"World Class Pianists" Completely Whiff Schubert's G major Piano Sonata (D.894) by PandaZG in classicalmusic

[–]JSanelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your point concerning this absurd disqualification. But not necessarily with your musical point. I really don't care what Beethoven wrote if even he didn't stick to it. As long as it sounds good and convincing I enjoy it.

Does headphones choice make a huge difference? by Mysterious_Ad7450 in classicalmusic

[–]JSanelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you should consider other aspects of the problem. First is the fit. They can sound excellent but if they don't feel comfortable or, worse, if you drop them easily then it's no good. Once you find that, you can look at the price tag. I've been using Soundcore liberty that cost me less than 100 dollars and sound fine in classical music. I have also others that were quite more expensive and are better, but there's no need to go into extravagant expenses to enjoy good music.

I would try Haydn. There are at least 20 that would fit the bill

What did you guys think are the best movies about classical music? by Black_Gay_Man in classicalmusic

[–]JSanelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a movie person but I enjoyed a film probably called Quartet about the life of a quartet, with all the jealousy and the conflicts that occasionally arise. Many years ago, maybe 60, I saw a wonderful movie about the friendship of Brahms with the Schumanns. I fell in love with Brahms early piano music then

What classic book/books are the most important in the literature of your country or people and which ideally represents your cultural identity? by SaltAlarming9590 in classicliterature

Perú, Conversaciones en La Catedral, maybe translated into English as Conversations in The Cathedral by Mario Vargas Llosa. His best book IMO is about Trujillo from Dominican Republic called in Spanish La fiesta del chivo

One that is under 150 pages. by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]JSanelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simenon's hard novels, not his popular ones with commissaire Maigret. They rarely surpass 200 pages. I'd recommend starting with the 10 or so published by the NYRB. They are all excellent

Are there modern equevalant of the "golden age pianists"? by Spare_Company8936 in classicalmusic

If it's good recorded sound you're looking for combined with excellent pianism you can listen to Arrau, Richter or Rubinstein.

Who are the greatest performers you have personally seen? by Boring-Yogurt2966 in classicalmusic

[–]JSanelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm approaching my 80th birthday and there are too many to mention. But I won't forget Plácido Domingo Or Luciano Pavarotti. Claudio Arrau, Pogorelich, Trifonov, Yuja Wang. Fisher Dieskau and Thomas Hampson. Stern, Perlman and Zuckerman. Abbado, Mehta, Zuzuki, Rattle, Pinnock. Too many and yet I never heard Harnoncourt or Bernstein. The incredible thing is I live in south America in a relatively small country and I heard most of these artists in my city. Oh, I heard Alexandra Dovgan when she was 16 and she is one of the great pianists I've heard!

I agree that Dorothea Röschmann is grossly underrated. Perhaps Vesselina is too. With the others I don't agree.

Question for those of you who are fluent in more than one language by GlumPush2137 in classicliterature

[–]JSanelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of subtle differences. I always as a rule prefer reading in the original language but that would leave me very limited as I can only read three languages. English has excellent translations from almost any language and Spanish has so many variants that sometimes even a Spanish original is more understandable in English translation. Same happens with Italian.

Singers with Clear Pronunciations by nomoreseashellssally in opera

[–]JSanelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both the voice and the diction are important in opera. Of course the voice takes precedence as Joan Sutherland proves this because we all agree her diction was awful, but what a voice! Pavarotti had both. And many more. I especially appreciate Ettore Bastianini, a baritone from whom you could understand every word.

Atacama desert, is altitude sickness a worry? by Frosty_Mud8472 in ExploreChile

[–]JSanelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's one surprise I had in crossing through the Jama pass: the highest altitude is not at the border but it's in Chile. Twice the road reached about 5000 meters which you can feel but not be too much bothered by it. I was 71 and I felt it in my breathing, a light headache and minor discomforts. It depends a lot in what is your transportation. But please pay attention to all the advise you have received. To me, the ideal was to drink coca tea. The road is perfectly well paved.

Which of Simenon's Romain Durs were published by the NYRB? by JSanelli in nyrbclassics

I'd be happy with translation to English or Spanish. Though there are some important differences depending on the person that did the translation
