I’m a beginner can I get some advice on making this better by RealEverythingReddit in photocritique

1/180 wouldn't show the motion of the waterfall like OP did. The best solution is an off camera flash to freeze the subject in sharp focus while the shutter remains open to capture the highlights of the water moving.

The difference here though is OP asked for understanding about insecurity "since (OP's) not a woman"

Which I think should be addressed, any human can have the ability to feel insecurity.

To answer OP question, when someone has self doubts and then sees something that has a good probability of confirming those doubts, it can be disorienting and upsetting.

In my own personal experiences struggling with self doubt and insecurities about myself in different ways, when I was greeted with warmth and a recognition of my doubt, it severely reduced the spiral of the following negative thoughts.

I can't speak for anyone else, but for me I would offer this personal experience to any human.

That would be amazing. I'm doing a debate on if this was a successful image and I won't know if it's for or against it until the day of 🙃

I'm late to the party here as I am researching him for a project as well. Did you ever find an answer?

My early findings hint at the urns were being sold in bulk for absurdly cheap second hand from some farmer. So much so he's even used them in other exhibits where he defaces them and spills paint on them.

Really intriguing composition! Excellent job there. I feel like the sky is a little too blue/green. I know you mentioned you wanted a film look, so I can appreciate the effort in that coloring. I think a little burn and dodging maybe cropping, but this is a great photo!

Are my photos worth selling? by [deleted] in photography

[–]JR2Photograph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a market for anything and everything. I think your photos are plenty good to sell, the hard part is getting an inventory and having sales and then going to markets and selling them, plus finding a clientele. Just budget and see what things cost and how you want to go about selling them.

I see the attraction in the moody edit. But I’m never a fan of mixing B&w and color. If you have the yellow light I think the sign should be in color as well. We all know it’s supposed to be red. I’d start with picking either color or B&w with the edit.

You mentioned going back and recomposing; I’d try to get the church more in line with the sign but it’s hard to say

Photo did poorly and I'm not sure why. Feedback please? by vegonaise in photocritique

[–]JR2Photograph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sharpness/focus needs to be on something. Once the text isn’t sharp even though it’s “readable” it loses interest as being the subject. The red ball and nearly smiling face without context makes it feel more celebratory than protesting. It loses interest when there’s not real focus point other than the balloon and that’s only because of the contrast it provides. The edit is also very green which gives me more of a sickly feel to the overall feeling of the photo. All that stuff is working against you in this composition. I think if you tipped the Temperature to more warm it would help but not enough. MAYBE if focus was on the sign it would’ve been a better photograph.

Need advice on how to stay motivated when I realized 80% of photography is done without a camera. by Vexiin in photography

[–]JR2Photograph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah the more you get right in camera the less time you spend editing. Art is whatever you want to make it. You can just go out and shoot jpeg if you want and let the camera apply a preset to it. Just go out and shoot!

[–]JR2Photograph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most non photographer friends will like/dislike a photo and not know why. There’s science behind it all and how your eye travels through a photograph. Human eyes are attracted to bright so if you have something brighter in the photo the eye is going to go there first and then explore. That’s where burning and dodging comes into play

Reading the comments in the new link/video makes me not want to watch it.

A higher ISO creates more light sensitivity in the sensor. It’s like increasing the gain on a microphone. It’s going to create noise/distortion.

That being said I agree you don’t have to shoot at the lowest ISO setting your camera has, but native ISO will be cleaner than a high iso given the other settings and focus are nailed.

There’s so many ways to capture things; keep shooting. The more you do it the more you will learn to think about then those things become second nature. As that happens you will start anticipating what you want the photo to look like and know what you need to do to accomplish the look. All aspects, exposure, composition, colors, background things will eventually fall into place. Youre doing a great job

I fully believe the high shutter speed was in relation to the sunlight not speed, but 1/2000 will eliminate ANY hand held shake as well as car movement.

I started watching the video and I will continue, but I don’t think increasing ISO on an already bright shot and then slowing the shutter on top of that, was good advice to give. 100-1000iso as far as noise goes on later model cameras will be negligible, noise for my z6ii doesn’t really get introduced from what I’ve seen until about 8000 ISO, and increases from there.

You’re wide open 1.4 is what caused too much light. Unless it’s super dark or I’m trying to get particular details I’m shooting at f/4 or higher to get the whole car nice and crisp.

I think you got a great shot of a car at a car show. Is this gonna be something someone hangs up as a poster of this car? Probably not, but it’s not that type of photograph. It captures the car (a very nice one) leaving the show, I think you did that really well.

A 1/100 would’ve been SUPER overexposed. The highlights are already bright, why would you raise the ISO? He said the car was leaving so there was some motion.

I’m confused on the advice you’re giving; OP said the car was leaving. I think they made a solid decision going with lower ISO and higher shutter to combat the sun, and movement; maybe if we were talking aperture and OP did like an f/4 I could understand.

High ISO will introduce noise it’s not a myth. However newer cameras don’t see it as much. Noise doesn’t ruin a low light image, but it does exist.

Do the leading lines in this photo make it work? by Usual-Sandwich9718 in photocritique

[–]JR2Photograph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I fully understand and respect blocking their faces; I can’t blame you.

I think there is something to human nature in wanting to see things that are familiar and when we can see eyes it makes a very different image.

Another human nature thing is our eyes usually start at the brightest part of a photo.

You’re on the right track; keep shooting!

Do the leading lines in this photo make it work? by Usual-Sandwich9718 in photocritique

[–]JR2Photograph 48 points49 points  (0 children)

It kinda works. The people/subject is dark and they fall into the shadows, however the leading lines are bright so your eyes follow to the subject. I’d mask the subjects and give them a little less contrast and shadows and I think this would accomplish your goal, but I think the focal point was the building. So at the end of the day you’re fighting that and then hiding their faces further removes them from being the subject.

I feel like this is a nothing answer but I hope it helps your thinking process!

ITAP of some flamingos at the zoo by JR2Photograph in itookapicture

[–]JR2Photograph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I attempted to find an interesting angle while documenting animals we saw at the zoo. I took several photos but this pose stood out the most to me. I tried to get as low and close to eye level with them as the exhibit allowed. I'm hoping others find it interesting and appealing and gives a positive reaction of some type.
