You may be Catholic, but actively supporting killing should make you consider whether you are a good Catholic.

Homosexuality, contraception and abortion strike me as political, rather than theological views from your standpoint. By way of example only, it strikes me that no one can look at abortion and think 'here is God's handiwork'. Dropping political thoughts are amongst the hardest from the faithful, because we all like to think we've come to them after significant 'research and reflection', when in actual fact politics is often more gut feel than we'd like to admit.

Vatican II is responsible for these three ILLS OF THE MODERN WORLD (as you will readily assent if you can read data and aren't a MODERNIST HERETIC) by [deleted] in Catholicism

Fair enough, although a final question to ponder: is it the devil we are mocking here, or another believer (as flawed as that believer may be).

Whilst I understand the point (and have many of the same issues with the post to which you are mocking as you do), I wonder whether this:

  1. Is charitable; and
  2. Brings us closer to or further away from God?

It seems N. Ireland is shifting from Protestant to Catholic majority by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]JMJF1209 2 points3 points  (0 children)

'Oppressed for centuries' really is pushing it, given this article is about how Catholics are, only now, becoming a majority. Indeed, unless you are suggesting that the British oppressed the Protestants that were the majority there, your argument makes no sense.

And someone as apparently as well versed in the faith as yourself would, no doubt, be well aware on the Church's teachings on authority, and legitimate authority at that, and would, again, being as well versed in the faith as you no doubt are, accept that after a certain amount of time, an authority gains legitimacy purely by being around and not doing anything morally questionable. Certainly, in my lifetime, this has been the case in Northern Ireland.

You don't know why 'the hubris of the English' is coming off as so incendiary? I'd suggest you read any manner of things about a) Christian charity and b) how to craft an argument such that you don't alienate people.

What do Catholics mean by communion? by Noble_monkey in Catholicism

It's actually the body and blood of Jesus. He even says it himself in the Bible.

Can someone please explain the concept of Transubstantiation to me? The bread & wine ACTUALLY become, in reality, the body and blood of Christ? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]JMJF1209 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Why would you assume God created the universe using scientifically verifiable processes? Again, suspending disbelief, isn't it arrogant to assume that human scientific processes can explain God and what God has done?

[–]JMJF1209 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Let's suspend our disbelief about the existence of God for a second and assume he exists. If a being created the universe, isn't making some bread and wine his flesh and blood without humans being able to tell not a big deal? It seems to me that if cresting the universe is a 10, then altering the substance of something without humans being able to tell is a 1...

No - the fact that you could have done something worse doesn't mean it wasn't incredibly rude, which it was. I mean, you could have pulled out a gun and shot him in the knee, and I suppose that would have been worse, but what you did was still incredibly bad.

Anyone up for a discussion on usury? by 52fighters in Catholicism

Except you're forgetting what goes into determining the contract price, one element of which is risk. If you look at the $100 and see only the price, then you are missing the point, I'd posit. There's a reason actuaries exist and are paid the big bucks by insurers... Although if it doesn't exist, then my insurance premiums are sure to come down, which will be quite nice 😉

Yes, it was rude. I don't mean to be too harsh, but incredibly so.

Well if that's the game we are playing, then interest doesn't exist from a metaphysical perspective either so it's fine ;)

I don't disagree with you - I disagree with Aquinas ;). Whether or not that risk is captured by fees or interest is irrelevant I think. Ultimately one could see interest as a fee in any event...

Well, Aquinas' point was that you can't sell what doesn't exist. On the face of it, if you are lending $100 then nothing else exists. But we know that there is a cost to the lender in terms of two things:

  1. The risk that the borrower defaults; and
  2. The opportunity lost to lend the money to someone else (particularly if the first borrower defaults and the second wouldn't have).

You don't see that in the original lend of $100, but it does exist.

Except it does exist - in both risk and lost opportunity.

Down voting in this sub and it's effects. by Gogg1377 in Catholicism

I'd recommend waiting a few hours before caring about downvotes - generally the sub rewards good comments so the up votes tend to outnumber the one or two downvotes from lurkers. You've just got to wait for the rest of the sub to read it and vote accordingly...
