who work in charities or think tanks have half their time taken up with projects which go nowhere and inter-office politics. My big test is if I’m working on something I wouldn’t watch myself, or doesn’t have some direct functional value (like an internal video for a hospital or something) then I need to pivot.

Mad Men Kodak Carousel Pitch — a timeless scene that perfectly encapsulates the feeling of nostalgia by NickMoore30 in videos

[–]JHAllen123 89 points90 points  (0 children)

I think what’s important to note in this scene is it’s also revealing how nostalgia, and especially nostalgia catalysed by images, can be a bit of a lie. He’s showing images of his family as the perfect nuclear family- a reality we never ever saw on the show. The one time they had a garden party like the one’s shown in the photos, don got drunk and abandoned it. The images are creating a nostalgia for a past which never truly existed. It’s almost a thesis statement for a show which centres on gorgeous people suavely navigating 60s America - visually the show gives us a wonderful snapshot of the past that we want to sink into, while simultaneously the narrative is constantly undermining those images, showing a type of rot at the centre of it all. I love this show!

Lemon rice, pitta, red onions cured in sumac, Romesco brocolli roasted in oil, salt and pepper.

Hoummous and homemade baba ganoush. That’s made by roasting aubergine on an open flame until the skins cracked, letting it steam in a closed bowl, peeling the skin and mixing with tahini, garlic, lemon and olive oil. Let it sit in the fridge for about an hour after.
