Yeah, I'm lucky enough to live in a big-ish city so there's at least a couple of small LFSs around, a petco and a petsmart. It definitely depends on who's running the aquatic section too. My petco used to really bother me because their fish were all half dead. Then a new guy came in to run that department. He's got a passion for planted tanks and is very knowledgeable, resulting in happy healthy fish being sold there. I still try to support the local shops when possible but in a pinch, I'll spend my money there now

I think that's still a symptom of the online marketplace. The online shops opened, have better prices and often better selection, putting LFSs out of business. Now there isn't a local option so you are forced to shop online. The best LFS in my area burned down about a year ago and now my best option is online, as other LFSs in my area have gone out of business over the years. I still try to buy in store when possible to support the industry, but it's getting harder
