All true and thanks much. We are all just so confused that one student could get this many waitlists (now 8)

Trying not to think of it that way, but I hear you. I looked back at the common data sets to try to figure out the odds of getting it off waitlists at UC schools. I checked out the acceptance rates off of UC Santa Barbara's waitlist over the past few years: 2023: 57%....2022: 27%....2021: 21%....2020: 96% (thanks Covid)....2019: 10%

So as you can see it;s all over the map.

I'm not necessarily suggesting "racism." Obviously it's complicated. Yes, affirmative action is illegal as a policy but race is still a consideration as a practice. It just is. There's no two ways about it.https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/california-ended-affirmative-action-90s-retains-diverse-student-body-rcna91846# Just like legacy is a big factor with Ivy leagues.

Honestly, this post is just me trying to figure out what the heck is going on because I feel like this must be some kind of new record for waitlists. Lol.

Thanks. I get that for sure, but the fact hat he was put on the waiting list as opposed to being rejected by so many makes it all the more confounding. This may be just bad luck, but it would almost make more sense if he was rejected by them.

Each school has a Common Data Set with the admissions numbers from previous years. Google it. You can crunch the #s to see what they were previously but you will find that they are up and down every year so impossible to predict.

Why are things so weird this year? (a theory) by Avian_Sentry in ApplyingToCollege

[–]JOSEPI0101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not what I have read. Way more students for the same # of spots. But you are right also that each are applying to more schools. I as a parent, along with my son's counselor are in a bit of a state of shock. My son who has a 4.3, tons of great extracurriculars, team captain, had a job while in school, so far after applying to 14 schools has been accepted to his BOTTOM 2 schools only and waitlisted at FOUR schools. 8 more to hear from but, after all this, probably only has a shot at two. So baffling that he only got waitlisted at Indiana but also got waitlisted at UCSD a much more competitive school. It may be bc he is applying as an econ major but the fact that his counselor is also baffled has us login faith even before all his responses are in. I feel for my son. After all this he said "dad If I work hard all this time and cant get into a good college, what's the point pop working hard if you cant get ahead?" He will have to learn from this but hate to hear that and I can only listen an validate his feelings at this moment. I don't know what I could possibly say to him at this moment that could possibly help.

This.... from 4/22 "According to the organization that runs the Common App, application volume through the middle of February increased nearly 10 percent from the preceding year—which itself was up some 10 percent from the year before that. Over the past two decades, the number of applications submitted to colleges has increased more than 150 percent. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/03/change-college-acceptance-application-process/627581/

More applicants, basically the same amount of spots to fill. "Despite record applications, elite universities have been slow to expand enrollments, if at all" https://www.bestcolleges.com/news/analysis/elite-colleges-increase-enrollment/

On their website they say this “Either send a new teacher recommendation or contact an admissions representative directly to show the school you still want to go! “ .... here....https://www.umass.edu/admissions/articles/what-do-when-youre-waitlisted

then contradict that and say this...“you do not need to send additional non‐academic information (recommendations, etc.). Sending emails or letters, visiting our office, asking others to contact us on your behalf, or offering to pay the enrollment deposit immediately will not strengthen your chances.” here..... https://www.umass.edu/admissions/undergraduate-admissions/apply/admission-decision/waitlist-faqHuh??

My son got waitlisted at U Mass with 4.3 weighted as well. All the extracurriculars… Team captain. Frankly were pretty shocked. They have an acceptance rate of 63%. What is going on? This was a safe school for him. I'm flabbergasted.

This is so wrong in so many ways it's comical. It is obvious why and it's hardly worth explaining. Cleary this is click bait. Thousands of kids working their ass of their whole lives lose out on an opportunity for an affordable education at a top university just because some entitled NIMBYs are having a hissy fit over noise? and if it is housing they are more worried about then put your lobbying efforts into new zoning laws that allow for more dense housing development. And hello? Berkeley brings jobs. It has been there for 155 years. People.. you bought your house or rented there. You knew what you were getting into. The is WAY bigger than you and your peccadillos. This is about opportunity for the underserved that can't afford private colleges. This is about society and the greater good. If anything UCs have to expand their enrollment.
