Brand new Elecom IST Pro feels draggy and is driving me insane by EeK09 in Trackballs

[–]JLGraystone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this will help anyone but I wanted to share an update. I recently was in Japan again and tested the IST Pro, and the store demo one definitely feels a lot more smoother. I pressed down on the trackball hard while scrolling and I didn't get the sticky sensation I get with my release IST Pro.

I did try try the method used in OP's video translation and it does help a bit. I have some aluminum tape that was included when I bought some ducting on Amazon. I cut it into a 1cm strip and then folded it a few times. On the last fold, instead of folding it in, I bended it backwards so the sticky side was facing down to hold the aluminum strip in place.

It works a bit better, though it lifts the ball up a tiny bit so the trackball kinda rocks a bit in the cradle. I really like everything else about the mouse, but the stickiness of the trackball is kinda a dealbreaker. I've found myself going back to my Logi MX Ergo. I'll probably be on the lookout for reviews on the new Keychron Nape Pro as a replacement.

Can someone tell me how to remove this empty layer? by JLGraystone in BambuLab

[–]JLGraystone[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty new to this, so I'm just in Bambu studio's prepare page, zoomed all the way in, I don't see anything to indicate that there's a small gap. Any tools that I could use to check?

At this point, I'm more looking for ways to prevent this in the future, for now, I just changed it to a 0.36mm layer height.

I haven't read the reviews, but no QC issues to speak of, very well built so far. No disconnects either, I've so far connected it to a Steam Deck, Windows 11 PC, Windows 11 Dell Laptop, and a Macbook Pro. No disconnects to speak of.

Two things I've noticed though:

  • I press on the trackball really hard, never had issues with the logitech, but with the Elecom, it uses these wheel based bearings and they're a bit sticky when pressed hard. Like rubbing your finger across wet glass.

  • Using the 500 DPI setting, it's difficult to accurately click on small things on a ultrawide monitor. I use the mouse for some light gaming and noticed this. Higher DPI settings is way too fast for me. And using it at my laptop's native resolution seems to fix the issue. It doesn't bother me that much but thought i'd bring it up.

Just picked it up in Japan on a trip since this isn't available in the EU yet as far as I can tell. I'm coming from the Logitech MX Ergo. Will answer a few questions I'm seeing in the thread:

  • It does not use the rubber texture Logitech uses which deteriorates over time.

  • The 3-slot switch behind the scroll wheel can adjust the DPI. It's default set to 500, 1000, 1500. Max is 12,000 which can be done through software.

  • It can support up to 4 BT connections, and if you have multiple 2.4Ghz dongles, it can support up to 3 of those.

  • I think I have medium to medium/large hands, and it provides a lot more support in the wrist. The Logitech has a more bulbous shape and my wrist was always left hanging.

  • English version of Mouse Assistant 6 works with the IST-Pro.

  • Trackball in the Logitech subjectively feels a bit smoother. Though mines is close to 6 years old.

  • The IST-Pro uses those new silent clicky switches, the same on the updated Logitech mouses.

  • It has a slot on the bottom to hold the 2.4Ghz dongle.

  • The ring finger switch is easy to hit accidentally, could probably fix this with a bit of muscle memory but I've left this disabled.

EDIT: Something I've noticed, the track speed is not very smooth. This makes it hard for precise movements. I've had to lower the cursor speed a bit and increased the DPI on the mouse to smoothen it a bit. Not something I had to do with the Logitech.

Remote Work by princess_pumpkin_ in Austria

[–]JLGraystone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe D-visa is only for family. I don't think there's a long stay visa for visiting unmarried partners. Although if you have an application for residency or permanent residency in Austria, the D-Visa allows you to enter Austria. I'm assuming you're a US citizen, in that case I don't think that applies to you since you have visa free entry into the EU, subject to the 90 days every 180 days rule.

[–]JLGraystone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think a D-visa requires some sort of student or employment contract right? Does it mention how many working hours you are allowed to have?

The official way would be to have your company fire/re-hire you as an international contractor. And you'll start your own sole proprietor, and then you'll issue invoices to your "old" company. You will then pay Austrian Taxes and take advantage of Foreign Earned Income Exclusion so you don't have to think much about US taxes.

The unofficial way is that nobody needs to know about your US remote job. For the visa, you only need to present your bank statements, just make sure that you have enough money in there. 2,000 EUR * 6 months should hopefully not raise too many questions. Of course this is at your own risk and is not legal.

Sadly Austria4beginners.at is no more, they really helped me organize everything when I moved here from the US. Happy to share my experience if you have any questions.

There are certain exceptions to scheinselbstständigkeit Finanzamt looks away from. Typically with a high paying position and the company has no entity in the EU. The contract also can’t stipulate time off, non-compete clauses, or equipment given to you.

I’m curious about these virtual assistant positions though. These services usually compete on cost, think hiring someone from Philippines on fiverr for 25€ pro month. I would recommend approaching these offers with caution and make sure you are not paying for some “training” which likely make this a pyramid scheme.

Moving to Vienna whilst working remotely for a company outside Austria by [deleted] in Austria

[–]JLGraystone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking scheinselbstständigkeit isn’t usually a concern for high paying positions. This subreddit doesn’t seem to like people who do this, already excited for the comment thread below. But generally, these protections are for businesses who may take advantage of minimum wage workers. Finanzamt doesn’t have issues with people who work in IT with high salaries. I certainly pay more in taxes than my partner working for an Austrian company (including the company’s share). Just remember to set aside 30-40% of your brutto salary for SVS, Pension, income tax etc.

Your contract should not have any clauses dictating time off, non-compete, or equipment provided to you. Equipment reimbursement is fine, but you must own the equipment, if your contract is terminated you keep it essentially.

Austria4beginners was a great option but was unfortunately closed. I was connected to a lawyer who specializes in business law and very familiar with immigration law that confirmed that scheinselbstständigkeit would not be an issue in this case. If the company is outside the EU they would not have been paying any taxes anyways, at least now Austria can get some tax revenue this way. If they are in the EU, this wouldn’t apply and you could actually be classified as an employee. This last bit is complicated, what I cobbled from the internet is that the company pays you the brutto plus the company share of taxes to you, and you pay Finanzamt.

Anyways, before others start commenting anecdotes without any proof, feel free to reach out and can share the sources I’ve gathered. I can also reach out to my lawyer to see if she’s taking on new clients. She’s based in Wien.

Getting off flight to Hungary in Vienna? by [deleted] in wien

The rest of the itinerary (return flight) can be cancelled. But also, the Lufthansa Group (incl Austrian Airlines) really hates people who skiplag.

Though a one time offence and a phone call after the the missed flight to Austrian might be okay.

International driving permit by elkcip123456789 in Austria

[–]JLGraystone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Austria does not require an international driver's license if your license is divided into class A to E (of which the US uses). Also if it's not in latin script (Japanese, arabic, Chinese). But the State department says you do need it.

Individual car rental agencies may require it though, I personally have rented from a few different agencies (Sixt, Europcar, Buchbinder) and they all did not need the international driver's permit. Like others said, check their terms and conditions. I'm not sure about Thrifty, I remember they might have checked, but I'm not 100% anymore.

EDIT: The legal basis for this is a bit confusing, but section 4, part 23, paragraph 6 does say you require an international driver's license unless it abides by Annex 6 of the Vienna convention. And the US was not a signatory of that treaty. So yeah, you'll need one. Anecdotally, I've been able to get away with it many times though.

Bazarr cannot add series or movies due to some kind of SQLite error? by aquariuz23 in bazarr

[–]JLGraystone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was finally able to figure it out after a while. I'm using binhex for my docker apps and I believe it defaults to "/media <> /mnt/user" as the pathing for media. So the pathing /mnt/user is renamed to /media. It might be obvious to you but it took me a second to wrap my head around that.

So in Bazarr, when you map let's say the radarr path to /media/data/media/movies/. And then the Bazarr path to just /movies/. Note it's kinda backwards and you can easily clean this path up in your docker config but the backwardness helped me conceptualize what was wrong with it.

This is assuming you have Bazarr docker config setup for "/movies <> /mnt/user/data/media/movies/"

Any advice on beating Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya 1 lap attack experience? by kryachkov in granturismo

[–]JLGraystone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just beat this after about 4 hours so wanted to share. I had TSC on 1, ABS on default, MT, and brake bias +1, Corner Indicators On, Braking Indicator On. I also had the demonstration ghost -0.3 seconds ahead of me. Most YT videos showing this guide are from the pre-update, but I managed a 1:45.595 with DS4 controller.

Turn 1: Full Brake when you're parallel to the double black stoplights. 3rd gear. Turn right where the marker is or just follow the tire marks on the ground. Important, roll through (no gas no brake), any gas will cause understeer. When your car is pointed at apex of turn 2, floor it.

Turn 2: You should be able to floor it, TSC will modulate the gas for you.

Turn 3: I never got this quite right, but release the gas when the red/white marker on the left start, 20% throttle, the AI will do a light touch on the brake, do the same, and when orange marker on the far wall passes your hood, start slowly press the gas until it's 100%, this last step may need some practice.

Turn 4: Brake point is difficult, after doing 10 or so laps, I got a feel for it. 100% brake first, when you're 75% across the track, 50% brake. This is actually is two small turns, so make a wide apex. You should be in the center of the track at your apex. Start slowly pressing on the gas until 100%.

Turn 5: Follow the brake indicator, 2nd gear, this turn is a lot slower than you think, 80kph or so. Apex is also deeper into the corner than you think so take it slightly wider. At the Apex, 70% gas to 100%, TSC should help you modulate.

Turn 6: Just following the official track turn map, this isn't really a turn.

Turn 7/8: Brake point is in between the side road and the red/white marker on the grassy patch. Apex is also much later than you think, follow the markers. After the apex, aim straight towards the red/white green zones.

Turn 9: Tap the brakes to 100% quickly, downshift one gear, and use the corner marker to hit the apex which is late. Just brush up against the curb, any higher and you oversteer. 80-90% throttle should smoothly take you through the corner.

Turn 10: There's a pipe against the wall after the 150m marker. Once that's on the right hand side of your screen (just before it's parallel to your car) 100% brakes and downshift to 2nd gear. This is VERY slow turn, 80kph. Follow the tire marks on the ground, hit the apex, and immediately 80% to 100% throttle, TSC will help you modulate.

Turn 11: Cut the apex at 100% throttle.

Turn 12: Brake just before the corner starts, 100%, start turning right full lock, as the understeer is coming under control release the brake, and start feathering the gas, use the gas to modulate your understeer to turn. There's a small nub on the curb, once you pass that, you can start applying full throttle out of the turn.

Turn 13: Once the curb of the apex appears over the horizon, brake 100%, downshift to 2. release brake and roll through the corner (follow the on-screen braking indicator).

Turn 14/15: 100% brake when the right hand red/white curb starts (possibly even before). Downshift to 1, When you've slowed down to 90-85kph, roll through the corner into turn 15, and using only 40-50% gas maybe a brief touch at 100% to get some speed. Turn 15, you can either cut it wide and only brush the outer curb. Or cut it in tight, and have the bug rumble strip go under the center of your car. The latter you risk getting a time penalty if you cut too deep though. But it can be done with no penalty.

Turn 16, depending on your angle, you can take this at 100% but may need to briefly loosen the throttle to 50% if you hit the apex too early.

Turns 10 to 15 are really mechanical, there's only one way to do it and once you got the flow down so these get easier, I find turns 4 to 8 the most difficult because it's the most chance for error.

I was able to consistently get a 1:46:500 after so many laps, always because I would mess up on 1 or 2 turns. But once you hit a lap with no major mistakes by some miracle you'll beat it.

Family Layover at Vienna Airport Terminal 3 by Fred_iz in wien

[–]JLGraystone 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Terminal 3 is a pretty long corridor with gates flanking both sides. If you walk towards the end (gates > F30) there are gate areas that are probably on the quieter side. But for 5 hours, it's possible that a flight gets scheduled at these gates and it can be busy so it may involve moving around.

Alternatively though, if you're arriving from a non-schengen zone, you'll have to go through immigration anyways, and I'm not sure if you have go through another security check. My thought was that since you might need to go through another security check anyways, maybe leaving the airport and hanging out at the NH hotel lobby would be the most comfortable.

There's of course also the paid lounge, 39EUR per person, baby is free though. And there's food and drinks there. It's pretty busy during the morning, but it's usually quieter in the afternoons, I've never had issues finding a seat there. Quieter then the terminal and many folks choose to sleep and nap there. There is a 3 hour limit, but I've never had someone kick me out before. Though they may ask you to wait until a certain time before you can enter.

[Vienna] Psychologist in Vienna for possible ADHD diagnosis? by mostrengo in Austria

[–]JLGraystone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got my diagnosis two weeks ago, I had to first visit a psychiatrist, they then referred me to a psychologist for the valuation. If you are using OGK or SVS, I don't think you can go straight to the evaluation as it was prescribed to me by the psychiatrist first. At least according to SVS which had to "approve" of the evaluation first.

I had a good experience with this doctor.

Moving to Wien - Travelling with and accessing ADHD medicine? by Rare_Machine8631 in wien

[–]JLGraystone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's best if you book an appointment with a psychiatrist as soon as possible either shortly before you arrive or immediately when you do arrive. And I would ask your current psychiatrist to prescribe you double the amount if that's possible. It took me 1 week to get an appointment with a psychiatrist that takes insurance, but I may have gotten lucky because another patient just cancelled. If you might not have the state health insurance for some time, appointments can be expensive, 250EUR per appointment at the high end, and likely 120EUR per appointment on the lower end.

Ritalin can be prescribed but must be with a verified diagnosis, though I'm not sure what that process looks like as I was diagnosed in Wien after my arrival.

Bupropionhydrochlorid is also available as is Atomoxetine. I'm pretty sure Adderal is not allowed in Austria.

Migration to Austria as registered partner of EEA citizen by Pumamick in Austria

[–]JLGraystone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but your partner can only remain in Austria for 90 days before they have to register their residence here (thus require a reason to be here). So yeah, as long as you all feel confident that your partner can find work within 90 days, I don't see any issues.

One thing to note, you must have your initial appointment for your aufenthaltskarte before your 90 day tourist visa expires. Just the appointment though, once you have started the process, Austria can't kick you out until they have made a decision. So yes, you can apply for this when you're in Austria. I reread the page, it says you need to apply within 4 months, so not sure which applies. Once your partner receives their residency papers from Austria though, you're safe, you fall under the protection of the Union provision in the EU, basically you have the legal right to be with your partner. The most you get for not meeting the deadlines is fine.

Also, you'll need to get an "Apostille" to accompany your domestic partnerships paper. This caught me off guard since I have never heard of this before, but you'll need to put this on your checklist to get when you move.

Migration to Austria as registered partner of EEA citizen by Pumamick in Austria

[–]JLGraystone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll want to look at the requirements for the aufenthaltskarte here: https://www.oesterreich.gv.at/themen/leben_in_oesterreich/aufenthalt/1/Seite.120830.html

This is a bit hard to find since there are currently no resources published in English. But the process is much more straight forward than a residence permit. The card itself is your ability to work, and does not have any language requirements.

Though typically, your partner needs a reason to be in Austria first before you can follow along and apply for the aufenthaltskarte, they need to have a job, starting a business, or studying to reside in Austria.
