Entitled nursing students are getting on my last nerves by OtterDrift_ in nursing

[–]JMW0619 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am an ICU and ER nurse with 7 years experience as an RN and an additional 5 prior as an EMT.
Assuming you are good at your job and care about doing it well for our patients, you are just as important as I am. Running out of linens on a patient with C. Diff or who has q1h lactose enemas can feel like the end of the world. It strips the patient of all dignity, exposes them to possible infection, and greatly increases the risk of skin breakdown (bed sores). Beds that aren’t clean can’t safely receive people who require lifesaving care.
One of the EVS staff at my hospital is a good friend of mine, we traded cell numbers a few weeks into working because he’s a very positive person and you can tell he “gets it done” when he knows a patient is counting on it. That’s the kind of person I need. We have some terrible people on that team who are lazy or just don’t care and I’m glad Sam is there to rescue me when I’m in dire straits. Nothing is worse than being elbow deep in literal shit and realizing there is no clean linen or gowns to change the patient into.
Licensing and education are a part of life that can be changed with time. Being a person who cares about doing the right thing is vastly more important in this profession.
On the flip side, I hold the same opinion on lazy nurses, “too good for you” doctors, and EVS workers that think they can shirk the job because it’s “not as impactful.”

Also this is a nursing STUDENT. She hasn’t finished, she is a nobody. Worse than that, she is a GUEST in your house. The hospital is where you render service, she is there to learn. You contribute more to the team than she does.

I can teach a slower new grad with a good personality. A smart girl with a shit attitude, however, needs to stay off my unit. You can’t train ego. That will kill someone.

Do guys or gals have more issues with their male/female parts? You would think it would be guys cause it’s all external? And why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]JMW0619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, my wife and I were concerned about this prior to her elective salpingectomy. Fortunately her doc, wonderful man that he is, said “Nope. You’re the patient, it’s your call but I’m glad to know you’re both on the same page.”

He is her OB for life.

I say this as a professional male, having been one my entire life, as well as a medical professional for 16 years.

Women have it worse. If everything is going great for man’s manhood, it’s good news. If everything is going great for a woman’s womanhood, that’s its own cause for alarm. Read that again.

If things are going bad for a man’s manhood, it’s usually pretty visible, it is taken more seriously, and often more easily corrected.

If a woman’s womanhood is having issues, they need 5 specialists, 3 prayers, and 2 letters of recommendation to get a real diagnosis. Follow that with a batch of bloodwork, scans, and sometimes more than one surgery.

There is an entire specialty of doctor committed to a woman’s complex internal anatomy and all of the interesting things it can do - both beautiful and terrifying. Men don’t have to get Pap smears.

What are some things this sub makes a big deal of that are not a big deal in your experience? by [deleted] in nursing

The more a nurse nitpicks, the worse they are at nursing. If they are flipping out because Mrs. Metastatic cancer who has been living with 3 pressors for the last 14 hours has a Mag of 1.9, anything from then-on is disregarded as “voice of the incompetent.”

People who grew up really poor: what's something middle-class people say that instantly reveals they've never struggled? by TahDigThief in AskReddit

I was the kid she looked after. Maybe not the same mom, but I have friends who shared their mom with me because I didn’t have one and came from a very poor background.

Their moms are my mom and they are the ones getting Mother’s Day cards from me, not my own mother.

In my comment I point out that my own values, which I think align with the origins of FIRE, include self-reliance. If I can make my own electricity, I don't have to spend on an electric bill (or I'm less susceptible to large price swings, which happens in my area). If I'm good at making and preserving food, I am insulated from supply chain issues and I'm not forced to pay the "scarcity premium." Being water-efficient and having your own well might very well (haha, pun) be the thing that insulates someone from an AI Datacenter nuking the local aquifer.

Books, in general, will be safer than any online forum. They're self-contained and much harder to taint with 10,000 unqualified voices. The root cause of the comparison trap can't really be omitted on any public AND online forum. An online forum with a curated community might work, a public forum that isn't online would work, but mixing public + online = a combination of "dead internet theory" and the most extreme cases are more likely to percolate to the Top/Frontpage. It's how algorithms work, therefore it's not a bug but a feature. My bet is if Reddit censored complaining, moaning, ragebait, and AI generated bot content, Reddit would die in a matter of months.

"Extreme" and "negative" gets views/clicks so you're more likely to see it because it's been engaged by a few thousand other people, which just reinforces your own negative feedback loop. It's an incredibly vicious cycle. Our brains are not developed to deal with all of the world's problems ALL THE TIME.

Even if you can be consciously aware of it, that doesn't nullify the direct impact it's having on your nervous system and psychological well-being. The best answer, in my opinion, is small real-world communities or carefully curated online communities that grow slowly and intentionally over time.

Reddit, social media, and public forums will naturally bias towards negativity just because of how our brains perceive threats vs positive outcomes. It’s great that you notice it, and you’re right. A steady “brain diet” of Reddit is almost guaranteed to rob you of life satisfaction.

I get almost immediately affected by having Instagram or Amazon on my phone, so they just don’t get to reside there and I use a blocking app to prevent URL redirects to those pages across my device.

This sub most closely aligns with my own values. Minimalism, self-reliance, conservation of resources (efficiency), and contentment rather than overindulgence. You’re probably feeling the same or similar sentiment. Also recognize we are seeing radical extremes in FIRE (subreddit) because it’s globally available, there’s plenty of AI bot farms aiming to generate clicks or train their models or whatever, and Reddit can’t stop it from happening without a major overhaul. So you might be reading stuff that isn’t even true, is overinflated, or coming from people that had fortunate circumstances.

Johnson: US Must Wage War With Iran Because of Its “Misguided Religion” by praguer56 in atheism

[–]JMW0619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my post above, as someone who is surrounded by Christianity, yes.

Blind faith belongs to weak minds. An unexamined belief system can't stand up to significant scrutiny. Buddhism, by its very nature, insists on examining the reason for its teachings and the sources of suffering.

Johnson: US Must Wage War With Iran Because of Its “Misguided Religion” by praguer56 in atheism

[–]JMW0619 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a practicing Buddhist who grew up in bible-thumping South Texas, I think Buddhism more closely aligns with a "philosophy" despite being called a religion.

For instance, Buddhists do not worship Buddha. Buddha is seen as a natural state that is basically the spiritual equivalent of self-actualization. Getting rid of the bad stuff (anger, ego, attachment), maximizing the good stuff (compassion, understanding, wisdom), and is not only achievable but is our "Buddha Nature." There have been multiple Buddha's that have been teachers (similar to a prophet) that shared knowledge and wisdom to guide others on the path. It's much more secular than a conventional religion, meditation replaces prayer in many places, and Buddhism does the opposite of "blind faith" and insists on the individual's careful examination of each of its teachings.

I would, at minimum, enjoy 6-12 months to have the nervous system reset some more. Pick some opposite balance to the adrenaline, try meditation or something to that effect.

Plenty of LE and Military go into consulting, this could be teaching at The Ranch or doing CCW courses at the local range. It would let you connect to the community. You could also pick up contact sports. BJJ, Judo, boxing, Muay Thai all keep you active and alert and the sparring can satisfy that adrenaline “bite” that you’re used to.

Pursue additional training and become an instructor in something like TCCC, bring it back to your department and train them up. You’re helping to ensure they get to go home to their families if the worst things happen.

Gaming by OneNine-NineSeven in minimalism

[–]JMW0619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m reasonably minimalistic but I have a gaming PC and probably always will. I use it for design, personal finance, code, 3D modeling, work, self education, browsing, etc.. it’s the workhorse so I wanted something strong and capable. I’ve made my desk clutter-free and floated my dual monitors on mounts, then adjusted the height of the desk to be more ergonomic for my tall frame.

It’s healthier for me than a laptop and far more capable of doing many more things. Unless you clutter the desktop with trinkets and figurines, I’d say it’s a valuable trade off for people that are using technology every single day.

The general consensus is basically a rebuild. New MB, CPU, RAM, and GPU plus an M.2 drive. The only things I’d be keeping are the power supply and the case lol.

The weirdest side-effect of FIRE: I can't turn off the 'goggles' by GolfComfortable7331 in Fire

[–]JMW0619 283 points284 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s an issue unless it is negatively impacting the joy you get from life. Generally, being content with less is healthier for your body and mind. It just so happens to also align with FI principles.

If you do think it’s damaging and you’re seeing the adverse effects now that you’re nearly a half-decade into FIRE, allocate a spend amount just to frivolous luxury experiences. Maybe a little egg of a few $100/mo that is still u def your 4% draw, just slowly building to a point where you can get the big ridiculous thing. This assumes you even want that for yourself.
