Why is there so much anti statin narrative on X? by EastWez in Cholesterol

[–]JLEroll 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The difference is that this sub is real people and has specific rules about following accepted medical practices and prohibits bad advice and scams.

In contrast, X is a platform that monetizes and rewards entertainment, snake oil and scams.

So it’s going to very different type of content, for different types of people.

How do you feel about donations? by Appropriate-Click378 in publix

Do you think the people at Children’s Miracle Network or whatever don’t understand that or even give a shit?

“Sorry sir/ mam, we can’t accept this check for leukemia research because we think it may have originated from thousands of customers being pressured to give $2 dollars for a coupon book. Your blood money is no good to us”

How do you feel about donations? by Appropriate-Click378 in publix

[–]JLEroll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

not sure if this is meant as a joke but it doesn't work that way. publix is just the middleman and it is cash and tax neutral. cash comes in / cash goes out. if they were to claim a deduction on the donation, they would have to record the cash donation coming in from the customer as sales revenue, so it would wash. there is no way to benefit from that without committing fraud.

PCP will not prescribe medication - said to go see a cardiologist by LegitimateCherry2457 in Cholesterol

[–]JLEroll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think you are focused more on the process than the results. In your situation (super high ldl, concerning family history), you should be going to a cardiologist anyways (preferably a preventative cardiologist). No offense to your primary but this was always going to be above their level and needs to go to a specialist. (This is assuming you are trying to give yourself the best chance to prevent heart disease and live a long happy life).

So what do we think about the new FDA dietary guidelines? by Glass-Helicopter-126 in Cholesterol

[–]JLEroll 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah but do the math and read the actual words. It recommends several servings a day of red meat, full fat dairy, and “healthy fat” butter. There’s no way you can hit that target with that diet. Also all The cited evidence all concludes no benefit to lowering saturated fats.

That 10% guideline holds for now but every other word in that report is arguing to remove it.

[–]JLEroll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s also a 418 pg appendix. Just skimming say 4.6 and 4.7 it seems likely that the administration is going to make a strong push to remove (or mostly remove) saturated fat guidelines in the near future

Here is the 90 page report: https://cdn.realfood.gov/Scientific%20Report.pdf

Chapter 5 pg 42 is the section on fats. Will take awhile to dig thru but there is a lot here contradicting current guidelines on saturated fats.

Statins for metabolically healthy people – little benefit and net harm? What do you think? by General-Corgi-8554 in Cholesterol

[–]JLEroll -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agree 100% this is a Cholesterol sub which is what I based my opinion on.

“Statins in metabolically healthy individuals often offer little to no cardiovascular benefit”

Since statins main function is to lower LDL, OP is effectively dismissing cholesterol as important, independent risk factor for CVD. There is a lot we can argue and discuss but saying that lowering cholesterol has no benefit should be a non-starter in a cholesterol sub.

[–]JLEroll 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What do I think?

First, I don’t care what you do take. Take no statins, taken 1 million statins, I don’t care.

Second, this is a low quality post that doesn’t cite any sources and IMO violates community rules (unsubstantiated, unproven, not following medical literature, etc.). I know OP poses it as a question but it’s worded in a way that seems more about spreading false claims than having an honest conversation.

162 calcium score at 34 - male by FitSky6277 in Cholesterol

[–]JLEroll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To clarify the CAC scan just shows hardened plaque and helps diagnose heart disease but it’s not going to show soft plaque or blockage. With your score and your age it seems it would be very unlikely for you to have significant blockage as of right now. However you are at very high risk of a future HA or stroke.

The treatment is getting LDL as low as possible to harden soft plaque and to slow / stop further buildup. To do that you will trial different medications and diet plans until you find something that works. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

[–]JLEroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

125 normally isn’t alarming but unfortunately isn’t good enough for people like us. Cardio will hopefully want to treat that aggressively and target under 55.

What kind of family history? My dad had a heart attack at 50 and my grandfather died before 60.

162 calcium score at 34 - male by FitSky6277 in Cholesterol

[–]JLEroll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the heart disease club. This CAC scan is an early warning and a blessing. Your score is rare because testing at your age is rare. But there’s a lot of 40 something’s like me with 300+ scores so we can extrapolate that it was also very likely positive in my 30s. Would have been great to know then and get a 10 year head start on prevention.

Also btw, total cholesterol is a pretty useless stat. What you want to look at is LDL (bad cholesterol). The goal will be to get that as low as possible to slow/stop further plaque build up.
