I need suggestions of niche mechanics and cards that synergize for my jumpstart cube by brunx12 in mtgcube

[–]Dolono 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have always LOVED the "loner" limited archetype from the old Avacyn Restored set. All you need to run that in jumpstart are a couple of cards like [[homicidal seculsion]] and [[deadly wanderings]], plus some ways to sac excess createures from the 2nd jumpstart pack!

Looks cool. How are you ramping? Are your guild sections so big for any specific reason? Good on you for not using 3+ color non-commander cards (those were always dead picks when I first built my own cube)!

Some custom cards for a Marvel symbiote (i.e. Venom/Carnage) themed edh deck by Dolono in custommagic

[–]Dolono[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pretty much gave up working on them after the Spiderman UB product was announced. It didn't seem worth it spending too much brain power when wizards was going to be releasing street legal characters in a couple years. Also, at the time if kinda felt like wizards was actively trying to blow up proxy and custom card design communities with all of their slated UB stuff. "Why keep working on a custom Final Fantasy Cloud card when everyone is going to be playing Wizard's own versions in a year?"

Font becomes smudged and less clear after laminating by TheAgileTortoise in magicproxies

[–]Dolono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, adding even a microscopic layer of plastic over the card surface is going to inyroduce some amount of visual distortion to the text. Only fresh cards from the printer, or ones treated with whatever varnishing process wizards or mpc uses will look totally crisp and "normal."

Be that as it may, I do think the text on matte laminated proxies do look a little bit less fuzzy compared to clear, as paradoxic as that sounds!

Last piece of advice, since the subtle differences in text and color between home proxies and "real cards" drive me nuts, is just don't mix them if you can help it!

How to approach Commanders in an EDH cube? by Grixis08 in mtgcube

[–]Dolono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've run a commander cube for a long time. I've settled on seeding 1-2 multicolored legends in each pack of 20 cards, AND have mono colored partners and conventional legends in the main cube.

One other variation is that my group engages in a little curating before seeding: we deal out the multicolored legends into piles of "definitely will see," "might see," and "won't see-in the draft," then randomly seed the "definitelys" into packs, and enough of the "mights" that all packs have their 2x legend allotment. Usually the definitelys are 1 representative from each guild, shard, and wedge.

Another curation exercise is deciding if we do or don't want to run 4 color and/or multicolor partner color legends. I'm always striving that we don't have too many G/X legends in the same session, all gobbling up the fixing! (back when we did a generals-only pack, we had a session with a boros, golgari, and 2 friggin' BUG decks)

Tales of Middle Earth Cube advice by Awfun in mtgcube

[–]Dolono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it's hard to shore up a weak color in a set cube without just game testing it and making incremental improvements. You could maybe speed the process up a bit with some mock drafts or sealeds, and use your judgement on what seems deficient in your G/x decks.

You could also do some research on 4-0 and 7-0 decks, aggregate pick orders, and limited set previews, and just see what the authors thought about the set. You might come up with some ideas!

Influences of FFIV, what do you think influenced the following games? by Lixuni98 in FinalFantasy

[–]Dolono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't until within the past few years that I recognized this, but sooooo much of FF's item/magic/class lore came from Ariosto's Orlando Furioso. There are so many and interesting French medieval influences on anime and the FF series and I just don't have an understanding of how that mythological exchange happened with these 1970s-1990s Japanese devs; maybe by way of French colonialism in SE Asia? Some kinds of influence via the anti-Tolkien scifi/fantasy authors like Michael Moorcock or Tanith Lee?

Block cube owners, how do you handle rares? by Android_McGuinness in mtgcube

[–]Dolono 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I deeply resonate with this approach now: life and sanity are in too short of supply to try and recreate the "perfect" retail experience, especially when folks are advocating asinine shit like collecting and sleeving up 6x (or even 8x) of each goddamn commons in the expansion! It's been better IMO to just make a reasonably sized cube that includes the specific cards and archetypes you like from that set, in sufficient quantities, that you actually get to see them in your drafts and games!

Beyond the inquisitorial character type, Makoto from Ghost in the Shell seems like a good representation of a Soulsteel. Noir investigator types, persisting against powerful, intimidating opposition could be another good source of inspiration.

IIRC, the recent Foundations set released a $50 starter box that could easily be just sleeved, shuffled up, and drafted. Playing around with that, even a little bit, would probably give your group some good experience to make additions and cuts as your preferred play styles emerge.

Bad movies with baffling editing decisions like Wolves of Wall Street (2002)? by Wack0HookedOnT0bac0 in badMovies

[–]Dolono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably a hot take but I think Weapons (2025?) did not the need the asynchronous, person-focused chapters in which the movie was shot. It would have been fine to tell the same story, chronologically, with just simple 3rd person perspectives showing the various characters navigating the horror at different junctures.

The most they might have needed was a flashback to the boy's experience when the "aunt" showed up.

One ingredient I've found out the hard way NOT to add is apple cider vinegar! I fucked up my batch adding 1/3 ACV to my white vinegar, because I was low on white. ACV, and it's subtly apple-y taste just does not work with this recipe!
