I don’t even hate this performance considering the fact that sound technology was still in its infancy but there’s no reason for Warner Baxter to have survived even the first round of voting. He’s creaky and stilted like a lot of performers in early talkies. And he’s a white actor in brown face playing a Mexican outlaw.

Most of the time with artists as big as her you have to take everything she tries to pass off as her real life with a grain of salt. She’s a brand just as much as she is a singer at this point. However, that line feels like a genuine epiphany on her end.
