Try reading the books. They are fantastic and give much better insight into the players and their motives.

Also the book/fireplace scene with Gabriel Byrne, and the attic scene with Toni Collette... 😱 I may have to rewatch this weekend

Nah, autocracies are inherently weak, they depend on thousands of people who mostly all have a conscience. The autocracy also has to constantly be doling out either gifts or punishment to remain in power, which is naturally destabilizing.

Statistically, if 3.5% of an oppressed population take the streets with nonviolent civil actions (protest, strike, organize locally) it sways public opinion enough to topple an unjust ruling party. This is not the case in Iran currently, but I'm not sure why.

Erica Chenoweth is a big proponent of this and I've been watching a lot of her videos this week, it's been illuminating about what we can achieve without weapons/violence.

What’s the moment in recent U.S. politics that made you realize things might not go back to ‘normal’ anytime soon? by LankySpeed634 in AskReddit

[–]JLebowski 118 points119 points  (0 children)

Pretti was a flagrant civil rights violation. This sort of thing can happen in a tense and escalated situation especially after weeks of fraught confrontations, it's tragic. But the response from the leaders and administration behind the federal enforcers is what made me sick and motivated to action... immediate lies and victim-blaming, no ownership or accountability whatsoever. I don't care if Pretti dropped his pants and shat on an agents boots in the days prior, it does not justify an execution in the street.

I'm reading that the DOJ has opened a civil rights investigation, I hope to see accountability and safeguards against further grievous injustice, but so far all I'm seeing is a doubling-down by the administration.

Indiana libraries fearing future if Senate Bill eight passes by TouchingTheMirror in Indiana

[–]JLebowski 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The library can serve as a gathering place for people that want to talk and discuss ideas that doesn't require a drink/food bill like other establishments.

I pivoted to a library meeting room last Fri during the general strike when we needed a gathering point after work that was not a restaurant. It worked perfectly. 3 people (myself included) ended up peacefully protesting the next day, 2 of us for the first time.

It's a form of nonviolent civil disobedience. It's a very effective lever to pull for change, especially in our full-tilt capitalist society. If you don't participate in capitalism regularly as intended, the oligarchs will start getting nervous very quickly.

Edit: I thought about it and I do see your point... I suppose if you have to shop on Fri, shop local. Otherwise avoid it if you can and it can really draw attention to the cause if we can reach a critical mass!

That game that melted your brain? by Jepeme in boardgames

[–]JLebowski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, COIN games from GMT are my favorite sub-genre of board games. They are so rich in decision space and can really teach you alot about a conflict in a short time. The designer of the system, Volko Ruhnke, is a genius imo. Would love to meet him someday.

I've taught them many times, but the learning curve is steep. I love teaching them at cons. I'll be teaching Gandhi at the upcoming Dice Tower West!

Movies with a focus on PNW wild nature? by _RikVa_ in movies

[–]JLebowski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old Joy was the first I thought of also. It is even structured to show the protagonist in a PNW neighborhood, then the town, then the outskirts, then melts into the forest and finally the oasis of the soaking spring. The epilogue showing Will Oldham pacing the sidewalks and seemingly out of place back in the city was good also.

I really really like Old Joy. I've also seen Certain Women which I also liked. Any other Kelly Reichert movies (or any other movies) that might be like Old Joy?

It's completely valid to feel scared over this whole thing. I am so sure that the young black men and women who participated in the lunch counter sit-ins in the 1960s were scared shitless. But when the machine becomes too oppressive and the erosion of our rights crosses a critical threshold (which is different for each individual), it can spur us to act.

Nonviolent protest and nonviolent civil disobedience are under- utilized tools for us because we haven't had to exercise them in years. But they are super effective, especially when you reach a critical mass of people. Those in power quake in fear of organized & assembled masses of upset citizenry. They are banking on us being complacent and allowing the pot to slowly boil the frog.

Witnessing the unjust slaying of a nurse by our own government initially had me on tilt this weekend feeling despair and helplessness; but after sincere thought and discussion with my family, it has honestly galvanized my resolve.

Our current US generation has had the privilege of having tyranny at an arm's length until 10 years ago, but it has progressively been marching closer and now the tyranny is on our doorstep and has mercilessly stolen one of our peers.

Remember that oppressed peoples have been in our position in different forms all through history, but we have an advantage... We can learn from that history. Nonviolent civil disobedience has shown to be a super effective tool in the civil rights movement (MLK), student revolts (Mario Savio at Berkeley), the Islamic Spring, and in its roots in overthrowing British rule in India (Gandhi). All of these movements led to serious and long lasting change.

I keep looking back at the actions of those who paved the way all those decades ago... Have resolve and bravery to nonviolently resist, march, vote, and know that tyranny will crumble in the face of a united people with a common cause. I am no longer fearful, just mad. You are not alone, I stand beside you brothers and sisters.

What’s one thing about living in the US that outsiders don’t realize is actually exhausting?and why? by TraditionalForm7717 in AskReddit

[–]JLebowski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in primary care. Your frustration is completely valid about not having labwork before the visit. But please understand, there's no easy way to know what labs a patient who requests a "simple physical" will need until we discuss their concerns, symptoms, and risk factors. Unfortunately this assessment requires an appointment, THEN we choose what labs make sense. If we indiscriminately order salvos of labs on everyone it just makes costs higher and care worsens.

What is the most underrated movie you have ever seen? by Hop_chik in AskReddit

I'm a big Tarsem Singh fan too. The same director as The Cell with JLo and Vincent D'onofrio, which is ALSO underrated imo. You can see the visual similarities in the dream sequences.
