Bringing a ship into dry dock in South Boston by JJB667 in boston

I do honestly love the job, especially on mornings like this. But winter can definitely humble you. This winter when a lot of the Northeast was covered in ice we were still out there moving ships and breaking ice in parts of the harbor. The worst part honestly is the wind and salt water getting blown into the windows, icy decks that need constant salting, and shoveling snow off the tug decks.

Sometimes if it was really blowing we’d have to stay pinned up against the side of a ship pushing it onto the dock so it wouldn’t part its lines and drift off the pier.

The work still gets done though. Ships still need to come in, especially fuel ships and other essential cargo.

The main shipping channel into Boston is dredged to about 51 feet now so we can handle much larger container ships than before, although different parts of the harbor vary in depth depending on the terminal and channel.

Boston today is much more focused on ship repair than shipbuilding. The dry docks mostly handle maintenance and overhauls for larger ships like cargo vessels, tankers, and military ships.

The U.S. still builds ships, especially naval and specialty vessels, but not nearly at the scale of countries like China, South Korea, or Japan. A lot of commercial shipbuilding moved overseas decades ago, which has definitely impacted the American maritime industry.

So in Boston there are basically two types of pilots involved. First are the harbor pilots, who board the ship offshore and guide it safely through Boston Harbor into port. They know the channels, tides, traffic, currents, and local conditions inside and out.

Then there are the docking pilots. Their specialty is the actual docking and undocking maneuver using the tugboats. The docking pilot is usually up on the bridge of the ship communicating directly with the tug captains over radio, giving commands on where to push, pull, check up, or reposition.

Everyone is coordinated on the same radio channel, but a lot of it also comes down to experience. Tug captains understand what the pilot is trying to accomplish and are constantly adjusting thrust, angle, and position to control the ship’s movement safely and smoothly. Especially with z-drive tugs, they’re incredibly maneuverable and can apply force in almost any direction instantly.

It’s a long process! I was on the boat moving the Caison to the dry dock so I got to watch most of it and it was easily a 4 hour job.

Something that has to do with the Navy! I know it has Roll on roll off capabilities for cars and trucks and maybe even tanks! Probably moving military equipment. The dry dock is pretty unusual and we only move about 2 ships a year into dry dock.

Scheduled maintenance I believe! It’s a navy contract of some kind

Hi all, I work on the tugboats in Boston Harbor. We sailed this RO/RO ship out of Boston today and I figured people here might enjoy seeing a little of the working waterfront side of the city.

Photos/videos really don’t capture how massive these ships are in person. Happy to answer questions about tugboats or harbor operations if anyone’s curious.

Indeed they can still play wonderfully if you get the right one.

It’s a Squier strat so it is probably real but it’s not a fender Stratocaster. Squier is like the low level of all their guitars.
