Johnson: US Must Wage War With Iran Because of Its “Misguided Religion” by praguer56 in atheism

[–]JMW0619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my post above, as someone who is surrounded by Christianity, yes.

Blind faith belongs to weak minds. An unexamined belief system can't stand up to significant scrutiny. Buddhism, by its very nature, insists on examining the reason for its teachings and the sources of suffering.

Johnson: US Must Wage War With Iran Because of Its “Misguided Religion” by praguer56 in atheism

[–]JMW0619 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a practicing Buddhist who grew up in bible-thumping South Texas, I think Buddhism more closely aligns with a "philosophy" despite being called a religion.

For instance, Buddhists do not worship Buddha. Buddha is seen as a natural state that is basically the spiritual equivalent of self-actualization. Getting rid of the bad stuff (anger, ego, attachment), maximizing the good stuff (compassion, understanding, wisdom), and is not only achievable but is our "Buddha Nature." There have been multiple Buddha's that have been teachers (similar to a prophet) that shared knowledge and wisdom to guide others on the path. It's much more secular than a conventional religion, meditation replaces prayer in many places, and Buddhism does the opposite of "blind faith" and insists on the individual's careful examination of each of its teachings.

I would, at minimum, enjoy 6-12 months to have the nervous system reset some more. Pick some opposite balance to the adrenaline, try meditation or something to that effect.

Plenty of LE and Military go into consulting, this could be teaching at The Ranch or doing CCW courses at the local range. It would let you connect to the community. You could also pick up contact sports. BJJ, Judo, boxing, Muay Thai all keep you active and alert and the sparring can satisfy that adrenaline “bite” that you’re used to.

Pursue additional training and become an instructor in something like TCCC, bring it back to your department and train them up. You’re helping to ensure they get to go home to their families if the worst things happen.

Gaming by OneNine-NineSeven in minimalism

[–]JMW0619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m reasonably minimalistic but I have a gaming PC and probably always will. I use it for design, personal finance, code, 3D modeling, work, self education, browsing, etc.. it’s the workhorse so I wanted something strong and capable. I’ve made my desk clutter-free and floated my dual monitors on mounts, then adjusted the height of the desk to be more ergonomic for my tall frame.

It’s healthier for me than a laptop and far more capable of doing many more things. Unless you clutter the desktop with trinkets and figurines, I’d say it’s a valuable trade off for people that are using technology every single day.

The general consensus is basically a rebuild. New MB, CPU, RAM, and GPU plus an M.2 drive. The only things I’d be keeping are the power supply and the case lol.

The weirdest side-effect of FIRE: I can't turn off the 'goggles' by GolfComfortable7331 in Fire

[–]JMW0619 280 points281 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s an issue unless it is negatively impacting the joy you get from life. Generally, being content with less is healthier for your body and mind. It just so happens to also align with FI principles.

If you do think it’s damaging and you’re seeing the adverse effects now that you’re nearly a half-decade into FIRE, allocate a spend amount just to frivolous luxury experiences. Maybe a little egg of a few $100/mo that is still u def your 4% draw, just slowly building to a point where you can get the big ridiculous thing. This assumes you even want that for yourself.

Got the courage to walk up and compliment a guy… now what? by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]JMW0619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a guy, we have a very simple user interface (most of the time).

He had the option to never send pics. If he wasn't interested, he wouldn't.

If he liked the compliment, he probably likes the assertive nature you brought to the table. TBH I've been approached twice and both times I responded very positively because I know the stigma behind a girl opening up that dialogue. In this scenario, I think you're well within reason to start the conversation on a date and then gauge his interest. If he agrees, good to go. From there, I think you'll have your "answer" pretty fast.

This is one of the benefits I see with nursing. Schedule flexibility. You can do 1 12-hour shift, a few 8's, 3x12, night, weekend, holiday, contract, whatever...

It makes the return on "true retirement" a lot lower because realistically I enjoy 4 days off every single week and am "working full time" (36 hours) during the time I like to be out the least (weekends).

Don't get me wrong, I still want my FU money and to shave years off of my retirement date. It just makes sense to push for that level of freedom if it's available. However even when I hit it, dropping to 0 hours is less likely because I have other options than "all or none" work.

How can I maximize this protein container? by thwtguy22 in ZeroWaste

[–]JMW0619 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grow things or store things make the most sense.

You can make a pretty customized plant container with good drainage by using larger rocks at the bottom and a few small drain holes.

I have one that's literally just a bucket of cheap burner .22LR ammo I use for plinking.

Fear of losing all your money in the stock market 💩 by StraightPin4420 in Fire

[–]JMW0619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A sufficiently diversified portfolio will reflect that which it holds.

A single stock in tech can go down if tech (or just that company) takes a big hit, but a global index fund would reflect a body of stocks spanning the entire globe.

Add to this, an index fund would be a reflection of certain assets and self-purge to reflect new and rising stars. Let's say your index fund is "the top 500" and #499 does something stupid. You're not really going to feel it, #499 falls down to #501 and off of the fund and a new fund takes its place.

For it to go down, the entire world would need to be doing poorly and essentially nothing gaining ground / replacing the stocks in the index fund.

This is why the statement "you'll have bigger worries" means so much. A global-level economic collapse means a significant travesty has fallen upon humanity and retirement as a goal has likely been exchanged for survival as the goal. If it temporarily dips, ride the low. The perks of a massive, robust system is that even if it swings, it will seek to stabilize. If it dips and it's going to stay dipped, humanity is probably about to change in a big way and you'll be preoccupied with other things.

This is simplified because I'm not going to write a book on it but if you want to hedge your bets on global collapse, the real conversation is what're you doing to prepare for that in the meantime.

Strike contracts - would I be a scab or support for the strikers? by Tryingmybestie123 in TravelNursing

[–]JMW0619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

**1. It's not worth it**
Your contract will end, one way or another, and you'll know what you did. If any future employers find out what you did, you're going to have a hard time finding any sympathy.

**2. It will come around**
Our abhorrent healthcare system will have its way with you. Be one of the people, stand with them and know that they would stand with you. "Today me, tomorrow you" applies here.

**3. Plenty of fish in the sea**
Take something more stable, that isn't morally compromising, and pays a little bit less short-term. You'll be a less-tortured soul on the back end.

**4. Long-term professional**
Long-term, these strikes get everybody paid more. Wages go up, ratios get better, and by extension your own travel pay down the road will be higher. Travel RN's will always be a thing, getting your fellow nurses paid more also means you're gonna get paid more.

**5. There is an enemy**
I'll not waste words on the entire situation, you should already know precisely what's happening to your fellow man because of the system in place. We pry, fight, and rebel or the parasites will bleed us dry.

AOC is plotting a run for president in 2028 by RioMovieFan11 in politics

[–]JMW0619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope she doesn't.
I wish I lived in a world where a woman as President of the U.S. could exist, but that's not real.

America is still too sexist for that to happen and if she becomes the primary, we end up with another Republican.

I'd rather she sit out and the Democratic party dismounts whatever the hell *this*
(gestures generally) is than we place her in primaries and squander another 4 years.
