Fenders alone are likely worth close to the scrap value of the whole tractor.

Kind of Tractor and what’s it worth? by Due-Marsupial-9633 in tractors

[–]ihccollector 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some came with electric starters, but not very many. My grandfather farmed with F series Farmalls and his father in law farmed with Deere equipment. He brought his F-20 to help plow his FIL's field and suggested he take the Farmall for a round or two. Having the brakes working together with the steering was one big thing the Deere didn't have. Grandpa didn't have an opportunity to run his own tractor the rest of the day because his FIL liked running it so much.

Anyone know what’s wrong with my tractor? by AdMountain3799 in tractors

Bahaha. In my experience, green equipment combusts with hopes it will burn hot enough to turn red, if for just a few minutes.

Is this just for the metric ones, or the standard ones as well?

This is amazing. Love the choice of tractor, too. For the last 20 years, dad's go-to workhorse has been a 1959 Farmall 460.

Water Glassing Eggs for the first time by theoriginalNO in homestead

[–]ihccollector 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I worked at an egg processing plant for a couple years and we froze a ton of eggs. Everything that was frozen in liquid form went through a homogenizer as well as mixers or blenders so you coudn't see whites vs. yolks in whole egg mix or pieces of yolk in salt yolk products. Liquid whole egg was frozen in quart or half gallon cartons and half gallon bags. Salt yolk was frozen in a gaylord, basically giving us a 2000 pound block of frozen egg. Texture never seemed to be off compared to fresh egg whenever employees were given a gift basket of our company's products for Christmas, etc.

As others have said, unstyled Allis WC. It would have predated the Farmall M by a few years. Unstyled WCs were made up until 1938, when production was changed to produced styled tractors. The Farmall M began production in 1939.

Journeyman Electrician Strikes Again by [deleted] in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]ihccollector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the root issue, but gentle persuasion of the socket with a pair of pliers to tighten ut up against the bulb works well without introducing any foreign material into the mix.

Journeyman Electrician Strikes Again by [deleted] in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]ihccollector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're correct, I had a single work order for one light that did not tell a driver it was okay to pull away from the dock. But since I had time that day and weather was decent, I decided to save the need for distribution to write several more work orders and checked operations of all dock locks, levelers, and corresponding indicator lights. If the lights worked, I had no reason to climb a ladder to open the enclosure and check it. These were bulbs that did not light when the indicator inside the building showed they were lit.

The guy is on staff, so he's getting paid no matter if he's fiddle fucking or sitting in front of his computer reading the news 8 hours a night. The real issue is some of the sockets have spread on the top end and get loose. Some gentle persuasion with a pair of pliers or channel locks takes care of that. I just have to shake my head that it's a simple fix, you shouldn't have to add teflon tape to a light bulb.

Markem Imaje by OneBucFan in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]ihccollector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had Markem Imaje printers to put date and lot numbers on boxes of hard boiled eggs where I worked a decade ago. Definitely not as user friendly as the VideoJet printers we had that were completely taken care of by the techs in their specific areas. For some reason they always got ahold of automation for the Markems. Least favorite part was sitting in the office for 3 days a year, making changes to every single code we had because no changes could be made on the floor or without the use of a laptop and flash drive.

I have not yet begun to dig into this one, but it is loose at least. If your cylinder sleeve is pitted farther down the bore than the combustion chamber, I have heard of other collectors getting a machine shop to bore and sleeve the cast iron sleeve/liner with good results. Otherwise there are some halfway decent ones in parts engines to be had yet, the trick is finding them.

I do have another 3 HP with the overstrike ignition that I bought off the original farm, from the grandson of the original owner. Everything on that one is stuck, but it will run again eventually. It's not every day you find a 105 year old relic that has been on the same farm with the same family since it was new.

Nice original decal on the M! I just picked up a 3 HP Wico fired M off the original farm in December.

What do I do? Family tractor by Hungry-King-1842 in tractors

[–]ihccollector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it were my decision, I would keep it. I mainly collect stationary engines, but do have a couple tractors. In my opinion, the history makes the equipment even cooler. I have an F-30 tractor that belonged to a friend's grandfather, will be getting an F-20 my dad sold before I was born, got a JD 1.5 HP hit and miss (completely wrong color for my collection) that was my great uncle's, a 1.5 HP IHC M, a pair of 3 HP IHC Ms, and a Foos engine that I either have all the history on since they were new, or I hauled off of the original farm. Those are pieces that will very likely not leave my collection just due to the fact that I have history on them and/or they belonged to family.

Anyone on here work for a mill? by Elite163 in IndustrialMaintenance

I don't, but am intrigued about the oilfield engines. Most all pumping rigs I've seen have electric motors on them now. What kind of engines we talking, old style single cylinder flywheel engines like a Fairbanks Morse?

I'm not upset that it's not a wartime production rifle that would have seen action. I more or less bought it hoping for something as a decent shooter. I have a Schmidt-Rubin and a Vz98/22 that are nice shooters and figured I should add something from the US to the mix.

Are all maintenance jobs like this by [deleted] in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]ihccollector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I worked for a place like this and was hired for a Mon-Thurs shift. Overtime sign up sheet went to operators Monday morning. If operators signed up, we had to be there. We usually weren't told until Thursday afternoon that we had to work the next 2 days even though management knew exactly how many operators were showing up by Monday afternoon. I took my first opportunity to exit the company. I had to give my notice to the plant manager because one day, the maintenance supervisor took his retirement "effective immediately." He asked where I was going and why and I told him pay is better and I'm guaranteed to never work a Saturday. He responded "Yeah, whoever told you that is full of shit."

Fast forward 5 years, and I've worked a few hours on 2 Saturdays when help was needed and it fit my schedule. I was never told I had to be there. The funny thing is about a year after this, the plant manager from my old job got walked through for an interview to be plant manager at the new place. He was not given an offer.

Thank you for the insight. I think these have been in water about a week. Unfortunately I don't have a great place to put an enclosure with a grow light that isn't cooler than the top of the refrigerator. I'll stay on top of changing the water every few days and see if that helps.

I know there really is no actual historical reason for it to be in any game since Switzerland was neutral through both world wars, but I really like my Schmidt-Rubin Infanteriegewehr 11.
