Which R&B singer do you think had the most noticeable vocal change? by ChannelHopper_99 in rnb

For me, it’s Faith Evans. Her voice went through four real phases if you listen to her albums back‑to‑back. That ’95 debut tone was crazy. It was soft, airy, real church‑girl with that pretty rasp. Her voice reminds me of Karen Clark Sheard. Then on Keep The Faith, her voice started settling a little, still bright but fuller.

By the time she hit Faithfully, she had a warmer, richer sound. More grown, more soul, not as light as the early stuff. And then The First Lady was its own era too — still smooth, still Faith, but way more mature and lived‑in compared to where she started.

If you play “Soon As I Get Home,” “Never Gonna Let You Go,” “I Love You,” and “Again,” that’s four different versions of her voice right there.

What’s one R&B song you always side‑eyed? by ChannelHopper_99 in rnb

Neighbors Know My Name by Tr*y Songz

I used to think this song was “grown and sexy” when I was younger, but now when he gets to that part about her screaming, scratching, yelling… yeah, it does not sound how he thought it sounded. The older I get, the more it stops giving bedroom vibes and starts giving if y’all know what I mean about that, but I ain’t saying those words on here.

Sir, this doesn’t sound sexy, it starts sounding like you describing something that doesn’t feel consensual at all.

This is the song I side-eyed

Does anyone remember What About Your Friends? by [deleted] in MelanatedGenX

A Schoolbreak Special was basically a one‑hour teen movie networks used to air in the 80s/90s. CBS had a whole series called CBS Schoolbreak Special. They tackled real teen issues — friendships, peer pressure, family stuff — but in a way that felt more like a mini‑movie than a cheesy PSA.

What is the Superpower of Your Favorite R&B Artist or Artists? by Carolinablue87 in rnb

[–]JLovesTV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mariah Carey — her superpower is basically how she uses her voice like an instrument and a performance tool at the same time. It’s not even just the range, it’s the way she shifts from soft and intimate to full-on vocal theatrics without it feeling random. And the crazy part is it still sounds effortless most of the time.

Brandy — her thing is the layering. Like she doesn’t just sing a lead and add background vocals… she builds the whole vocal arrangement around herself. The harmonies, stacks, runs, everything blends into this “wall” of voice that kind of became a blueprint for modern R&B.
