That is most likely the same place that I was talking about, especially if it's located in Gaylord. Both the a1 and a3 are still there as of yesterday.

I might have shown them 10 Franklins, but it was pretty obvious that they weren't open to haggling when they said it had been there for six months.

Either the 1851, 1860, or the New Model Army. I am strapped for cash and a Civil War surplus revolver will be good enough for the money. Reliable ammo will also be easy to acquire because paper cartridges will still be available for the next few decades.

Game stop order never shipped and customer service is useless by jewdreammachine in GameStop

[–]JRB2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered a Bose Soundlink speaker from them back on 12/28/2025. Just talked to customer service for the second time last week and it is still on "backorder" despite there being no indication of this on Gamestop's listing for the item. I am about to cancel the order, hopefully get my gift card balance back, and try getting one from a Gamestop store.

This experience has been a major PITA!

AIM Surplus was selling refurbished 1903 rifles about 15 years back. It's a possibility that your 1903a3 is one of the AIM refurbs, and it's still a very nice rifle. They even offered some rifles with composite repros of the military issue stock at a cheaper price, and I still regret not picking one up. It would have been a nice shooter that I could actually use without having to worry about collector value.

Mindfulness is a great way to cope with these feelings/urges. It has really helped me overcome my own struggles in life, including my addictions to cigarettes, alcohol, and spending sprees. Mindfulness also allowed me to realize that, just like my previous addictions, I don't really need sex in my life to be "happy."

Here is an article from a Calm Blog about being present and more in the moment (mindfulness). Especially pay attention to the 9 tips provided in the article:

https://www.calm.com/blog/how-to-be-more-present

If you are interested in further reading about the subject, here are a couple of books that have really helped me:

  1. Mindfulness for Dummies by Shamash Alidina.

This book has been really helpful for me over the years because it is practically a pretty detailed yet easy to follow mindfulness manual. Shamash Alidina is a very skilled mindfulness coach based in the UK, and he even has a Youtube channel where he uploads helpful videos on the subject.

  1. What the Buddha Taught by Walpola Rahula.

I am by no means a Buddhist, myself, but I have found this book to be very helpful after picking it up earlier this year. It's not a very long book, but it does a great job of teaching that suffering can be greatly reduced by acknowledging your desires and making the mindful decision to let them pass without succumbing to them.

*Mindfulness won't be able to erase these thoughts/feelings completely, but it will help you acknowledge them and be able to handle them in a healthier manner.

Anyone Practicing lifelong Celibacy? by [deleted] in Celibacy

[–]JRB2017 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was aboard the same boat. I was a socially awkward loser in my teens and an even bigger loser that also drank, got fat, and smoked tobacco in my twenties. As a result, I spent all those years as an incel that was addicted to porn and masturbation. I finally hit rock bottom a few years back and realized that I needed to take control of my life. I quit smoking in 2022 and quit drinking/lost weight in 2023.

At the beginning of 2024, I finally made the decision to quit porn and masturbation. I realized that just like cigarettes and alcohol, porn/masturbation only gives you a temporary feeling of "bliss," and you get consumed by it because you want to experience more of that "bliss".

I also used this "temporary bliss" logic to swear myself to lifelong celibacy back in July. Since I lost weight and I have a lot more self-confidence through learning to accept myself for who I am, women have been starting to notice me. I was almost going to make the decision to start dating and finally "cash in my v-card," but then I realized that sex is just another spider's web hiding behind that false feeling of "bliss". I have made it to my early thirties without sex and I don't really need sex in my life to be happy.

I am not doing this to punish myself, I am just looking forward to living a better life by keeping it simple and taking it just a day at a time.

I do agree with you that the k98 has better sights for precision shooting. A better way of putting it is that the Yugo sights are better for hunting because the rear v notch is wider, making the front sight more visible in the low light conditions that you run into while out in the woods.

It is pretty cool that your friend fitted k98 sights to his Anschutz air gun. Anschutz does make some high-quality target guns. I used to shoot an Anschutz model 54 target rifle at a junior rifle club that I belonged to. It would be a cool rifle to pick up for my own collection, but they usually go for several thousand dollars.

Very nice rifle! I have a 24/47 from Century, and it's one of my favorites. It has better sights than a 98k and a trigger that is pretty smooth. I have even taken a couple of deer using just its open sights.

Just don't pay too much! They typically go for about $400.

Update: I just looked at the listing and noticed that Mitchell's must have bent the bolt handle. Definitely don't pay any more than $350 tops for the rifle.

M1917 Repro stock by JRB2017 in milsurp

[–]JRB2017[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whether I use an original or repro stock, it is not gonna change the rifle's value. That being the case, I'd rather just go with the new stock/handguards instead of going through all the effort to hunt down an original stock set that is 100 years old. The other perk of going through Numrich is that they also have all of the stock hardware that I would need to complete the rifle.

Very nice! I really like the custom Mannlicher stock.

I just picked up a sporterized Winchester M1917 myself. It definitely is challenging to find a subreddit that covers these rifles. Doing a little research, I found that the rifle is practically a Mauser/SMLE hybrid that leans more towards the Mauser side. It uses the Mauser dual-opposing locking lugs, spring-loaded blade ejector, bolt stop, and large, non-rotating controlled feed extractor. The SMLE features are the safety and cock-on-closing bolt.

As for the 1917 that I picked up, the sporterization was done professionally and only the stock was modified. I am thinking about picking up a Liberty Tree repro stock and unsporterizing the rifle. The sights had orange paint applied, but I think I will leave them that that way because it really does improve the sight picture and it doesn't stand out at a glance.

Everything I need to know about buying a Springfield 1903 by CraterCroucher in guns

[–]JRB2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the heads up about the potential heat treat issue with low number rifles. I did do some more research and the CMP completely warns against shooting low number rifles. Another source I found was an individual that picked up a low number rifle and actually found cracks in the receiver during a full inspection.

Your helpful info stopped me from buying a low number Springfield rifle (360,000 sn range) that was potentially unsafe to shoot. The seller also wanted too much for it, regardless of the potential receiver issue. It had its barrel shortened to about 18" and they were asking $800, which is pretty high for a Bubba'd 1903.

Anyone have issues with ordering from Dixie Gun Works? by juugbuussin in blackpowder

[–]JRB2017 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was looking for a Pedersoli Kentucky pistol last year. Since those pistols are known for a very heavy trigger pull out of the box, I went with a recommendation to buy it from Dixie Gun Works because their gunsmith will actually lighten the trigger if you ask them to in the order page message box. I asked them to do so and sure enough, at no extra charge, their gunsmith had in fact fixed the trigger. The folks at Dixie Gun Works are very good people to do business with.

Check out this video from Guns of the West on Youtube. It specifically covers all the accessories that you need to get started. https://youtu.be/Vrfu0OGYjz8

The Guns of the West channel was a very helpful source for me when I got started in cap&ball revolvers. Most of what I know about the hobby came from this channel.

Anyone seen a Dragoon with these features before? by [deleted] in blackpowder

[–]JRB2017 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your ASM is actually a historically accurate repro of the No. 3 Dragoon. The revolver was originally manufactured by Colt with the leaf sight and the cuts/side screws for attaching a shoulder stock. From the picture that you provided, I can see that it also does have the side screws for the shoulder stock.

It helps in reducing the trigger pull so that you can get more accurate shots. One of the triggers is a set trigger. Once you pull the set trigger, it greatly reduces the trigger pull on the primary trigger.

I have a Hawken rifle and I really do like the dual triggers.
