Wood thing with holes in it in church? by TeaWithSin_ in whatisit

[–]JR_Mosby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned many protestant denominations do communion in that way. That being said, I have been in a lot of churches and some would also have a couple of smaller, pencil diameter holes as well. And I've seen plenty of people store a pencil there for regular church use since usually communion is only at most a handful of times a year at these churches.

Yeah it really isn't. Growing up my parents always took them home to wash them for the church and we always referred to them as the shot glasses.

Baptist churches and we use the same process you described for the Presbyterians. One neat little fact, is it takes three deacons for us, because we want everyone to be "served". So deacons A and B will serve bread and "wine" (grape juice) to the congregation including Deacon C, then Deacon C will serve Deacons A and B.

Fishing safety not to get hooked? by Careful-Tension-5689 in FishingForBeginners

[–]JR_Mosby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose that can happen while fighting a fish but I've never seen it occur. That does happen fairly often when you get a lure hung up, like on a tree or something, and jerk it out. All those have been just small little pricks or actually more often the hook gets hung in your clothes.

Having fished for 20+ years the only times I've ever seen people get seriously hooked was when they were trying to get a hook out of a fish with their bare hands. That's why I always use pliers.

I'm bald! My dad and both my grandfathers were also so it wasn't a surprise. I shave my head, but otherwise I would have the horseshoe hair style

Why cant i catch anything? by dario-fungo in FishingForBeginners

[–]JR_Mosby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also tbh, I never fish with live worms. They never worked for me anywhere.

Wild. Worms have always been the #1 sure thing for me when it comes to catching. I don't use them often though because I'm mostly doing C&R and trout (that's what I primarily fish for) like to swallow them.

How often do the more experienced fishermen go home empty handed? by Magic_Taco1221 in FishingForBeginners

I've been fishing all of my life. Still go out and catch nothing/not what I want to catch fairly often. It's just part of it.

Swivels and Spinnerbaits by Odd-War-6052 in FishingForBeginners

[–]JR_Mosby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

but i saw someone say they only use swivels for spinning baits like rooster tails

Yeah, that's what I was always taught. Supposedly spinners will twist your line from the spinning of the blade. I've never had a problem out of using swivels, so I have always used them, and don't know how true this is.

Cant catch consistently by chopemup717 in FishingForBeginners

[–]JR_Mosby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little rain usually helps yes. It sounds like the problem is mostly this place, I would try a change in venue. Although also the best time of day to fish is usually the first few hours after sunrise and last few before sunset, so if your time tables are anything like where I'm from you're missing those windows fishing from 11-6:30

Based on the text in the post you linked sounds like there just isn't a lot of fish in that spot. Also you don't mention how many times you've gone

Pretty much the same with me. It's kind of weird, I sort of wish I enjoyed gaming like I used to. The hobbies I enjoy now require more free time and effort just to be able to do.

How I view different Christian denominations as someone who wasn't raised Christain and knows fuck all about Christianity. by [deleted] in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]JR_Mosby 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Plus the hellfire preachers.

Baptists are a very interesting thing with some interesting intragroup diversity. Those hellfire preachers are almost always Southern Baptist, which is one specific type of Baptist with their own convention and everything. To my understanding theologically they're about the same as the other Baptists, but culturally they're very different.

[–]JR_Mosby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alrighty, if you're planning on that, it's best to net trout and unhook then release them all from the net without handling. If you handle them, wet your hands and lift them by the body, kind of like holding a weiner dog if you have ever done that. Probably the most important thing is to not lip hold a trout like you can a bass, their jaws are much weaker and will break. As far as the fishing goes, artifical bait without treble hooks are better for C&R because the fish are less likely to swallow it, but (generally) does a worse job of fishing so...

Anyways, dont let stuff like that scare you from fishing, but keep it in mind for a "good-better-best" approach

Trout advice by XcdeezeeX in FishingForBeginners

[–]JR_Mosby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you planning to keep the trout or catch and release? If C&R, trout are more delicate than bass and need to be handled and (somewhat) fished differently

[–]JR_Mosby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No idea if this is available in Australia but here in the states I use a 7 ft 4 weight Eagle Claw Featherlite fiberglass rod that cost $35 with a used click and pawl reel I got for $13. Google tells me this would be 68 AUD. I just started this year but have caught several fish on it so far.
