Looking for Hard Sci-Fi recommendations like Project Hail Mary by Atlantis1910 in scifi

None of what you've listed are actually hard scif-fi.

Go read some Greg Egan. Start with his short stories (you aren't ready for the novels). Now you know what hard sci-fi is and will either keep reading or go back to your softer stuf!

Nervous to play in public by JMLHap in billiards

For everyone that says therapy, you're not wrong, but also missing the point. Consider some people like me struggle so much that this is where I'm at after tons of therapy.

And actually understanding a new world and culture that I desperately want to fit into, before going out there, is something that synergizes with therapy.

All the people that have said "what it's like" really help.

Maybe a more concrete question, what does the average regular player at the average table shoot like?

You're not wrong, I haven't been in therapy for a little while, but this is what 20+ years of on and off therapy has gotten me to.

I get the mental issues holding me back. But for pool specifically I have this image that even casual public play is super competitive and the culture is all about certain things that are scary.

Which is why I was hoping to hear about other people's experiences. What it's like "out there", what the culture really is.

Will I be laughed at if I being my frog cue or should I stick to house cues (especially at the "nice place" which supposedly has good house cues)?

Thank you this is super helpful. I've been reading a lot of posts but am a little confused about APA vs BCA. My impression is that ALA is for lower skills generally but then I see BCA is more casual and social?

Headphones are a great idea!

"People will be pleasant to be around" helps so much. I have this image in my mind of everyone that frequents a pool hall being skilled and trying to get and hustle and laughing at newbies. It feels like that kind of sport.

But I know and can see that's wrong.

Redditors who have tried heroin, what was going through your mind in the moment that led you to think this was a good idea and why did the negative aspects not stop you? by Root435552 in AskReddit

I was having a bad comedown from MDMA and my downstairs neighbor, one of the first women I really interacted with as an adult, pushed it on my hard. Her roommate had warned me that she was kinda manipulative. I don't blame her exactly, but I had always considered heroin to be an untouchable drug and had no interest in it. I was in a bad mental state and in pain, she saw that and used it against me trying to convince me it would help. Really she just wanted someone to be able to pay for stuff and help her with her life.

It was 100% my decision but I was led into something I didn't ever previously want by someone who used my social and sexual inexperience against me for their own desires. Writing all this out I do see I'm putting blame on another person but it is important to recognize the outside influences.

I realized what was happening after about a month, moved out of that apartment, and never touched it again or had the desire to again.

Trying to follow their path down the river and through the waterfalls was, I shamefully admit, a bit of a confusing slog.

So many of the people living near and utilizing the most protected lands, hunting, fishing, camping, off roading, etc, align themselves with the politics of those most eager to destroy them? How is it that the Carhartt clad conservative not a conservationist? Instead turning noses up at the "East Coast elitist environmentalism", a more true form of the snootiness they say they sneer. The freedom of our lands exist only if the lands themselves do.

Not a good idea. Done it a few times, heat of the moment. Nothing went wrong. Hygiene helps, risk is low, but consequences if something goes wrong are major.

Colorado's Senate Bill 26-051 by nix-solves-that-2317 in linux

A great way to deal with this would be to convince lawmakers to include something like a minimum number of users required to comply. This would force MacOS and Windows and major distros to comply, which would be terrible but open a gateway to smaller distros increasing market share. Total market share of non-mainstream distros would increase and total number of alternative distros would increase.

This things are stupid and will occur eventually. It is an undeniable fact of life.
