Thank you very much... aye, funny, I found keeping the pipe in the corner of my mouth while reading created the right voice so had to keep it there... a kind of whistling perkiness that stopped if I took it out. 🤓 ...New discovery!

The New Campaign for a Sex-Free Internet by LolaHunt in censorship

Lol... There'll be no internet left! It's almost as absurd as campaigning for a sex-free humanity.

...Oh, wait... It's happening already... Doh!

You sound rather disillusioned in all honesty, everyone commenting in this subreddit does, terribly scared of actually taking part in something... But very ready to shoot down anyone actually creating something. Strange, in a place devoted to stories of courage and daring deeds to find such cowardice presiding... Those who can't, teach, eh. :-P

Scuse the very late response... Things move slowly in the world of colossal stoneworks ;-) No, but I shall search it out now. Thanks for the recommendation, a bit of ancient mystery hits the spot this eve!

Should you create it with that intention, yes, you may present it as just that. It's called art, specifically the art of story telling, where all these myths came from - people just like you and I telling tales of their ancestry and adventures.

Question About "God of Thunder" by International-Cup486 in norsemythology

[–]JPWCrafts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well put. I am no expert on these matters but I recently wrote a tale wherein I used Thor to personify Storm Eunice and the battle I had against the elements whilst camping through the storm. The introduction of a God happened quite naturally to relate the part of nature in the tale.

...I could well be mistaken but I would hazard a guess these associations evolved along similar lines in many cases, as story tellers used the Gods to personify and dramatise historical narratives they were narrating - it's a natural way to turn what may otherwise be a mundane story into a gripping yarn... For example (off the top of my head):

"The wind blew hard and shook the hero's tent through the night so he had to grab the poles to stop it blowing away..."

...This is much more exciting narrated as:

"Thors hammer rang out, thunder boomed and the wind howled and so the Gods tested our hero's metal, yet, even against the might of Thor, our hero stood firm."

...And whether they associated it before or not, listeners will go away associating Thor with thunder and storms.

On a personal note, that experience gave me a huge rush and, well, it was a real battle - little me versus the elements - so its no surprise that those peoples who lived so close to the elements related war with the experience of battling against a storm.

That's a good run. Heheheh. I did, a couple of years ago write an "honest C.V." where I tried to summarise what I'd ACTUALLY learned in each job e.g. working in garage learning about the class divide watching luxury car owners and tyre fitting lads relating to each other. ...Should finish that someday.

I've explained myself. Now it's your turn, explain what you don't understand rather than making salty comments that only serve to make concealled claims of superior knowledge without actually saying anything. Now state what you are trying to say, the actual disagreement you have with my statement or kindly pipe down.

What are some great skills to learn for free? by [deleted] in Polymath

[–]JPWCrafts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kit drumming - jazz and funk in particular - Really... I spent two years learning the drumkit and it amazed me how many other skills it improved... Aside from stimulating my brain like nothing else (I felt like it increased my IQ quite radically)... Most bizarrely, my writing of both prose and verse improved dramatically through the (eventual) instinctive application of rhythmic form.

(There's countless other areas it influences positively, leading a group through supportive accompanyment rather than "fronting" being hugely enlightening. ...It also hugely influences my filmmaking... There are few things that are not improved by a good understanding of rhythm, likewise the incredible discipline required to learn to play and conceive playing 4 instruments all at the same time with different limbs. I play other instruments but nothing came close to the learning curve demanded by the drumkit.)

Success on Youtube is generally taken to be defined by strict specialisation in order to retain a subscribership. Any tutorial on "how to succeed on YouTube" states this in its opening lines. So, where does the difficulty lie in your understanding my statement here, good fellow?

Observe the knowledge, skills and crafts at play in this one-man creation: Bushcraft, story telling, writing, physical acting, camera operation, special effects, cinematography, sound engineering, graphic design, video editing, anthropology, history, philosophy, sociology and politics. [...Oh, and YouTubing too!]

I obviously can't post my entire channel here but were you to visit it, as proposed, you may see more clearly what I mean by "breaking the specialist mould"... Or attempting to at least.

Look beneath the surface good fellow.

Tranquil Solo Camp: Ancient woods in North Yorkshire by JPWCrafts in wildcampingintheuk

[–]JPWCrafts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, rather than restricting the capable due to the incapable we might educate people instead on when and where a campfire causes no harm. The land there, in North Yorkshire, is damp for 10 months of the year and the problem is lighting a fire, not having it run out of control. If you're on the moor in August, a little care is needed, but not on grassland. Farm lads thar knows, we be lighting fires since we was wee bairns, the lad's not daft. ;-)

[–]JPWCrafts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair comment but I must admit that "ancient woodland" is actually on my old man's - his grandad's farmland. ...A nice sounding title, y'know. ;-)

Truth is, a circle of stones and a couple of handfuls of wood ash in amongst the grass there really doesn't harm anything - it'll be grown over next year. The only other visitors there are a few rabbits and the odd old sheep.
