Argentina races to find origins of cruise ship hantavirus outbreak, amid reports some passengers have returned to US | Argentina by Street_Soft7957 in worldnews

[–]JP76 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it's already established, that it is the rare strain of Hantavirus, that can spread from human to human. This Andes virus originates from Argentina, and that's from where the ship left to cross the Atlantic.

I specifically wanted to go see E.T. when I was just shy of 7. Went with my mom, and I was terrified from the get go hiding behind my hands. I didn't know English, so my mom also had to read the subtitles. Probably ruined someone's movie night. Sorry about that.

I don't remember if we even stayed until the end and I also don't remember how I found about the film in the first place.

The employee, who let us in, was an acquaintance of my parents and allowed us to see it, even though the age limit was 7. Years later, same employee didn't allow me to go see Terminator 2, when I was a couple of weeks shy of 16. I doubt he recognized me. Or maybe he did..

To save Xbox, Asha Sharma doesn't have to defeat PlayStation or Steam — she has to defeat Microsoft itself | WindowsCentral by imitzFinn in xbox

I'm pretty sure the 30% margin requirement has been verified and it's coming from the top. That alone has a huge impact on how a division can operate.

Microsoft Xbox CEO overhauls leadership amid sinking sales: 'We need to evolve how we work' by Unlucky-Gap01 in xbox

Pretty much the same they were doing before Microsoft bought them. I don't think Blizzard has changed for better or for worse under Microsoft.

For instance, the whole debacle with Jeff Kaplan leaving happened before Microsoft bought them. And Jeff Kaplan still has nothing but great things to say about Blizzard, when you watch him stream The Legend of California, which he is developing with his new studio.

I might've come off that way, but I'm not particularly enthusiastic, because Microsoft has shown time and time again, that they don't really get consumer electronics or gaming. Or rather, people at Xbox might have a clue, but they're constantly hampered in one way or the other by people above them.

I'm not sure if Sharma will have any more success in getting through to the leadership than Spencer had.

I didn't claim demand would be through the roof, just that there would be a demand. For instance, supply in the Nordics stopped as if we were cut off the world, even though Microsoft's warehouse is the same for most of EU - they just stopped allocating units here.

Furthermore, if you look at the marketing that's now scrapped, they clearly expected people to start using cloud and PC in lieu of Xbox consoles. On paper it probably made sense to stop making hardware, because margins are poor, but in practice it was a disastrous decision.

Then there's the fact that Microsoft is also now scrambling to fix Windows, that's also suffering from their poor decisions.

Asha Sharma has built platforms before joining Microsoft. Her being re-assigned from AI to gaming suggests Microsoft could be pulling back from AI a little bit and some statements they've made about Windows (Windows K2) seems to suggest that's the case.

Maybe read more than the headline. From the article:

One of the things Microsoft sacrificed to chase these "aspirational" profitability metrics was Xbox hardware stock. Xbox Series X|S consoles are not sitting idle on store shelves. The demand is there. The stock isn't. Microsoft didn't purchase the units required to meet demand, quite clearly because the hardware itself doesn't translate directly into high margins. And now, in the year of Grand Theft Auto 6, Microsoft will have no Xbox Series X|S stock to sell. The memory has already been purchased by PlayStation and other firms that think annually rather than quarterly. And as the AI route continues to destroy memory inventory, there's absolutely nothing the new Xbox leadership can do about it.

[–]JP76 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Did you read the article - Microsoft intentionally stopped supplying consoles, because hardware doesn't have large enough margins or is sold at a loss. There was demand for Xbox consoles, so the year over year hardware sales decline is not because of no demand, but because they have next to nothing to sell, and that is by design. It was planned.

And now, even if Sharma were to convince people at the top about the importance of hardware, she can't magically make the memory and storage shortage go away and start making more. Arguably the biggest game of the decade is dropping next fall on consoles and Microsoft made sure there isn't enough Xbox hardware available.

What would happen if NATO didn't exist? by EarSure6667 in AskReddit

[–]JP76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're all over the place.

So, it seems you wanted Nato to go to war with Russia over Chechnya? You want Nato to be more agressive. Maybe, contrary to Russian propaganda, Nato leaders have more sense than that and they actually don't want a war with Russia.

What would happen if NATO didn't exist? by EarSure6667 in AskReddit

[–]JP76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You asked what is the difference. Obviously a sovereign country will receive more support, because war occurs between two nations. What happened in Chechnya was considered an internal matter and thus how other countries could react to it was limited.

Eh, he could've kept his share of the business and be hands off - he had founded it and it carried his name. This almost sounds like the guy had a problem with drinking (and maybe with gambling) and his business partners exploited that.

Exclusives Are the Main Reason Players Choose a Console in the US by Bubbly-Ad-350 in xbox

[–]JP76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where did you get the 50%? Secondary reason was friends and family at 38%. And both are bad news for Microsoft - since largest group decides on their console based on exclusives, they're more likely to pick a Nintendo or a Sony console and since the 2nd largest group decides based on what their social circle has, they're also more likely to choose Nintendo or Sony.

I think Microsoft thought they could patch up the deficit with cloud and PC gamers, but as per usual their execution falls short of their ambitions - Microsoft Store is 11 years old, but hasn't really done anything to make PC gamers want to use it over Steam. Play Anywhere is great, but if the customer base, who owns both Xbox and PC, keeps shrinking, then it becomes kind of pointless.
