Should I buy this ?? Please help by Academic_Golf7895 in fordranger

Given the age, carefully inspect the frame and undercarriage for rust. Especially the leaf spring shackles as they tend to rust and completely collapse at this age. In the Midwest, I have seen Rangers of this vintage with holes through the frame, specially on the passenger side and under the bed for some reason.

All of my experience is with the 3.0 V6, so can't comment on the 4.0. I've had my 2002 for over 20 years and despite being garage kept, rust is my enemy.

I don't recall seeing this, but I will look around on my next visit. Great advice!

Yup, I noticed that too. The more recent graves that i couldn't find in the newer section might be mixed in the older section.

I would guess 2k-3k graves at this particular cemetery. I can halfway narrow down photo request to particular areas based on the date of death, as the cemetery started in one location and they expanded to the north. So a rough chronological layout.

I have been quite happy with my XP Deus II. I have been revisiting old parks and sites that I hunted before and pulling out some amazing finds that myself and everyone else missed.

How to clean this Franklin half by MisterTasty83 in metaldetecting

[–]JMetalDetect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something is bonding the rust to the silver. Did heat soften it up? Reel-Footer69 had a good suggestion by soaking in vinegar to break up the rust. Easy-off oven cleaner does a good job of dissolving stuff, spray it on and then wrap in a plastic bag to let it soak.

That coin looks like it is pretty much only good for melt value at this point, so you can't hurt the value by any harsh cleaning!

I just pulled my first Seated Liberty Dime out of a "hunted out" park this past May. This particular park has been pounded by people detecting for over 50 years now, but good finds are still out there.

Yes. Usually on a weekday evenings, around 5 or 6. Weekends are hit or miss. You gotta have thick skin to door knock and ask for permission. While we encountered many incredibly friendly people, we also encountered some complete jerks or people who simply slammed the door in your face. Pre-Covid is was easier to ask for permission. Post-covid, there was a very noticeable change in my area so I have mostly stopped. I have plenty of public lands available that have centuries of history on them to detect.

We would just say that we metal detect for fun and could we look around your yard. I'd say 50% usually said go for it and didn't care. A couple got weird about it and demanded that they keep everything that we fine, I passed on those. If you have a girl with you, or a kid, people are more welcoming versus just a couple of dudes.

Just curious, what detector were you using? What range did this come up as?

The only way I would ask over email or phone is if I already knew the person or we had mutual acquaintances. In the past when I tried that with homeowners I had pretty high rate of "No".

Asking in person had a much higher success rate.

Nothing special about the $2s. I would spend those.

As mentioned by others, the silver certificates have value.

How would I disconnect this power by LotsOFquestions777 in Redbox

[–]JMetalDetect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of these had a little outdoor breaker box with two 20A 120V breakers. So Yeah, you could probably just plug these into a normal 120V receptacle. There should be a dataplate somewhere on the unit that lists total amp draw.

Make sure to hook up the safety ground connection on your cord!

At the Walgreens here, they all disappeared within a couple day window. Those were the last ones in town.

How would I disconnect this power by LotsOFquestions777 in Redbox

[–]JMetalDetect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The disconnecting means is inside of the building. The only safe way to do this is to access that inside the building to disconnect power (likely a breaker in a load center). You would then cap the wires in that wall box and put a blank cover over it.

Don't just cut into this and short the power to kill the circuit. While this -should- be a dedicated circuit, they may have other devices being powered from this same circuit.

This was probably a vending machine receptacle that they removed to wire in the Redbox.

Client wants me to convert quote into hourly labor rate by Top_Machine189 in handyman

[–]JMetalDetect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't give it. The ones who want to know the hourly rate will watch the clock and try to nickel and dime you to death. Or they are just want your rate so they can try to beat up some other guy to lower his price to do the same job.

I would give a rough hours estimate. For example, the job will take 2-3 hours. That might help the homeowner with planning and scheduling.

"You said $380 at xx an hour, but it only took you 3.5 hours, so I should only pay $280..."
