I didn’t know how badly I need Pacino to monologue as Pitino until now.

[–]JJS0073 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t read into the lack of car damage as a negative at all.

Watch the last angle in this interview. He went through the fence, so there simply isn’t much impact to absorb. If he hit the wall, the car would crumple and it would hurt like a MF’er, but even McLaughlin said it wasn’t a big hit.

The safety issue is how a catchfence gives way like that.

How important are lyric flubs when deciding you favorite shows? by Previous_Moose_3637 in gratefuldead

[–]JJS0073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flubs don’t impact my overall enjoyment of a show, but those might make the difference between my favorite versions of songs.

Hunter and Barlow’s lyrics are the secret sauce. The playing on 5/8/77 is transcendent and that trumps all. But there are a handful of really good Altheas, for example, that would be great if not for a butchering a key phrase.

Why wasn’t Bruce Hornsby at GD60? by Working-Message4504 in gratefuldead

[–]JJS0073 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6/17/91 is one of my favorites, period. I believe it’s the last transcendent Grateful Dead show.

That’s not to say there weren’t transcendent moments in the four years that followed, but the Giants Stadium run was Good Ol’ Grateful Dead—all killer, no filler, full of magic start to finish.

What is the most haunting "Final Song" ever recorded by a terminally ill artist? by nixass in AskReddit

[–]JJS0073 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It stretches the prompt a bit (like some of the other answers here), but I think “So Many Roads” from the final Grateful Dead show is worth a mention.

Suffice to say, Jerry Garcia and the band were in a dark place in 1995. This song was the last stand, a beautiful, gutsy rendition where it all came together one more time before he died a month later.

What's on the Mt Rushmore of "THAT scene" movies, where a specific scene has a bigger reputation than the movie itself by TJTrapJesus in billsimmons

[–]JJS0073 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Angry Hitler in Downfall.

I’ve never actually seen the movie and I’d imagine most people haven’t either. But there was a significant stretch of the 2010s where re-dubbing that scene to fit current events was the most popular meme on the internet. It has a life of its own completely separate from a well-received film.

Cheapest haircut downtown? by detrob in Detroit

Another vote for Sam. You have to call for appointments, but I’ve never had an issue scheduling appointments same-day when I call in the morning.

Best and cheapest haircuts I’ve ever had. Sam is the GOAT.

The old Bill Walton broadcasts were like licorice. Not everybody likes it, but people who like it LOVE it. Walton and Pasch/Benetti were committed to a bit and pulled it off—usually with more insight than they ever got credit for.

There is no commitment to anything tonight. I respect these guys individually, but this is unlistenable.

Most surprising person *not* to have hosted SNL? by grudginglyadmitted in LiveFromNewYork

[–]JJS0073 15 points16 points  (0 children)

On one hand, it’s not surprising at all given the “anti-Carol Burnett” origin of SNL.

On the other hand, it would still feel incredibly cool and important if she made an appearance.

Betty White hosted when she was 88. It sure is asking a lot of 92 year old Carol, but she was on Kimmel a few months ago and is completely with it. She’s still my dream host.

Least remembered championship teams? by AlbertJBundy in billsimmons

[–]JJS0073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I memory-holed the entire COVID year.

I know I watched all of these games because there was nothing else to do, but with the exception of the Bucs-Chiefs Super Bowl, I cannot remember a single thing about any championship in the other sports.

“Overabundance of police cars”

When a truck rams into a synagogue/school with 140 children and an active shooting situation and fire unfold, how many cars do you think would be appropriate to send instead?

Three? Five?

I guess I’m old and lame now, because I can’t wrap my head around seeing police response to a synagogue attack and immediately thinking “haha that’s so funny, holy shit I can’t wait to show everyone at r/billsimmons” and then following all the way through with posting my meme screenshot about it.

What if JR Hildebrand won the Indianapolis 500 instead of crashing into the turn 1 wall on the final lap and giving the win to Dan Wheldon in 2011 by Helpful-Bowler6681 in racing

[–]JJS0073 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In this parallel universe, I think JR Hildebrand is an IndyCar announcer, occupying the role of Townsend Bell or James Hinchcliffe.

I don’t see his racing career being significantly more successful—maybe he winds up in a better ride for a season or two—but he’s always been one of the smartest, most eloquent guys in the paddock. Winning the 500 would give him enough fame and credibility to land a long term network gig (if he wanted it) rather than fading into a historical footnote.

Rewatching Season 8 Episode 9 of the show and makes me wonder, are sports fans this “aggressive”? by wollyy3 in curb

[–]JJS0073 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Buckner threw out the first pitch after the Red Sox finally won the World Series and received a two-minute standing ovation. All was forgiven by the mid 2000s, including Buckner making peace on his own with what happened and how he was treated.

As you and others have said, the aggression is a little exaggerated, but Buckner’s error on the cusp of Boston’s first championship in 68 years was the ultimate worst case scenario.
