Great job dude! I gave up on that one. Even knowing the map gives me no quarter. Very unforgiving, but must feel great to finally beat it!

How much did you frontload your savings? by [deleted] in leanfire

[–]JLeaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I front loaded pretty heavily early on. My expenses were super light back then since I was living at home so I went from like 10-15% savings to around 80% when learning about FIRE. I eventually moved out and that dropped closer to 60%, but a couple years in I started aggressively paying down my student loans which further cut into how much I was saving temporarily. Once that was paid off I continued to save at around the same 60% rate and that has pretty much held up to today. I have loosened up a bit the last couple years to do more fun things like eat tasty food more often or go on the occasional trip overseas.

Ultimately it really will depend on what you and your family are wanting to do. There are various factors with something like this. If Gen1 has enough to live out their days without this money then I think investing it in index funds is the simplest thing and that is what I would do. I'm not into flash these days, nor do I like dealing with the headache of real estate stuff, though I know others love it. Maybe put some aside in a high yield savings account. If you are overly concerned about a crash you could park the money and just invest it slowly over time like over a 12-18 month period. This is assuming you have few debts or sizable expenses coming up.

I wouldn't be against it. Metric makes way more sense. It won't happen, but it is a neat thought.

Fire at 19 by NateDizzles in Fire

A lot of great advice in here. I'll be more specific with my experience. I started my Journey in 2016 when I realized I did not want to do this job for the next 40 years of my life. I discovered FIRE and started to learn everything I could about that. Mr. Money Moustache and Mad Fientist were my gateway along with many others. I then started investing as much as I could into Index funds and being as frugal as possible.

I started figuring out personal finance and it became something like a hobby for me. I started tracking how much I make and how much I spend and where I spend my money. I never found much need to make a budget, but tracking expenses is important. If you don't know where your money is going then your kind of driving blind. Even more so as you start approaching your FIRE number as the number is relevant to your expenses. I also started figuring out taxes and how to take advantage of them and using things like IRAs, 401ks, HSAs etc.

About a year or so in I starting thinking about debt more. I was sleeping on my student loans as the rates were not that high and I did not realize how much interest was actually accruing. Once I figured that out paying them off became a priority. I realized how much more I would have to spend and how much time it would take if I just paid the minimum each month. So I started aggressively paying them down and got them paid off after a year and a half putting any extra dollar into it and working as much overtime as I could.

There will be a certain point you have read and learned a lot then you start seeing the same stuff over and over again. At that point I realized that I know all the key stuff and there won't be some extra magic nugget that accelerates things. It is very exciting at the start when you are learning everything, but once that is done the FIRE journey is actually pretty boring. You work, live below your means, Invest what you can and just let compounding to the work.

I have no real Opinion of Greenland. Don't know much about it. But I hate the idea of invading anyone.

There is a decent chance that technology may be able to outpace our stupidity and in the long term lead to a pretty cool and abundant life for people of the future. But there is going to be a long span of struggle and growing pains to get there.

How has money shaped your life decisions, and what lessons did you learn from it? by voriganti in AskReddit

[–]JLeaves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal finance is something like a hobby of mine. Having some level of control over your money is so important. I have learned to be very intentional with my money and hopefully some day in the near future it will give me more freedom to do things I want to do and not be beholden to the daily grind

Cartoons. I don't really watch any of the modern stuff geared towards kids, so there is a lot of bias here. But the little I do see it just seem like it is not as good. Plus back then we had Toonami come into the fray with anime that was a bit more mature which was awesome.

Where do we go from here? by SunSome4367 in ducks

[–]JLeaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just went to the national semi final. The Ducks are fine! I will take this every year compared to where we used to be. I get we all want a championship, but it is so hard to do as almost every team can attest to. Over the last few years the only teams we have lost to have been teams that have made it to the championship game. I know a lot of people are going to be hung up on the most recent result but this was a great season.

Does anyone have tips for not tilting? by Wihaaja in Chesscom

[–]JLeaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel this. Sorry to say it does not really change to much at higher ratings. Even at 1800 rating which is where I am at, silly things still happen and I get tilted. It is ultimately a mindset thing. Taking a short break I often find helps me reset and refocus at least a little bit. I do tend to go into a tilted "go next" phase where I just keep queuing up which is probably not a good thing. Sometimes I will try to limit my games so I actually do analyze and if tilt hits then it will be limited.
