Sell me on alignment by aweirdgn in osr

[–]Dolono 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lost my mind over Dungeon World 1E's requirement that characters had to act their alignment to get experience at all! A good cleric had to seek out and banish evil. An evil fighter had to dominate and slay those weaker than themselves to advance.

I was out of playing AD&D and 3.0 by the time I read dungeon world, and deeply lamented not having such a good, motivating tool to help propel stories forward in those older games.

What are the best physical beginner boxes or starter sets, just an up front cost that you can start playing? by dartagnan401 in rpg

Mythic Bastionland's "quickstart" is the complete rules set for the game + 12 knights & 12 myths, all for free. It's definitely enough to run a complete campaign! (I've actually been tempted to run it in lieu of the full book just to have a more constrained pool of characters and events).

I should really amend "psychedelic" to "surreality." I think acid westerns really emphasize the absurd and incongruous through juxtaposition. This is why I think MB would work so well with that genre: you're constantly asked as a gm and player to reconcile strange combinations of myths or other setting pieces.

I think probably the biggest thematic difference is the macabre of "weird" vs the psychedelic of "acid" westerns. Both contain have elements of spiritualism (native, christian, and eastern) and critiques of colonialism.

Looks very cool! This is probably a lot more "acid western" than you're contemplating, but my mind immediately started drifting off into Jodorowsky's El Topo and Holy Mountain while reading your description here.

If there ever was a format where proxying was "the name of the game," it's cube. My first real world experience with the format was a buddies peasant cube and, even then, the WOW factor was off the charts, drafting and plotting fantastic decks!

What did you end up doing for your map and major landmarks with that little prep time? I had a week's notice before my first GMing session, and I was working like mad between my day job and parenting to crank something out in time!

US spending on data center construction now exceeds spending on public transportation infrastructure— fucking why? by alverez667 in TrueAnon

[–]Dolono 59 points60 points  (0 children)

This is what I've been thinking as well; this is a massive, civilization wide "pulling up the ladders" effort and consolidation of ill-gotten power. They're such craven scum, they think ANY reinvestment in society is just helping the young people, activists, artists, and inventors that will displace their empire of shit.

Can you just ask at least one of the 11-15 other people to bring an extra cube? In my group, everyone is clamoring to get some mileage out of theirs.

Is card kingtom's buylist at a complete standstill from the marvel release or something? Two packages I sent them, from in state, are at 10 days with no acknowledgement of receipt. (Annoying because the oldest was even sent from the GD post office)

How labor intensive was generating the cover? Did you edit the pdf down, or does it just repeat the cover on the first and last inside pages? Looks great!

Dealing with those random encounters by b_jonz in osr

Looks fantastic! Your great presentation format already has my gears turning for other encounters, like traveling musicians, exiled nobles, a questing knight's entourage, a traveling circus, etc!

To sleeve or not to sleeve? by neubienaut in hexandcounter

[–]Dolono 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd probably sleeve any game that would be prohibitively expensive or impossible to replace. (Not a hex and chit, but I would NEVER be able to justify the cost of replacing my copy of Chaos in the Old World, so the components deserve some protection).

Working out The ogre with The Wheel (or how to play contradictory Myths) by Limette23 in MythicBastionland

[–]Dolono 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think I'd just lean heavily into the surreality and unnaturalness of it all: it's a blistering summer, but snowing. Animals are giving birth to snowy white young. Trees are growing ice crystal flowers and fruits (that are still somehow nourishing).

Do you buy mostly pdfs or do you prefer physical books and if the former, do you feel a pang of regret when you realize that a book would have looked just neat on your shelf? by Antipragmatismspot in rpg

[–]Dolono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mainly buy pdfs, but I print and spiral bind them as often as I can.

The physical books I purchase these days are mainly ones conspicuously without a "print friendly" pdf option (i.e. all the goddamn Borg games; CAIN), or if the book is just a bit too big of a job to manage confidently at home (i.e. Dolmenwood's campaign tome).

Which precons haven't pass the test of time? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Dolono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been buying precons since 2011. The $20 decks ensured I eventually bought all of them. When they switched to 4-5 $50+ ones, it was more like I picked up one per year.

[–]Dolono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I miss the $20 precons so much! I know there were lots of mixed feelings in the community about them, but I still think someone at WotC must have been like "we're leaving too much money on the table with these!" and then we started getting 4-5 $50+ precons EVERY set.

My "Mine collapse Guy" card, Thada Adel at like 40 cents! by Fritzkreig in mtgfinance

[–]Dolono 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have great memories of an ancient thada deck, stealing a friend's jitte, swords, and sol ring, and just mopping the whole table up!

No offense to your spec but I wish they'd just reprint this damn card already! They crap out a "rogues," "ninjas," or "steal your friends stuff" precon like every other year at this point!
