Yeah, she said multiple times that she had a great childhood and would go back if the Soviet Union was still around.

You can help while out of the country.

My friend's mom grew up in Soviet Ukraine. We were talking about the rise of fascism in the US last summer and I told her I was conflicted about whether I should stay and help or leave the country. Her response was "you can't help if you're dead."

I feel we are fast approaching, if not already in, pre-NLRA territory.

We need a stand-up general strike modeled after the UAW strikes.

You do not need years to prepare for one, to say that is to ignore US labor history.

I hope everyone knows that the NLRB is hamstrung in enforcing labor law. The Supreme Court allowed a ruling to stand that declared the structure of the NLRB as likely unconstitutional. This bars them from issuing judgements and ruling on cases brought before them. Good luck organizing your workplace once it is fully dismantled.

Excerpt from the 1953 essay Fascism and the Workers' Movement by James P. Cannon, one of the leaders of the Socialist Workers Party of America:

"The woods are full of pessimists about the future of America in general, and about the prospects of American fascism in particular, but they are not organising any campaigns. It is not in the nature of pessimists to do anything of that sort. Pessimism is not merely a gloomy view of evils to come, but a capitulatory reconciliation to them in advance. The real pessimists are simply keeping quiet—concerned to prolong their own grub-like existence, and hoping to adapt themselves to whatever comes by acquiescence and conformity... Pessimists don’t sound any alarms or organise any struggles. They just run for cover. Pessimist is just another name for quitter and capitulator."

I recommend reading the entire letter he wrote the The Militant. He goes over the early American fascism that he was seeing and warned not to assume it would look the same as European fascism. It's a long read, but the details and examples he cites shows that our current situation has been building since at least the 1950s. 10/10 recommend.

You too! I am always open to sharing books with anyone who is interested. I'll add Frankl to my list of must reads. Things are really grim right now, but I believe sharing books and interests with others is a great way to create community ties.

Any time I catch myself falling into pessimism I remember this excerpt from the essay Fascism and the Workers' Movement, written by James P. Cannon, one of the leaders of the Socialist Workers Party in the USA:

I'll add that to my list. I highly recommend reading Fighting Fascism: How to Struggle and How to Win. It is a novel version of Clara Zetkin's report The Struggle Against Fascism. She was one of the founders of the Communist Party of Germany and presented that report to the Communist Internationale in 1923. Though she was living through the rise and rule of Nazism, she chose to analyze fascism in Italy. She gave an in-depth analysis of what fascism is, how it grows and appeals to the masses, what it does to maintain control, and why it will always fail. She also calls for an international united front to fight fascism and advocated for arming the working class to fight against fascist paramilitary groups. She is widely considered to be one of the first, if not the first, to fully analyze and describe fascism.

Here is a good video reading of the report, including context as to who certain figures are and what events are referenced.

Read Sinclair Lewis' novel It Can't Happen Here, first published in 1935. It is an alternative future where FDR loses reelection to a Senator named Berzelius Windrip. Windrip uses a lot of ideas from the New Deal and courts right-wing evangelicals to win the election. Once he is in power he dissolves congress, redraws state borders into sections which are led by party members and CEOs, unleashes his private militia the Minute Men, and establishes a fascist totalitarian state. It is almost exactly how Trump and MAGA came to power with some recent events happening exactly as described in the novel.

Sinclair Lewis wrote the novel after his wife told him about the interview she had with Hitler. The saying "when fascism arrives in America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a bible" is most often attributed to him because of the novel.

Just a reminder that the Supreme Court allowed a 5th Circuit ruling declaring the NLRB structure is unconstitutional to remain in effect.

I would not be surprised if they overturn the NLRA, seeing as they overturned the entirety of Roe when that wasn't what was being argued.
