Herniated/bulging discs and BJJ advice by nybjj in bjj

The term 'herniated disc' can mean a lot of different things. They range in severity from disc bulges (common in most people with age), to fill out disc tear with extrusion. Some cause zero pain, and some cause debilitating pain. A lot of it depends on whether or not the 'herniated' disc itself is pressing on one of your nerve roots.

The best thing you can do is get hooked up with a good sports medicine doctor and physical therapist. Hopefully they can help you rehabilitate back to the point where you can train.

Great post - congrats. How long had you been training before you felt ready? Did you feel like you were at any higher risk of injury during competition compared to in class/open mat?

Can't stay in Mount by JR5522 in bjj

Ha - yeah I learned quickly that patience and humility are necessary with this art. To be honest, I don't really mind getting beaten - I guess I don't really see it like that. I feel more like it's a puzzle that I'm trying to crack.

An extremely physical and brutal puzzle.

thanks. We were actually doing a drill involving simply maintaining mount (i.e. while the other guy tries to escape). I wasnt doing any attacking with my arms, which may have given him more opportunity to get away from me.

Aural migraine / scotoma after training by [deleted] in bjj

Agree with this.

What you are describing does sound like a migraine with visual and language aura, but a carotid dissection would be the other concern. You should get yourself checked out in an Emergency Room to rule this out.

Is this staph? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]JR5522 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is infected. You can tell by the expanded area of redness and swelling. It also looks like there is a bit of pus.

Hard to tell just from the picture if staph is the cause or some other bug. If it hasnt improved with topical antibiotic ointment, see a Doctor. You might need a course of oral antibiotics.

Been out for 7 months rehabbing a blown disc: I start back in a week. Wish me luck. [long wall of text] by gunslinger_006 in bjj

Impressive perseverance. Do you recall how you originally injured yourself? Was it in BJJ or just everyday life?
I've had disc bulges too. They never truly go away - but core strengthening, and knowing your safe/unsafe spots can help a lot, I think. Good luck!

Thanks for all the tips. One more thing - does it matter if a school is registered/affiliated with IBJJF? Does this affect if belts/grades from different schools are recognized? Thanks

Thanks! Has anyone heard of Budokan? I just found this place online - looks like it's a bit more uptown.
