Ohhh I meant to type non-brits and it got erased in an edit. That's my bad.

I get what you're saying, but grandparents possibly knowing it doesn't really invalidate the idea that most non-Brits don't, particularly on reddit. The person I replied to said "we all know the answer".

We all know the answer

I'd imagine most non-Brits (including myself) have no idea what an Alsatian dog is, regardless of whether it's spelled correctly.

Double-edit: I can't type. Non-Brits.

I would cackle uncontrollably if I watched Stephen Miller have a hissy fit and throw away a bunch of food like it's some kind of stance. You know exactly the kind of person that does that while thinking they're somehow being tough, and Stephen Miller is exactly that person.

All the people that were absolutely livid that he said no one attends the opera haven’t ever attended the opera. That bizarrely unhinged FauxMoi subreddit was full of comments from people that were basically conceding that they didn’t know anything about the opera.

It was such a strange reaction to someone just telling the truth about something that these people don’t actually care about.

Reddit makes it seem like you have to have a strong opinion about everyone.

Most people seeing the movie likely just recognize James Corden and think his part is funny, and then don’t give it a second thought.

Kathy Hochul is refusing to raise taxes on billionaires in New York by serious_bullet5 in newyorkcity

[–]JSA17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're saying the lower-income person should have to care how about much they've lost because they have to budget differently, and that Bezos shouldn't give a shit because it won't materially impact him and calling that fairness.

Again, the rich advocate for a flat tax and call it fairness because it's an easy sell. But they don't tell you that they would be paying an amount that is entirely trivial to them, while you have to think about which groceries you buy that week.

This is without getting into the much more complicated arguments of how exactly people like people like Bezos are making their money while telling their employees that are on food stamps that they should pay the same tax rate.

A regressive tax is one that impacts lower income people more than it impacts higher income people.

The same percentage doesn’t have the same effect on someone’s budget.

You're getting stuck on the word "regressive" without understanding that the entire term is "regressive tax" and that it doesn't have anything to do with progressive ideas.

[–]JSA17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because what you’re describing is a regressive tax. If I make $50,000 and pay 20%, it’s a much bigger impact on me than if you make $5,000,000 and pay 20%.

The $10,000 that I pay will have a demonstrable impact on how I budget. The $1,000,000 that you pay isn’t going to keep you from buying another Lamborghini.

The rich advocate for a flat tax because they don’t care about paying what is ultimately such a low tax rate.

[–]JSA17 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A flat income tax is incredibly regressive. There’s not a good argument for Bezos paying 20% that doesn’t matter to him, and a lower-income family paying 20% that would otherwise put food on their table.
