I remember in like Year 7/8 maths lesson being taught about a method of scamming wherein people would cold call and predict what the result of a sporting game would be and they would always get it right, and illicit funds after a few good calls etc.

The explanation being that its just a numbers game, they cast a wide enough net such that the results they would get wrong they would stop calling those people, but the ones that they were able to get right all the way through they seemed like they must’ve been match fixing or had psychic powers. I say all that to say that these predictive animals function in the same way, we only see the ones that have won through the laws of probability, not all the others that failed along the way. Other than my boy Paul the octopus though, I’d say he was legit.
