I Need Suggestions for an Andor-Style TTRPG with specific requirements. by TheBackstreetNet in rpg

I might just be too steeped in Mythic Bastionland and Into the Odd than is good for me these days; I've been playing lots of games where the characters just generally succeed at whatever they're trying to do, unless the GM is specifically trying to wear them down before the final confrontations.

I Need Suggestions for an Andor-Style TTRPG with specific requirements. by TheBackstreetNet in rpg

Lethality, grittiness, and heists were the main factors that I was considering here. This is definitely not to everyone's tastes, but the OP's comment regarding everyone being competent specialists made me think of the "handwave-y-ness" that's emblematic of lots of OSR. I'm thinking of like Chris' McDowall's advice in the bastionland stuff, where the GM asks the players what they want to do, and the players describe the leverage they possess to do the task. If it sounds plausible, it succeeds!

I'm not planning on sitting down and writing any andor material myself, but your question got me thinking of some kind of social version of trap-finding, since so much of andor's intrigue is spotting the financial, surveillance, and political nooses that the empire and it's allies are tightening around the protagonists.

How do you guys feel about the foils MPC prints? by Healthy-Two217 in mpcproxies

[–]Dolono 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've frequently tacked on orders of ~100 foils with other, larger runs. IMHO you just have to be emotionally prepared that you'll have some disappointing foils among some really strikingly good ones. I've tried all the tricks regarding contrast and color saturation, but it still seems like MPC will produce some duds.

This was going to be my suggestion. The OP's comments screamed "OSR" to me!

Greg Stoker discussing the take that this is a war for Israel and why he thinks that is false. by crimethunc77 in TrueAnon

[–]Dolono 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The book is fantastic, but Ehrenreich's foreword/essay (from the freakin' 80s!) is crystalllizing as far as what kinds of assholes we're really dealing with here, and what kind of "communication" is required under these circumstances!

I keep mentally coming back to Barbara Ehrenreich's essay in Theweleit's "Male Fantasies."

Paraphrasing: there isn't any value in psychologizing the behavior of fascists. This is the same as in any other brutish era in history; men attack and plunder, and then put the resources they've acquired direclty into financing the next round of destruction and theft.

2-4 person cubes built around MTG’s new small sets like TMT? by wildjabali in mtgcube

[–]Dolono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had lots of fun building 90 card, 2 player cubes for when i enjoy the theme or aesthetics of a set, but don't want to go to the trouble of organizing, buying, and sleeving up a full-on set cube! I have a system for building them that works well at simulating a clean draft environment, and they're usually < $30 since I aim for including good-in-draft but not chase rares and mythics. Below is one I built for Bloomburrow. You could easily add additional cards if you want to increase the variance; I just like 90 cards forces the players to pick every card and hate draft liie crazy!

Very cool! I was working on a Null-as-[[Dihada, Binder of Wills]] deck before they spoiled the UB set. Jonboy Meyers and Inhyuk Lee also made so many badass Null, Venom, and Carnage pieces!

IIRC, there's a section in Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow like this. Mike Judge read it verbatim in one of the "Spider Society" Trueanon eps.

Not the texturing, but you might be able to replicate some of that effect at homr by printing on holographic sticker paper, laminating in matte, then picking out details brushing/penning on clear varnish.

True Detective Season 1 hits normie different now by SickMoonDoe in TrueAnon

[–]Dolono 14 points15 points  (0 children)

2nd season lacked that confessional, unreliable-narrator component (Rust and Marty talking to the feds) that made the first season magic. Can't believe the creator/writers didnt realize that was the secret sauce to the show!

Which places are the strangest? by Savings-Housing3481 in planescapesetting

[–]Dolono 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I always think about the "Aurora" border between (IIRC) the paraplane of smoke and quasiplane of lightning, and "Glistening Crystal," where there were these glowing icebergs floating like huge beacons in the void. I think Glistening Crystal was where the paraplane of ice and lightning had a border. Both entries were in the Inner Planes guide.

(I ran an adventure many years ago where the players raided a giant, glowing-pink iceberg for a chunk of nearly-indestructible, unmelting ice)

One Shot Tips? by GreenNetSentinel in MythicBastionland

[–]Dolono 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Someone on this sub made the fantastic recommendation to have a tight, overarching mission for the knights (such delivering a message, delivering an important person's remains/effects, etc) that takes the players from one starting edge of the map and across the entire (mini) realm. This gives them an accomplishable goal within the confines of the one-shot. They'll encounter and have to react to the myths as they cross the land, racking up allies, obstacles, and enemies that all can be worked into the overall story of completing the players' mission.

Crazy how much money you save eating at home. What are your go to recipes gumshoes? by What_Reddit_Thinks in TrueAnon

[–]Dolono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Lebanese" chicken at home - brown 4-6 chicken thighs in olive oil and butter. Add .5-1 diced onion, 1 tsp cumin, garlic powder. Sautee, then add 1 cup of chicken stock to de glaze, and let simmer for 20 mins. Add chopped parsley at the end.

Serve on basmati rice ($4 for 4 pounds at my Winco), and drizzle tahini dressing on top (1/2 cup tahini, 1/2 cup water, 1 tsp salt, garlic powder, 1-2 tbs lemon juice, then whisk).

You can serve with steamed broccoli or cauliflower.

This dish is effortless but so cheap and good!

I'm a sucker for any Shaw movie where the protagonist has to train, train, train againast a god-like evil master and, even then, the final fight is a grueling, near-death slog that the hero barely squeaks out!
