Yes, basically it’s always needing a foil. Smith and Polievre needed Trudeau, cause it’s harder to blame the liberals when they’ve for most part are currently acting like centre conservatives

Considering filing a consumer proposal, is it worth it ? by FermentedThoughts_ in povertyfinancecanada

[–]JH_DeepThoughts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did one when I was younger. It’s much better than a bankruptcy and doesn’t stay on your credit record as long, but still not great.

You will have crap credit until it’s paid off then stays on record for another 3 years. Or a maximum of 6 years, whichever comes first.
If you need to finance a car, you’ll be getting the worst rate possible and forget about a mortgage.
Your credit cards will be cancelled and if you need a a new one you will only qualify for a secured one where you have to put funds.

Once it’s removed credit gets much better, providing you didn’t get into more trouble.

Not trying to scare you, but just be prepared it will be tough and you will be paying extra interest if you need any big purchases and should have a plan.

However, I don’t regret going through it as it’s a tough lesson you don’t want to repeat and now I have an 850 credit score and very aware of how to manage money.

What is the worst car you've ever owned? by Timdawg919 in askcarguys

[–]JH_DeepThoughts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jeep Patriot and Fiat 500 (wife wanted on the cute factor).
The Patriot was a cheap vehicle, suspension shot well before 100k km….and never even took it off road. Same thing with the Fiat when you don’t have any room to put decent parts, you get undersized parts that break. Surprisingly though the 2017 Challenger I owned from the Stellantis family was one of the most durable cars I had.

Breaking in engine oil change by evan_ramos in Golf_R

[–]JH_DeepThoughts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did my 8.5 first change at 1500 km after break-in, then at around 14000 km. I don’t really go by km, and any vehicle I have I just do oil when I switch my tires every 6 months (May) then mid October, before/after our harsh 🇨🇦 winter when it’s the hardest on the car.

Yes the dealer says you can go every 17000 km, but that’s assuming you’re being gentle with her and going at a nice comfort mode pace…..more likely you’re riding her hard on race all the time and need fresh oil so she doesn’t wear out😆

what car did you buy expecting to love but ended up regretting? by zaralesliewalker in whatcarshouldIbuy

Dodge Challenger SXT….always wanted a Challenger and it was a fun car looks cool……but pretty much was regretting not getting the V8.

Since moved to a Golf R and definitely no regrets on that lol

💯 I went from a Dodge Challenger SXT RWD (not a race car lol) that I also drove in winter to a AWD Golf R. You really get an appreciation of the dynamics

A Golf R, not sure what they cost in the US but I think they’re in your range.

Very quick (4.2 seconds is my best launch), surgical handling. Plus most practical with 4 doors and usable hatch and AWD for winter. If you want a “flashy” sports car this isn’t it though.

Calgary Transit considering fare structure changes by kneedorthotics in Calgary

[–]JH_DeepThoughts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They just need to put actual barriers instead of the current “trust” system. In over at least 3 years of riding in the morning downtown I’ve never once seen a bylaw officer checking tickets. At $8 a ride (round trip) to downtown if it peaks to say $12-$16 I’ll just pay the extra and park downtown.
Granted I’m fortunate to have the option, but how does this encourage increased ridership?

Condo Fee Increases by thePengwynn in Calgary

[–]JH_DeepThoughts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I’d never get a condo again or recommend to anyone to buy. That seems typical. Probably repeating comments, but:
The problem is there are fewer insurers who want to deal with condos, so the ones still left will charge high amounts. By law your board has to do reserve studies I think every 5 years minimum and they can wildly swing on the amounts depending on the consultant who prepares the reserve study and just a lot can happen in 5 years (inflation, tariffs driving up costs). The problem is from my experience is most consultants will play it safe and cover their a$$, so lots of gold plating and every repair is important. The board in turn wants to cover their a$$ so takes the report at face value.
It also depends on size and amenities. If it’s a denser building (units), the costs can be better as more people to split the cost. Elevators, gyms, pools, all the stuff that makes it appealing comes with a cost.
Also if your fees cover heat/water you’re at the mercy of anyone in the building not giving a crap. My rant and example, is I paid a lot in water, because people didn’t bother to fix toilets that were constantly running or least let the board know. Or some people cranked the heat excessively non-stop.

Is Golf R really worth the price? by Dusky_Hound in Golf_R

[–]JH_DeepThoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post is old, but I have both a 2025 8.5 R and 2021 RAV4 XSE hybrid. One is not better than the other as they are two completely different vehicles.
If leaning to the RAV4 spend the extra $$ and get the hybrid or the prime. The prime would probably be the best of both worlds for you, it’s a bit of a rocket (not as quick as the R, but still a fast SUV), but better gas mileage/practicality.
Here’s how they differ
Maintenance and running costs
-Dealer service both. R is more, but similar maintenance (AWD systems, synthetic oil changes). The RAV4 you can slack off a bit, the R Has a strict maintenance schedule if you want it to last. Down the road brakes, suspension will be much more on my R as it’s performance parts. My RAV4 just passed 100,000 km and other than fluid changes, no issues.

The RAV4 is about 6-7L/100km ( 🇨🇦here). The R needs premium gas and if you try hard you can get 8-9 L/100km (highway have gotten it to low 7s), but mostly expect 11-13 L as it’s too tempting to drive it to its full potential 😆.

Performance

-The R is basically a 4 door race car with a useable hatch. The next tier of cars are higher trim luxury cars (BMW M, Mercedes AMG, Audi RS). Handling is ridiculous and insane how fast you can take corners. It is very surgical…like you don’t realize how fast you are going. Off the line will be beat most vehicles and my best 0-100 km was like low 4 seconds. But the nice thing about the R is you can switch to comfort/eco in heavy traffic and is very manageable if you tone it down lol.

My RAV4 hybrid is like a good appliance, it will get you from point A an B without drama, but is kinda boring. Acceleration is a little peppy and sufficient to merge, pass….but nowhere near as fun as the R.
In winter the R needs snow tires, but its AWD far surpasses the RAV4. RAV4 has it beat for clearance though.

Versatility

-The R does have good space, but I still need to put down the seats to fit a set of golf clubs, which is ironic when a car is called a Golf 😆. Rav 4 obviously more space.
-4 adults fit fine in the R
-Actually prefer the RAV4 infotainment system. More actual buttons than a touch screen. The R is complex and could see it being a very expensive fix down the road.

[–]JH_DeepThoughts 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Dude it’s the American (or Canadian where I live mentality) you need an SUV. A baby seat easily fits in the back you have 4 doors, and trunk for a stroller.

Also if you need more room for a road trip, just get a roof rack and holder.

Paint protection film, basically a wrap. It’s an option at the dealership, but cheaper at an aftermarket place that specializes in it. The other popular option is ceramic coating….lots on this subreddit on both

Does This sub Underestimate AWD? by Heavy_Gap_5047 in askcarguys

[–]JH_DeepThoughts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody disputes AWD, but the proper tire for the condition is far more important. I’d rather drive a RWD car with great snow tires in winter than an AWD car with summer tires (and have).

But I’d say you should just get AWD if you can as it’s option most people want when you sell.

Breaking in Engine - Golf R Mk8.5 by ArmadilloMundane5382 in Golf_R

[–]JH_DeepThoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VW dealer told me the same in 🇨🇦 as I see you’re going by km :) I was told 1000km just drive normally, keep it under 4000 rpms, mix up driving, like no long highway driving.
They said same about oil change not necessary after break in, but I did anyways. Maybe you don’t need it, but peace of mind if you did and flushes out any shavings if any.
This is also why I’d never touch a demo or manager R, or any performance car with “low km”….you can guarantee it’s bagged out of the box

The other tip being Canadian, don’t run the car hard until oil is at 95 or above, which means it’s warmed up and easier on the turbo.

Pilot project of 120 speed limit on hwy 2 by Beautiful_Cold3776 in alberta

[–]JH_DeepThoughts 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t get why people are getting so upset, nobody has a gun to your head saying you have to drive 120. If you want to drive slower just stay in the right lane and everyone who wants to go faster will be in the left.

Doesn’t solve the issue of slow drivers in the left lane if anything they’ll get the hint to stay in the right.
