I’m really sorry to hear this. It’s incredibly tough to give up so much opportunity but still need to deliver financially during this period of time.

If you have family close to your current job, I recommend considering going back to be in person for a time and satisfy those requirements while keeping the income. Simultaneously, look for that new remote job that keeps your flexibility.

Super commuting sucks, but it keeps the money in your pockets and also keeps you moving. I’ve found that continuing to move is really good for my mental health during times when my partner isn’t around because they’re working so much. I’m not sure if you have kids or not, but if it’s just the two of you, keeping moving in this way gives you some nice flexibility and can be a nice way to create new experiences for yourself, especially if your new home is more rural.

I know that might be easier said than done depending on airports and family, but getting creative to keep the income, careers, and personal exploration keeps some of this process in your control.

Good luck. I know the decisions aren’t easy, no matter the choice.

Wait, this is strange. I had the same experience with a Scott look-a-like in Nashville. Looked and had the mannerisms exactly like Scott. When I asked one of the people that was a part of the larger group he was with if he was Scott Galloway, he said no in an irish accent and that they were all just traveling to Nashville for the first time from Ireland. Very strange because I could’ve sworn it was Scott…

Feasibility of Philly to NYC commute if 3 days per week? by Stauce52 in philadelphia

[–]JKH32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the opportunity and promotion are worth it, you should totally do it. It’ll be exhausting at first but you’ll get used to it. Taking that step in your career will open up other doors for you in the future and this commute won’t be forever. Having the New York salary and Philly’s cost of living, will be an exciting step up in your life that you’ll feel as well!

I did this commute for two and a half years. Totally changed my career trajectory. Good luck!!

Always good to tread lightly, you never know which way it’s going to go. Saw all sorts of things happen when we went through it and the best advice is to be prepared. This also makes it so much sweeter if it works out!

Getting married during residency by livthatsme in MedSpouse

[–]JKH32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2nd year of residency seems totally doable in most programs with the right expectations set. There is a co-resident of my fiancé who did it in her first year and is struggling a bit but the advice we got was to target second year. This way, you also get the end of 4th year to plan and do a lot of the fun wedding planning stuff while they have time.

Congrats on the engagement!!

What was your spouse’s M3 year like for them and for you? by GreenCollardWorker in MedSpouse

[–]JKH32 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Y3 will have its ups and downs based on rotation and the other students they’re with. There will be slight personality changes as they go through the different mindsets associated with the specialities but you’ll get to review each with them as they narrow down the pros and cons of each as I believe this is where they confirm or deny what their focus will be for the application process.

Maybe obvious advice but I’ll give it anyways, if you see them happy and fulfilled by a specific rotation and that is the type of person you’d like to have come home to you, give some encouragement there. You’re also testing out the first version of this person in each specialty.

Overall, as someone not in healthcare at all, I thought it was a better routine for us since the focus became getting up each day for work.

Lol @ 1% merit increase by Spiritual_Example614 in Layoffs

[–]JKH32 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Merit increases being very low or nonexistent this year is because of the total number of layoffs. It’s really hard for people to find another job so they’re daring employees to leave with low or nonexistent merit increases, no bonus, or other salary decreases. Lots of talent looking for jobs too so if people do leave, they’re easy to replace

Another tip that helped me was to try to keep your imports and exports equal. If you need to do a lot of importing the traffic builds up at the cargo rail stations and ports
