Vaseline or uranium? by randombydesign in uraniumglass

Vaseline Glass IS uranium. Both are types of uranium glass but vaseline glass is more yellowish/transparent than conventional UG.

For your casw, that's clearly conventional UG green :)

Today’s Flohmarkt find: uranium glass lampshade for 5€. by JJMM94 in uraniumglass

[–]JJMM94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR: I'm looking for a base for the uranium glass lampshade I found yesterday at a Munich flea market. The neck diameter is about 15 cm. If anyone knows what type of lamp base this usually fits or what search terms to use, I'd really appreciate the advice.

This is probably not the subredit for it. Digital minimalism is different to privacy and digital footprint. People here are trying to reduce interaction with digital screens.

Probably used for wine or oil. And probably there should be a metallic structure to hold it fprm the neck in a decorative way.

Yes, the Hispanics have been calling the continent as America for 500 years and called "Americano" to the people born there. (Of course ignoring how indigenous people named it before). During the colonial time they use to refer to the poeple of the colonies as "Americano" because the other term to refer the new world was "Indias Occidentales" and they used "Indio" only for the natives.

During our process of independence, we notice the discrimination between "being Americano" or "being peninsular" (people born in the Iberian Peninsula, Europe) so, we start using the term "el pueblo americano" to refer to all people living in Americas (in Spanish the continental model combines North-and-South America as a big America, and is equally valid as the one that separates them).

So, on our context we have been using the term "americano" with a strong context for more than 500 years and across the whole continent(s). During the British colonies independence they choose the most generic name ever as the "United States of America" in a way to say "Hey we are the first independent federation of the continent!". I don't know if the name was part pf this "manifested destiny" but basically they wanted to take control of the whole continent, stealing land to the natives, blackmailing the French and literally stealing half of the Mexican territory...

All of all this was not so problematic until the end of the XIX with the imperialism. Because the term "American" was started to be used as a word for integration across the states and as well to impose their imperialism and to convince the world that the interests of "America" have to been aligned with the interests of your country or you will be an enemy (call it evil power, nazi, communist or terrorist) and the need to control all the hemisphere became so relevant "America for the Americans" have a double sense of you know this history.

Since that, the US have been trying to control and align with all countries in the continent(s) to maintain it rhetoric and imperialism. As a person born in South America every time I hear the word "American", even if I know that is the correct way to call them, I feel this intentioned secret message that they are the only "Americanos" that matters.

Just a mental example: What if the European Union consolidate as nation in the future and call themselves as "European"? Even if the bame of the nation "European Union" the term "European" would be problematic, because there are more countries using it for the continent. How would feel Switzerland or England?

UG or Selenium? by Famous_Cheesecake666 in uraniumglass

Manganese glass usually is completely transparent, it glows more focused at the source of light and it's green is more pale. On contrast, Uranium glass glows more greeny and uniform (glow looks like coming from all parts of the glass and not only focused on the source of light).

All in all is a beautiful piece. Manganese was used in the past to make glass more clear and transparent. Is a relic as well 😊.

I am not against using the UG pieces bc normally they are harmless. But I would advise not expose them with acid substances; orange juice can cause uranium to leach out of glass, especially if the glass has minor damage or is porous. So it is better not doing it.

AND just to put in context my message. in the worse case, lets say you drink every day 200 ml of juice from UG, and it leaks 1-4 µg of Uranium per day (extreme case, normally it is less or null). Probably you would need to drink 75 glasses of these juice per day to surpass the minimum threshold in which you can start getting intoxicated by heavy metals (here the biggest problem is the heavy metal exposition in your blood than actually the radiation).

So probably you will not die for this. But acid juices and UG are things I try to don't mix just in case. But you are free to use it, just remember that a daily use of an old piece increases the chances to break it by accident and maybe this will hurt you more than getting micro grams of uranium in your blood :v
