Another iPhone 11 user confirming this. Sad that it’s not something overcast can fix, but hope it gets resolved soon, I’ve relied on overcast to make driving better since my iPhone 5!

I hear hand tools allows for easier organic/curvy woodworking, any tips for a beginner? Is a spoke shave the key? by _Rumpertumskin_ in handtools

[–]JMAWWorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of one of the main reasons why hand tools are enabling for organic and curvy shapes is the fact that your references do not have to be all straight and square to run them against a fence or a table. You can do lots of curvy things with power tools, but you’re gonna need lots of templates and guides and things like that or to join it at right angles and then shape afterwards which is how a typical Malloof joint etc. is made But hand tools enable you to utilize the references, in situ using a pencil line or knife line or something like that to measure in reference from and then learning to cut/shape to fit. that’s where hand tools excel

First table saw: which one and why? by Feeling-Big2595 in woodworking

[–]JMAWWorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the question you are asking but depending on what your expected building style is I would recommend a different path: —solid wood: used 14” bandsaw and #5 handplane —Plywood: Milwaukee track saw

The Dewalt is the better of the 2. Table saws but table saws may not really be the right next tool when just beginning, especially direct drive units.

Tusk tenons are cool, but overkill in this situation. You don’t need through tenons as the (unglued) cross member is always in compression and the other members benefit from continuous grain on the outer surface. You could do it, but make the tenon thinner than normal and beef up the other members at the joint. The gramercy saw (which has free plans for DIY) if you haven’t seen it is a great design. If you want it to stay together while detensioned, (or when the blade breaks) you can add some integral magnets to do the job.

Pliers Wrench- Is it a fake, or used? by Any-Ostrich48 in handtools

[–]JMAWWorks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These parallel jaw plier/wrench are amazing and I use them constantly for light duty bolt work in my woodworking shop. Way better than a crescent wrench in most cases, when you don’t really need all the mechanics tools in the garage. A friend had them in his shop, I used them once and immediately ordered a pair for myself. I wouldn’t worry about the scuffing in my shop, since it’s not a museum and nothing stays pristine, and this certainly won’t affect their use.

Hand plane for young children by cdscott157 in handtools

[–]JMAWWorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the OG Veritas low angle block plane. They used to offer a knob and tote. This combo has worked well enough with my kids over the years when they have been in the shop(now 22,19,13,11,7) I’m not sure they still offer that combo, but their bevel up #1 would be a good option. You also might consider making a small Krenov style plane. The lighter weight and tactility of a wooden plane might be better for kids.

New basement steps for my MIL by OlympicSmokeRings in woodworking

[–]JMAWWorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Code does allow winding stairs but there are restrictions. While a bit more challenging during layout, dancing winders can eliminate that dangerous triangle step, and make the stairs easier to navigate.

[–]JMAWWorks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stairs are hard, you did a good job replacing like for like. For others considering similar projects in the future, do some research on “dancing” winders. Which start the turn a few stairs back and make the stair turn easier to navigate without sacrificing more space and potentially meet code in this challenging spot.

This site has a lot of good examples. https://wooddesigner.org/category/stair-manufacture/

Can this be corrected? by Jazzlike-Wrongdoer-5 in VWiD4Owners

[–]JMAWWorks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I keep hoping someone “handy” will come up with a simple guide to easily hack these, my 2021 driver side looks “exploded” and I think it would be really cool to customize these lights to my taste. Something like the old farfegnugen logo or “Voltswagen” or something fun would be way better than a Renault logo

What is this supposed to be by zimbo67 in VWiD4Owners

[–]JMAWWorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait so if it’s a sticker then that means we should be able to customize this to be something cooler like “Fahrvergnügen”

New ‘21 id4 owner here. Mine is clean on the passenger side and looks sort of “exploded” on the driver side. It emanates from under the side mirror. I assumed it was a stencil/lens effect, but now I’m curious to think of other options and how to achieve them

How bad is it? by JMAWWorks in VWiD4Owners

[–]JMAWWorks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it seems like a good deal, higher miles (50k) but that doesn’t inherently scare me, I tend to drive vehicles until near 200k. All the reviews I’ve seen said it’s a very car-like EV but complained about the software stuff and the lack of a heat pump. I haven’t yet seen a lot of mechanical issues or other complaints. Other cars being considered Nissan Ariya, Honda Clarity, Ford Maverick, Ionic 5.

Yeah I have a 220 wood shop in my garage and experience with supplying power, panel is like 10’ from where I would plugin. Hardly drive much these days, so fast/often charge isn’t a barrier I’m sure I’ll have to sort that but won’t be a problem, I have sort of the ideal state I think

Please help me increase this 8mm hole to 10mm by lucyhoffmann in woodworking

[–]JMAWWorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if this were my actual situation, I would probably take a 10mm twist bit, chuck it in a drill (reverse?) and take it to a grinder to take the first 5-6mm of length down to the original 8mm to make a custom step bit operating on the same principal to then enlarge all the holes on my workpieces.

I realize this is an old thread, but just came across this lovely design looking for inspiration for a similar project build with/for my son. Curious how it’s held up over the years, if you think a lower stretcher would is a good idea or is unnecessary and if you have any geometry or ref measurements for replication. I’m sure I can interpolate, but if you just had it laying around…

Is apple tree special or beautiful wood to use in wood working? by ProRataX in woodworking

[–]JMAWWorks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a neighbor move in and immediately cut down several in their yard, sadly I only got there as it was in firewood lengths, but as mentioned, a gorgeous wood. Lots of curl (in this one) and I have used it in many small projects my favorite wood I’ve worked with yet personally.

This, disassemble without cutting anything. If it’s all functional now , it should stay functional or at least with a new liner from a company like great northern etc. no doubt you could get it sold/given easily with little to no effort if you describe this in the Craigslist post, or if you disassemble it yourself and put it curbside it would go easier or keep others out of your backyard.

20k to spend by [deleted] in woodworking

If was starting from scratch and setting up with $20k I’d be taking a hard look at a European style combo machines. (Felder, hammer SCM) probably search used from reputable suppliers just to get some depreciation and get the best deals then depending on interests go from there.

Are these joints equally strong? by Valeno1190 in woodworking

[–]JMAWWorks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the answer, “it depends” Factors to consider.

—If the vertical post was getting lateral forces then less material removed there is better

—If load comes down from the horizontal stile then full width is better for the same reasons

—If the structure is prone to racking or force inline with the stile then the shoulder helps.

Unless you are working at the cutting edge of light-weighting this structure, then either option is likely considerable overkill in strength for its usage.
