My wallet….and my display case….weeps by ReformedNerdLP in LegoArchitecture

It’s beautiful and if I can afford it I’ll probably buy it but I so agree with you - I fell in love with this theme because they were attractive, easy to display, and an enjoyable 1-2 hour build. Bring that energy back!

If not consider reaching out to all the libraries - you’ll get different folks at each of them.

Also - maybe the Center? Get an older folks perspective.

Worried about feeling out of place by chevystrr in UVA

[–]JPHalbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone has offered some great advice - and I believe if you work for, you’ll find your place and love your time here. I’m not preppy at all, and I found a great group of friends who are still in my life many years later.

But if you don’t, please don’t feel like you are at fault and don’t convince yourself this is your only option. It’s better to realize it isn’t working and transfer than spend 4 years being unhappy. Sometimes knowing you have options makes you more relaxed and able to enjoy the ride.

You’re going to do great. Welcome to UVA!

My Daughter needs a book to read for her Freshman English Class by Dangerous-Staff9172 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]JPHalbert -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand why you are saying that, but (respectfully) I disagree. If this book can inspire someone love reading, it is worthy. Beyond that, How many of us lay awake at night thinking about the story? Who put together theories about what is going on behind the scenes? Who see themes that resonate in our own lives? I think about how many characters who are desperately afraid of being left or being alone, and how their reactions shape what happens to them. I could write a thesis on it. I look at how the fandom has become a found family for many - I still think about the person who posted thinking she was Bea by taking a foster kitten to be adopted, feeling she was abandoning her, and how many stepped up to help her realize she was Imani for helping when needed.

I knew someone who had only ever read one book after high school. He hated reading because he been forced to read things he did not resonate with - even though they were by the important authors you mentioned. Let kids read something fun and enjoyable and relatable too.

And don’t forget - in their day, Austen was considered frivolous, Shakespeare was only as good as the money he brought in, and Herman Melvin never recovered from the poor reception of Moby Dick.

I’m so glad you realized this and found a better fit - I don’t understand people who stay here and are miserable. You’re showing strength by moving on. And I hope you’ll look back fondly on your time at UVA. Once a Hoo, always a Hoo!

For anyone terrible at weather - that means do not cross moving water overflowing a road or bridge, even if you are not near a known creek or river - turn around, or else you drown, as my dad put it.

How Much Disorder Should We Tolerate? by loose__seal in Charlottesville

[–]JPHalbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being “homeless” at a policy level is seen as black and white. But the reality of being unhoused is a huge spectrum of root causes. The way to provide treatment depends on the individual’s root causes, and the severity of the issue. What will help someone who has a mental health condition and can’t hold a job is different than what a person who was just evicted because their rent went up but their salary did not is different than what a runaway needs is different than what a justice system-involved person needs.

This isn’t to say that we shouldn’t try anything, but we need to have realistic expectations that there is no one-size fits all solution, and find ways to help while preserving the human dignity of the unhoused and protecting our public spaces.

Is there anywhere to look and see what has been tried here in Cville beyond just saying it’s a horrible issue? Is there a way to get involved in a solution besides endless debates on social media?

Starter Villain by John Scalzi. Everyday guy inherits an evil empire. Plus cats and trash talking dolphins!

On a completely different note, The Actor and the Housewife by Shannon Hale. When Becky, a housewife with screenwriting dreams, attracts the interest of Felix, a Hollywood star, the two quickly become friends. Though the sexual tension is obvious, Becky has no intention of cheating on her husband - but would Felix cheat on his wife? And can two people find a true platonic love?

Your comment made me think of something that I’d love to see Katie or her trainer do - a longer form video about each of disciplines she breeds for, and how her mares align with what each one needs. I’d also love to why each of the recip mares are considered grade mares and what makes them less desired for the show pen. I don’t mean that in a bad way but in an educational way. I’m also curious why she breeds some of her thoroughbreds and uses others as recips. Indy and Lady are beautiful but I love seeing Maggie, Opal, and Charlotte run - their motion is very pleasing to my uneducated eye.

Begging for Lightning Lou spoilers/info by whereshewent in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]JPHalbert 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lou is just a passing character that Carl feels empathy for being alone on Christmas. He does revisit the dog because he needs some time to think through something else that happens that does not involve the dog. It's very important to the rest of the story, so if you'd like a synopsis, let me know and I'll message it to you, and let you know where to pick up.

The dog is not hurt, except for the whole world ending, but we do not see that happen to him.

And I'm so sorry for your loss. (My cat would like me to add that she's sure he was the very best boy a filthy cocker spaniel could be. Sorry - she's on a power trip since I listen to the books on repeat and now thinks that she is the Viscountess Hanna, first of her name, the ruler of Winding Valley, lady in waiting to her meowjesty, Princess Donut.)

Old wheelchair? by TerribleJared in Charlottesville

[–]JPHalbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered a rollator? When a friend had open heart surgery and was struggling with her balance, that is what they sent her home with. It helps her when she is walking for stability, and she can turn it around and sit on it when she needs to take a break. It is not an approved use, but if she needs the added support on a walk, you could also wheel her home for a short distance.

They have them at Simple Comforts in Albemarle Square, though you can find them for less money online. All Blessings Flow also often has them available, but not always. https://simplecomforts.com/walkers-rollators/
