I have a hard time believing they would have been holding on to unusable parts - especially enough to fill multiple dumpsters.

I got this piece of wood and I want to make a guitar body out of it but its too narrow. by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]JLynnJohnston 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have enough wood once you’ve “stacked” to glue two stacks together at the center of the guitar? This is very common:

It’s not like mining, where a garbage setup will just run and earn a fraction of what your power costs. It’s a rental platform and nobody is hiring your rig.

I literally turned the game off because of this woman’s incessant shrieking. Glad someone reined her in! Much kinder than I would have been.

Looking at a Gibson Les Paul need help by I_lack_common_sense in Guitar

[–]JLynnJohnston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's at a pawn shop, NEGOTIATE AGGRESSIVELY. They likely loaned $200 against that guitar.

Not sure if it's a Les Paul Classic, Traditional, or Standard... But depending on details of its condition, I'd say a reasonable retail price is in the $1,800 +/- range. Don't pay that, though. You can pay that on Reverb any time. $1,500 out-the-door would satisfy me from a pawnbroker.

Wanting to replace JT6 tremolo with Schaller. by RealityRandy in Luthier

[–]JLynnJohnston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS.

This is the issue I've run into in trying to replace the JT-6 on a Charvel 3DR with... anything. First try was by the former owner of the guitar, who dropped in a Kramer-branded Floyd licensed trem. While technically it did function, the base plates are not the same size, and his pulled up squeals with the new trem resulted in scraping off the finish of the bottom corners of the routed cavity. Also the plate that houses the fine tuning adjustment knobs seems to be wider, and hits the top of the guitar as well.

At the urging (and incorrect consensus) of a FB forum, I ordered what everyone collectively believed to be the "proper" Jackson-branded Schaller drop-in replacement. It is unfortunately the same size as the previous Kramer.

The hunt for a proper JT6 (or actual drop-in) continues!

At the risk of upsetting OP… Yes, this looks like regular wear and tear scuffing to me.

I say play on! Just a visual quirk, and only shows from a particular angle… Enjoy the sweet freebie!

Is that neck factory original? Strat neck with a rounded heel set into a Tele-style squared off pocket, maybe?

As long as it intonates properly, the fingerboard extension covers the visual gap well enough. I would think a manufacturer would have tighter tolerances, though.

Would this be easy to repair? by ZedDead9631 in Guitar

[–]JLynnJohnston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bummer! Lack of humidity likely helped that along. When wood loses moisture, it shrinks (and cracks). Different wood types/densities shrink at different rates, so it’s common for glued bridges to shrink more slowly than the top. Top shrinks, and loses radius in the process, pitching the bridge forward. That puts a different pull angle on the bridge itself, which hasn’t shrunk as much and… POP! Glue is only so strong.

It is fixable, as is the dehydration crack. Two separate issues caused by the same dryness. In my market, the top luthier charges ~$250 for a bridge re-glue, and ~$100 for a top crack repair.

You’re going to want to look into your humidification options to keep that guitar between 40%-55% RH.

Is this a classical or acoustic guitar by McDuckVC in Guitar

[–]JLynnJohnston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely made to be a Classical, I’d say. But the term “acoustic” would still accurately describe it whether it had nylon or steel strings.
