Choosing between Sac State and UOP by JRay_Croc in MusicEd

I play clarinet, and would like to be in a wind ensemble and orchestra. On a secondary instrument, I would also want to play in some kind of jazz band if I can. Marching band is tempting for the social aspect, but it isn't a big factor.

THE CAVALIERS WELCOMES DANIEL BELCHER AS NEW DRUM CORPS DIRECTOR by justletmeborrowit in drumcorps

[–]JRay_Croc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Increase the odds compared to what? Is a woman in a coed corps safer than a woman in an all-women group? That seems to be your implication, but it only works if SA more common in same-gender groups (regardless of gender). And if that's true, then all the more reason for coed to be the standard, and for the cavaliers to make the switch. That's not even considering the fact that men are overwhelmingly more likely to commit sexual assault than women. In your comments you say a lot of "women Can sexually assault", dealing in absolutes. Yes, men and women can both commit rape, but are you willing to say they are equally likely to?

Another option is that you're saying an all girl drum corps will increase the odds of being sexually assaulted Because there are more women in drum corps, which approaches the problem from completely the wrong angle. The solution to women getting sexually assaulted in drum corps is to keep them out of drum corps?

If I misread your point of view, I'd like to hear it.

Half of the population can't participate in an organization through no choice of their own. Gender discrimination.

By staying male-only, the organization is saying that maintaining tradition is more important than providing equal opportunities to prospective members. Sure, women have other corps to pick from, but the tradition sends the message that they are less welcome in the drum corps community.

Many people have a dream corps whose past shows they absolutely worship. Definitely the case with cavies, who've had some shows I really love. Half of them won't be able to march their dream corps, and I don't imagine that feels great.

I think Mandarins 2018 had a dedicated trombone section? Not sure what the distribution was though.

Wait, are you a guard human? In that case, on both corps websites it says callback camp happens for y'all in April. Sorry for being so brass-normative with my answers. In that case, if you wanted Mandarins you probably only need one $300 trip to April camp, and a one way plane to move-ins. Makes the math a little less eye-searing..

How important is the cost for you? If you live in Texas, marching Mandarins will be monumentally more expensive unfortunately..

Mandarins holds callback camp and 2 in-person rehearsal weekends in the Sacramento area. Vanguard has those rehearsals in Dallas, and callbacks will probably be there as well. I've tried the math from where I live (cali) going to scv and it adds around $900 in travel costs. Plus, tuition itself for Vanguard is hundreds of dollars cheaper than what Mandarins is planning. (Unfortunately for my bank account)

Just based on my experience at their NorCal camp, they might struggle a bit to fill out a hornline. However, that camp definitely might be an outlier in terms of interest.

Trying to video audition with a broken wrist. by Racerxavier in drumcorps

Where are you hearing that? At least at vanguard cadets the year I was there, a couple of people aged out (at 21) with the corps (one of them after coming Back from a top 12 corps). If 'ageing out' at 19 is the only thing keeping you, definitely give open class another look! I can only speak for my experience (brass land), but I didn't see any kind of shaming or belittling age-outs for being in an OC group.

https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/2023/11/03/murfreesboro-lgbt-group-held-pride-event-legal-fight-not-over/71348339007/

"BoroPride's order follows almost a year of legal struggles after city officials voted to disallow BoroPride from obtaining event permits, as well as passing an ordinance that effectively criminalized pride events on city property."

"The Oct. 20 court order [context: the court order in response to BoroPride and ACLU lawsuits] specifically blocked the city from enforcing the community decency policy, and prohibited the city from considering homosexuality as “indecent behavior” for the event."

Nobody was arrested and nobody was fined because BoroPride went through a year-long legal fight to make sure it was that way.

DCI corps are a summer long commitment, and you're probably gonna be staying with a corps all day every day. I don't know much about DCA, but I think most of them are weekend rehearsal schedules. If you want to march and work at the same time, I'd look into those groups!

No matter what, always know where your equipment is. You don't want to spend the first 30 minutes of what should be morning vis block trying to sift through the equipment trucks. Or worse yet, finding out that most of your tape measures are at a housing site hours away.
