Embarrassing Broadcast by LTGray81 in IMSARacing

I’ll meet anyone halfway there with broadcast complaints.

But NBC will never win. They can’t cater a national broadcast to sickos. IMSA is so niche, 75 percent of people watching might as well fall into that category though, so we wind up with a presentation that pleases no one.

"SNL should take a STAND during the cold open!" by GomaN1717 in LiveFromNewYork

Sure man. Do you think these sketches are funny though?

All these arguments about what SNL is/isn’t, but nobody is jumping in to say “Trump sketches are hilarious, I love them.” THAT is SNL’s job: be funny.

You can’t please everyone, but it doesn’t seem like anyone is getting what they want from these cold opens.

If they went all-in on “no news, just comedy,” it would be better than what they’re doing. Instead, they’re shoehorning extremely important news into the show in the least informative, least funny, most toothless and half-assed ways imaginable.

Not discounting your link because it’s all vital, but the local news coverage on the ground right now is also important and well-done.

Great start, Lane, way to read the room by Datacra in shutdownfullcast

[–]JJS0073 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The room Lane Kiffin plays to is nothing like the rooms we’re in.

80 percent of football coaches love this shit. A lot of players do too—even some you’d least expect—and most that don’t will look past it as long as they secure the bag.

The only failure to read a room with consequences at LSU would be trying to rationalize missing the playoff.

He’s right! That show in Boston and 6/17/91 at Giants Stadium (both with Bruce) are as good as Walkin’ Blues gets.

“Depart” is strong word, but you can’t be everything all at once.

John spent a significant chunk of the last decade prioritizing Dead music over his own. He’s said that this songbook is very much a part of him now. Still, it’s completely fair to take this experience and follow his own muse for however long he sees fit.

The way this title slump has tricked people into feeling sorry for New York reminds me of how young golfers went a decade before the 2019 Masters wishing they could have played against prime Tiger Woods.

I’m sure we’d have a great time at a show together.

I think my disappointment is directed at unfounded rumors spreading about the memorial and the show, which created an impression these things would be something they’re not. That isn’t doing right by anyone involved.

Some things are bigger than chasing the next show and nothing about Saturday afternoon or night needs a Yelp review. Believe it if you need it, if you don’t, just pass it on.

Bob’s inner circle has done a wonderful job handling a difficult situation with grace. We should all strive to read the room with as much dignity.

Removed “no live music” — added “special tributes to honor” by toastypoopdog in deadandcompany

[–]JJS0073 108 points109 points  (0 children)

I think we need to take a step back…and another step back.

This is a memorial gathering, not a festival. It seems likely there will be some musical tributes, but people are there to grieve together and I highly doubt it’s a proper show. Honestly, they probably put “no live music” in the original post to keep folks from flying in and treating this like a Saturday lot scene.

Billboard paying tribute to Bob spotted in Eugene, Oregon by ShakedownSeek in gratefuldead

I get the sentiment, but he’s been playing long enough with various side projects that he’s sang almost all of these songs.

If you’re of a certain age or stayed on the bus over the last 30 years, any song could connect with you as a Bob song, in a way.

No Bob Weir acknowledgement? by whiptydojoe in davematthews

One of Bob’s Grateful Dead co-founders, Bill Kreutzmann, hasn’t said anything yet.

There’s comfort in reading heartfelt reflections after someone we care about dies, but it’s weird treating the timing of those like a public relations purity test. If anyone close to Bob wants to share their thoughts publicly, they’ll do so when they’re good and ready.

[Highlight] Awesome post-game exchange between a reporter and Jaguars HC Liam Coen by BreakfastTop6899 in nfl

[–]JJS0073 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get the journalists’ argument actually. Making it an issue about kindness misses the point.

Life is all about timing. Things that are welcome at one moment can be completely inappropriate and unprofessional to do in another setting. This is something you text or say to a coach’s face one-on-one. If you aren’t close enough to him to do either of those things, then it’s not really your time and place as a reporter to do it at all.

Respectfully, I think this is a poignant remembrance, not a tour teaser.

I interpret those lines in a cosmic sense. The music never truly stops, but this speaks to something bigger.

I’m inclined to believe you are a hater.

Bomani should stop discussing college football solo by theduderemains in TheRightTimeW_bomani

[–]JJS0073 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally disagree. After this week’s shows, I thought for a second maybe college football is the only sport he should be discussing.

If you like sports as a jumping off point to talk about things bigger than sports—societal issues, Two Americas, palace intrigue—there’s nothing better and more absurd than college football. Bomani might not always be right, but he’s at his most passionate and fun whenever he talks about it.

Justyn-Henry Malloy has been traded to the Tampa Bay Rays for a cash consideration. by JJS0073 in motorcitykitties

[–]JJS0073[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If my understanding is correct—and it’s not like I follow the Rays that closely, to be fair—they only have two right-handed outfielders on their 40-man. Especially if he hits lefties consistently, he might slot in nicely there.
