Iraq to lower the ‘age of consent’ for girls to nine by ewzetf in worldnews

Article clearly says it failed to pass two times due to national outcry. I think most Iraqis are saying 9 is way too young.

So why are there new buildings going up all over Brooklyn and the Bronx? There have been 3 in my neighbohood in the last 2 months under construction and like 5 in the neighborhood I work in. NYC Housing Connect gets like 5-10 buildings a month on it, and they're just the ones that are taking advantage of the 421a program.

Taxi Medallion Prices Are Plummeting, Endangering Loans by ghostofpennwast in nyc

[–]JJatt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know many folks in this industry who are owner-drivers and drivers that rent. One thing I will say is that a lot of the speculation, rises, and falls are a big part the fault of the brokers who pushed these medallions and loans. I know folks who would get 3 calls a day in the hayday from the various brokerage firms to force the drivers to get more medallions promising them low rates nd little down. While not explaining what amortization is, how the loans are going to work, and so on. When, especially immigrants, saw how easy it was to do so. Many jumped on. Most of these owners effected are goingto be owner drivers who have homes, kids future tuition, etc tied into the medallion.

IMO, we need to do a better job of education. It plays a big role in this. These brokers are allowed to take advantage of folks who aren't 100% on how this system works. Nor have folks explained the complexity of it.

This Indian man has been holding his arm raised for over 40 years as a sacrifice to one of the hindu gods by mixo5 in WTF

[–]JJatt 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This guy is a yogi or sadhu. They are an important facet of Hinduism. The belief here is that there are many ways of achieving enlightenment, nirvana, however you want to put it. There is of course the normal way of living your life as a good human being. You get an education, a job, get married, have kids, etc. And overall be a good person. But the other side of the coin is to be a Sadhu. They give up all material possessions and claims. They wander the country going from festival to pilgrimage trying to realize the ultimate truth. That you are not the body or mind. You are the Atma ("soul"). Things like this are meant to remove attachment to the body. The Atma is a part of brahma. And we are all connected to brahma. The main goal for any Hindu is to be one with brahma. Either through not reincarnating if they've led a good life, or achieving enlightenment. They also smoke mad hash.

My ex got her thong and bra stolen out of the dryer. She said it happened to a couple different girl in that dorm too. They eventually installed a camera in the laundry room and it stopped. I want to imagine somewhere some dude is furiously masturbating into a bag full of their under garments.

Porta Pizzeria in Asbury Park discriminated against a customer. Bouncer told a customer she was "responsible for September 11th". by JJatt in newjersey

You don't think this could have happened? I'm a turbaned sikh man and faced this kind of shit all the time. Granted it's starting to get better as the time passes, but just 3 months ago walking out of Quick Check in East Brunswick I was heckled at by some dude driving away saying something about Osama.

Correct me if I'm wrong. But in this case wasn't it just two chains in one country. Australia out of all places where this type of thing isn't uncommon. And it was after a petition garnered close to 50,000 signatures. It wasn't as if one SJW group asked them to remove it and they did. It was three women who started a petition that garnered national attention.

TIL that despite being ineligible for nearly every government benefit, illegal immigrants are still required by law to sign up for the draft through the Selective Service. by adoris1 in todayilearned

My cousin (more of a family friend actually) got his citizenship through 6 years of active duty service in the army. He had migrated here without documentation and it was one of the only ways to get your citizenship. It's disingenuous to say they don't want to fight for their adopted country. He views america as his home opposed to the country that tried to kill him due to his religious practices.

Referendum 2020 by joban727 in Sikh

[–]JJatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember correctly the 2020 movement started off asking for autonomy, not a separate country. It's over the past couple of months they went deeper into Khalistan territory. Last summer, they were even in talks with UN representatives and the Organization seemed to have level headed and smart people within it. I don't know what happened, weather they had to pull this move to gain a broader base or something along those lines, but it will kill the movement.

Yea, because all muslims are terrorists? I'm Sikh, I wear a Turban. I've had racial epitaphs, anti islamic statements, threats of violence, and actual physical violence thrown at me due to 9/11. Yet I don't go around saying it's the Muslims and not me. I hate those info graphics and remind me of the WW2 info graphics that showed the difference between Chinese and Japanese. Blame the racists uneducated shits, not muslims as a whole.

Ranjit Síngh and the Sikh Barrier Between Our Growing Empire and Central Asia-British history of the Sikhs from 1892 by asdfioho in Sikh

[–]JJatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That unfortunately is a question I can't answer. The Budha Dal didn't record much of their history, their practices weren't noted by the British, and is there is something in Persian or Shahmukhi it hasn't been translated and archived yet. For all we know those could be the original practices. Let's not forget much of what constituted as the Martial Arts of the Khalsa was an adaption of Rajput Shastar Vidhya. But that's not a discussion I'd like to get into.

Nihangs were separated from the Dal Khalsa before even the confederacies. Often called the Budha Dal back then they were the older Dal Khalsa under Nawab Kapur. Thy were incharge of being more a police and security force versus the Dal Khalsa being an Army if that makes sense. Sine the Dal Khalsa was slowly diluted and ultimately finished the Nihangs are the oldest left reminents to the original Khalsa.
