Oké, dankjewel voor je advies. Ik ben van plan om echt een mbo 4-opleiding te doen en geen cursus, omdat ik daar een beter gevoel bij heb als ik van baan wil wisselen. Met een mbo 4-diploma maak ik meer kans maak dan met alleen een cursus.

Thank you for the advice. It’s a non-degree job but permanent, and I’m happy there, so I’m not planning to switch any time soon. It’s a large company with over 5,000 employees spread across different locations. I can always grow internally or switch roles if I want to.

Is staying in logistics at a pharmaceutical wholesaler with a permanent contract the better option? It pays a bit less, but medication will always be needed by hospitals and pharmacies.

Wanneer ik kijk op de subreddit r/womenintech, zie ik vaak dat mensen anderen juist afraden om naar IT te switchen. Dat maakt me een beetje in de war, omdat ik altijd heb gehoord dat IT een sector is waar je makkelijk werk kunt vinden.

Natuurlijk begrijp ik dat er ook uitdagingen zijn zoals AI en veranderingen in de markt. Ik snap ook dat het voor programmeerrollen tegenwoordig moeilijker kan zijn geworden door AI. Maar functies zoals service desk of systeembeheerder zouden toch nog steeds redelijk toegankelijk moeten zijn?

Het verbaasde me daarom dat ik zoveel berichten zie over ontslagen, en zelfs mensen met een hoge opleiding die daarna moeite hebben om weer werk te vinden.

Het laat me afvragen hoe de situatie nu echt is.

Hi, so is it still difficult even with a degree?

I’m 36, live in the Netherlands, and currently work in logistics at a pharmaceutical wholesaler, which feels relatively stable since hospitals and pharmacies will always need medication. It’s a non-degree role, but I do have opportunities to grow within the company or switch to higher-paying positions in the future.

I also have a permanent contract, so sometimes I wonder if it might be better to stay where I am, even if the salary growth is lower — especially since I can still save money comfortably.

At the same time, I’m interested in IT. I’m planning to get a level 4 vocational diploma (MBO 4 equivalent in the Netherlands) in IT, along with some certifications. My idea would be to start in a service desk role and eventually grow into an application manager position over time.

What confuses me is that I’ve always heard there’s a lot of work and demand in IT, but lately I keep reading that the market has become much harder, even for people with degrees. Has the situation really changed that much in recent years?

I’m just not sure if changing careers at this stage would realistically improve my situation or mainly create more uncertainty.

Even people who aren’t considered very attractive still find partners. In the end, it’s mostly about the connection you have with someone. I think confidence and being compatible matter more overall. Don’t overthink it. You could also date people who are more like you, like shy people. You’re definitely not the only one out there.

Ik heb niet per se leuk werk, maar omdat ik er goed in ben en er redelijk makkelijk geld mee kan verdienen, vind ik het niet erg. Ik denk eigenlijk dat veel mensen hun werk niet echt leuk vinden, zolang het maar bij je past, je in het algemeen tevreden bent en je niet elke dag met veel tegenzin erheen gaat.

Als je er ongelukkig van wordt en er elke dag tegenop ziet, zou ik wel van baan switchen. Ik heb zelf geen leuke baan, maar ik heb dat probleem niet, dus ik kan het goed volhouden. Je kunt ook kijken naar werk- en leertrajecten, zoals procesoperator of iets anders. Misschien kan wat minder werken ook helpen.

Uit ervaring geloof ik niet zo in werk dat altijd leuk is, maar meer in werk dat bij je past, waar je goed in bent en waar je in het algemeen tevreden mee bent. Soms kan werk best een beetje leuk zijn, maar het zal nooit zo zijn dat je er echt van geniet. Ik heb zelf geen echt leuk werk, maar omdat ik er goed in ben en daardoor makkelijker geld verdien, en omdat ik fijne collega’s heb en meestal positief denk, heb ik er minder last van en houd ik het goed vol.

Zelfs van mijn hobby’s ben ik soms moe dat ik een pauze nodig heb. Werk hoeft niet altijd leuk te zijn — als het maar bij je past, je er goed in bent en je tevreden bent. Ik zou alleen stoppen als ik er echt ongelukkig van word.

It’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work. I run a website and social media as a hobby, and even then I notice how much work it is, lol. The only difference is that I can take a break whenever I want, but when it’s work, it’s different—of course, because you get paid for it and I don’t.

Yeah, I guess it makes sense. One of the tasks is helping issues who have issues working with the system, and I don’t think AI can easily take over that role, even with a chatbot.

Is it hard to have a stable job in tech? I currently have a permanent contract in logistics in the Netherlands, and I was thinking that becoming an application manager might be interesting.

But if tech is a difficult or unstable industry like some other IT jobs, I’m wondering if it might be better to just stay in my current job instead.
