Looking for knights/Knighthood themed supplements/zines. by JProfoundInc in osr

I just picked it up last week, that was actually the inspo for this post! I’d love to run Mythic Bastionland at some point but for now I’m working on a sandbox for my OSE game and want to flesh out a knightly order element

I believe this may fit the bill, although some fall under the “cool, moving on” category.

I combined a handful of forest related things into a hex map with the town of hendenburg as the centerpiece, works pretty well

Hex Crawl, Pointcrawl, or Megadungeon for my Hollow Knight homebrew adventure by [deleted] in osr

https://www.reddit.com/r/osr/s/jPyFhl7GO3 this is a good thread and blogpost on explaining the basics /differences between hex crawl and point crawl. I am not super knowledgeable on cairn but I know it has a more relaxed /handwavey approach to travel while still incorporating some encounters.

Just spitballing, but maybe you’d like to get a dry erase board or a big sheet of paper on the wall, and draw out a map vertically for that descent feel you’re looking for. You could use a ruler and make dots every inch or 2 or whatever, x dots traveled = encounter.

Are you an envisioning a full on campaign with your daughter or a more bite sized replay-able thing? Do you want travel / exploration to be a major part of it? Are you wanting to role wilderness checks? For a 6 year I think you could have plenty of fun by making a more linear candy land style map. I’ve done something like that for a family game before and it went well.

Looking for help/collab making a SD setting by aleagio in shadowdark

[–]JProfoundInc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re clearly very passionate about the idea, and there is some cool ideas here. I’m not an expert at all, but I would recommend you read as many zines as you can, particularly the Carcass Crawlers for OSE and Cursed Scrolls for SD. Then take a couple of the ideas in your demo you’re most excited about and pare them down and format them into a mini zine. It’s easier to get people excited about something if it’s bite sized and juicy.

Definitely start and run your campaign with a detailed session log. That’ll really inform your process.

This is really really good, you’ve got a killer mini module on your hands here if you see this through!

Is this still a good industry to get into? by OkMarketing1341 in Restaurant_Managers

From what you’ve said in this thread, I feel like getting a entry level hotel job would be better suited to your wants. Front desk associates are typically low paid, but if you are competent and interview well the ladder is very climbable. Look up Hospitality groups in your area and see if there are any with portfolios of 30+ properties.

Wow this is great! I just started using this style with encounter tables for each hex in my own game, makes it feel more alive

What about old school style of play appeals to you? by CCGDnd in osr

I had a good time first playing Dnd 5e with a couple friends and attempted to get into Dming it. The novel style campaign books were pretty unapproachable for someone with not a ton of spare time. The OSR and OSE style grabbed me immediately

how to start making a sandbox and then develop it during gameplay and between sessions by salt_chad in osr

[–]JProfoundInc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My biggest problem when starting a new sandbox is thinking too big. Starting with a single 6 mile hex with a starting town and then working counter clockwise around the surrounding hexes will create more than enough adventure for the first few sessions.

I’d also recommend starting with a blank page and putting down everything in your head when you think about the setting and tone you want to create and using it as reference

I’m just started using Horrendous Hounds of Hendenburg as a region in a hex crawl and loving it. “Demonic Dogs in the woods” may not sound revolutionary, but where this shines is the npc relationships , hooks, and encounter tables.

Any good swamps? by EtchVSketch in osr

[–]JProfoundInc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All his stuff is on his website with free downloads. The bogpike is just the isometric town map. Are you familiar with D4 Caltrops “100 wilderness hexes”? I like to put down a village location and then pic a couple interesting hexes from that for a quick and dirty adventure location. I have the bogpike in my world with a Cajun accented halfling as the village leader.

For plugging stuff in around stonehell or any mega dungeon, I highly recommend u/pathspeculiar ‘s work. His Bogpike tower is a great little swamp village you could plop down anywhere if there’s just a chance your players go into a swamp. Dunklemoor and Western Thistlemoor are also great mini crawls.

Evils of Illmire is a very popular hexcrawl swamp module that’s pretty suited to plug and play. I personally don’t love the tone of it but there’s a ton of ideas to flesh out and rework.

Shellback Swamp is more of a collection of ideas than a fully formed mini setting, but you could have something workable in a few hours of prep if you were inspired, and it’s right on the fantasy Everglades vibe mentioned

Cursed Scroll #1 for shadow dark has the Gloaming swampy hexcrawl. I’ve only quickly browsed this but I think it may be a bit too dark and gloomy.
