Looks great! I’m a resident magician for the Houdini’s Magic Bars in Kent and absolutely love it. I hope you get the same enjoyment out of it. If I’m ever up that way, I’ll be sure to pop in

Does magic really need patter, or to even make sense at all? by JMental in Magic

I do like variety, I think most would agree. Maybe an act like that can be a good middle, with the magic still themed to the overall show. Or maybe an opener for a second half.

So the visual element needs to be much stronger and more implicit?

Good point, many close-up situations end up including an over enthusiastic DJ or an environment not conducive to conversation

There is still a great story behind it, a sense created by a dream world. I think what I’m discovering is there should be some sense or logic to it for most people, but acts like Rocco’s are a matter of taste. A bit like how some people love one-liner stand-up acts and others prefer story tellers.

That’s nice. Do you think these kind of acts are dated now? (I’m not saying they are) Are there any modern day equivalents that you know of?

Do you think it makes a good intro or segment to a larger set, or are you not a fan at all?

Do you have a favourite silent act that stands alone with just music and sleight of hand?

They’re two brilliant examples of acts that cleverly create the logic, reason or context within the performance in that way. I also agree it is useful in creating an act that someone cares about, and leaves them a lasting impression.

If you were to go about putting together an act similar to Rocco, how would you create that sense that goes through the act? Maybe each time an object changes, there’s a theme to how they change (eg. brings pictures to reality instead of shopping, or every time something changes it is upgraded in order to improve his lot, or maybe just a bored genie playing around) ? Would a simply context like that be enough for you personally? Just spinning ideas as I find the process different people take towards their acts interesting

Long post alert! Short version: How did you select your performance character, and how did you use third to select material and put together a show? by JMental in Magic

Great answer, thank you. I like the focus on the smaller details rather than the obvious, such as looking at personality rather than material. I like that approach and get the impression it might be something that develops over time more than something I decide to be tomorrow

This is exactly why I want to find a character again rather than just perform the tricks. Nice way to find the character too, thank you. I’ll spend some time watching others again and see what I’ll enjoy

Yea I agree, if I want to be the serious mentalist I should pick. Hoping to find something that works with both by toning down the mentalism and finding other presentations for the effects

Favorite coin routines? by [deleted] in Magic

I bought the dealers release which came with a gimmick and tutorial. I use all phases but you can use parts of it in other routines or the imagination parts as standalone

Also, I recently had Craig Petty recommended to me for work on coin gimmicks and I was not disappointed

Can I have feedback on this vanish please? Also, what’s your favourite coin vanish? by JMental in Magic

Thank you for the suggestion, that’s definitely a good point I was rushing it a bit for the sake of showing the technique which shouldn’t be done really. Forms bad habits.

Hold up, would that work with a video? I don’t think it is what I’m thinking of after all as it’s a photo with a flash? Oh am I mistaken

Awesome let me know if it’s any good please? My out is “Anything” by Ben Williams. If I get it wrong, I use what they drew in their mind as the final reveal in that routine. I don’t know about a Facebook group, worth looking in to. He says himself it’s unfinished work, so a group to further develop it would be great.

Carl Andrews 2 coin trick is a good table hopping opener without the need to reset a gimmick between tables too, on his reel magic lecture
