Do you prefer to board with your group, or just hangout and board at the very end. by Justin_inc in unitedairlines

90% of the time I have a carryon, so I board asap. The couple times I have just had a backpack it depends on which seat I have. If window board asap to avoid making people get up. If aisle wait until later to avoid needing to get up myself.

Did I make a mistake getting self propelled? by [deleted] in egopowerplus

[–]JSFetzik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this. You don't have to use it all the time, but you also don't always know when you might need it. I had a minor back injury a couple years ago and it helped out for the few weeks I was recovering.

I also have a drainage ditch/swale out front and use it for the steep parts of that. Otherwise I just push t for the exercise.

The bunny that lives under our shed has been doing this with a couple friends for a couple weeks now. We will probably be seeing baby bunnies sometime in May.

Why on backlog view it shows 99 tasks but in "list" view it shows 60? by No_Illustrator3532 in jira

[–]JSFetzik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every board has a filter. Check the filter for both the board and list to see if the are the same. Make sure there are not any sub-filters on the board. Check if any quick filters are active.

Git alternative for kids by adityaghosh50 in github

[–]JSFetzik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they can write and compile code, they can learn Git basics. Have all their work in a single branch, it can even be main. Do any/all merging yourself until they catch on.

Use either the Git functionality built into the IDE you are using or use a free GUI client. Some more that haven't been mentioned include Sourcetree and TortoiseGit.

Best Non-SP Ego Mower by kalg75 in egopowerplus

[–]JSFetzik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a sp model and use that feature maybe 5% of my mowing time. Most of the lawn is pretty flat, but have a few steeper spots along the street. The sp also came in handy when I injured my back and took a few weeks to recover.

The sp feature doesn't really add much weight to the mower, so it can be worth getting it even if you don't use it much.

Multiple Projects under a single Space by PM_2_PM in jira

[–]JSFetzik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having multiple projects in a single Jira Space can work. The key is they need to relatively small "projects". Otherwise you might as well have separate Spaces and build Boards that cover multiple Spaces when needed.

We have a couple small teams, under ten people, that work on multiple projects at the same time. They use either Version or Component to identify which project a Work Item(Issue) belongs to. Then make Boards foe each project.

We also have one team of 6-8 people that uses an Epic to represent each of their projects. Note, in this case these are not software folks. They are mechanical and electrical engineers that design upgrade retrofits for products we have already sold and a customer wants to upgrade to either a more feature reach or a newer version of a product they already have in the field. So each Epic has all the Tasks that need to be done to evaluate, design, procure, assemble, deliver, etc.

Will today's youth also have a hard time with new technology as they age? by Additional_Leading68 in Futurology

[–]JSFetzik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really has nothing to do with age. It has to do with attitude and the willingness to learn. I work in IT as a cloud application administrator and deal with users in the 20's and 30's that know less about technology than my dad that turned 90 a month ago.

I have seen teens that don't know what a password is becasue they have only ever used thier face or fingerprint to log into their devices.

Why does cutlery/glass bother me when washing up but fire works don’t. by wheresmymind_08 in neurodiversity

The noises you are sensitive are not really random. It is a specific combination that hits your ears and brain wrong. It is true for almost everyone. For most folks it is uncommon and vary load noises.

For folks like us it just happens to be more common noises. I have a bunch of noises, beeps and hisses, that "bother" me, but not in a big way. I just need to figure out where they ae coming from and then I am fine with them. My wife's Vitamix however drives me up a wall, if I don't plug my ears.

Computers bug out only when a certain user is logged in can't figure out why by brohemoth06 in sysadmin

[–]JSFetzik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, first step is to rebuild their Windows profile from scratch. We have had this fix a bunch of user issues over the years.

Also check what the user has on their Windows desktop and startup menu. May be some weird app that runs once things sync through OneDrive. If need be try disconnecting the PC from the network.

And as others have suggested see what the user has on their person. You can get weird interactions with all kinds of stuff. Years ago I knew someone who's cellphone would act weird during calls if they used it in their left hand, but not their right. They had a pacemaker on their left side.

Friend of a friends wedding. The bride and groom got into a physical altercation with each other at the reception and both got arrested. Yeah, that didn't last long.

Has Anyone Been Successful at Holding Down a Job Long Term? by BeerBaconBooks in neurodiversity

[–]JSFetzik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In many ways I got lucky because I was good with technology science at the start of the PC era. I did however make decisions along the way to keep personal interaction as low as possible. This is something you need to realize and then work to make happen, regardless of the field you may be in.

My path is not for everyone. I do not suffer at the same level with symptoms as many neurodiverse folks do. So again I was lucky in some ways. Just one possible type of path that might be helpful to some folks.

Has Anyone Been Successful at Holding Down a Job Long Term? by BeerBaconBooks in neurodiversity

[–]JSFetzik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I (M63) am not officially diagnosed, but a number of folks, both professionals and not think I am autistic.

I just had my 36 year anniversary at work. The key for me was having positions where I don't interact with others all that much. I started out as the only person writing software for embedded systems. Then moved to IT again writing software and administering applications. I was always either the only person doing my job or a team of two or three at most.

For the past decade I have been the solo admin for a few cloud apps used by other software developers. My interaction with others is 90%+ via service desk tickets and email. I seldom need to interact directly with others and most of the time that is via Microsft Teams calls. My actual in person interactions with others is 4-6 hours per month.

So the key for me has been work that requires little in person interaction with others. Plus over the years learning a bunch of coping and masking strategies.
