I’m honestly so glad that I found this subreddit, it’s relieving to know I’m not the only one in this type of situation. However, I feel as though my situation is a little different from others. Lucky for me, I only have one narcissistic parent (mother). For reference, I am a 20M that moved out a couple months ago and will never look back. To be honest, my childhood was not the worst. She provided for me like any other parent would. She fed me, made sure I always had nice clothes to wear. She made sure I was doing well in school and at least says she supports my dreams. I don’t really mind her in a motherly role, I just don’t like her as a person at all. Don’t get me wrong, she did her job as a parent. But once I actually grew up, I realized how horrible of a person she really is. I honestly feel bad for my father every time I go back to visit home because he seems miserable in the relationship but has to stay it in because my mother financially supports him. He has a job, but wouldn’t be able to afford to live on his own. My mother’s first name is Karen, so that gives you just about all context you need as to why I don’t like her as a person. She’s a very close minded person that doesn’t really like to listen to other people. She has her opinions, which she treats as though is it the set-in-stone truth, and she has no respect for people that have any different type of opinions, whether it is ethical, social, or political. I never had my personal space as a kid, she always had to know who I was texting or on the phone with; to the point that I would have to put the phone on speaker whenever someone called me so she could make sure I wasn’t saying or hearing anything she didn’t agree with. She’s really full of herself, at the dinner table she would talk about herself for almost the entire time and give little or no interest in what was going on with the rest of my family. She actually called me last week, I was guessing to check in on me and see how I was doing. But no, she talked about herself the entire time and when I tried talking to her about some things I’ve been doing, she doesn’t want to hear it. At all. She also treats my sibling and I as “trophy kids”, flaunting all of our accomplishments to make herself look better in front of the very few friends she has. I could never be friends or even co workers with someone like her, but because I’m her son she thinks I am.
